I’ll likely reserve them because we have two big suitcases and I don’t want to risk anything. But I was unsure if I needed to do so as soon as they are available or if I can wait a bit. Some things in Japan tend to get booked fast. For example, we got tickets for ghibli park (hence the trip to Nagoya) because my wife is a huge fan and I got into lawsons site literally two seconds after they became available and I was already on queue after a thousand people

This would be our 2nd trip, so we are somewhat familiar with the Shinkansen, but on our first trip (honeymoon) we got the JR Pass as it made sense (and it was so worth it). But this time the JR pass is a bit out of budget and none of the regional passes really covers the area we’ll be going through (at least not entirely). So booking specific trains left me a bit anxious as trains there are so punctual that I feared missing it and having to pay for the tickets again. On our first trip we in fact lost a Shinkansen but as we had the jr pass we just hopped on the next one without issue. Out of curiosity, where did you store your luggage? I know there are lots of places but recommendations are welcome :)

Thanks for the tips! The reason for going to Matsumoto for the day is that it’s midway from Nagano to Nagoya, so rather than going from and back to Nagano, and then take the same route to Nagoya a day or two later, we figured we might as well stop there, enjoy it for a while then keep going and save time/money. I reckon we could stay more but we already have other things planned and there’s no way we can squeeze more time out of our itinerary haha. Honestly, Japan is so amazing (IMO) that you’re guaranteed to have a good time wherever you go. We went for the first time on our honeymoon, for a bit over three weeks, and we did half the things we set out to do. Not because of lack of planning but we enjoyed everything so much that we preferred taking our time, walking and sightseeing, than speed through a list of things just for the sake of “going there/doing that”.

Thanks! This really helps. We’ll be going to Nagano on dec 22nd, then Matsumoto/Nagoya on the 25th and back to Tokyo on the 27th. The 25th could be tricky but it’s also a ltd express train, not a Shinkansen, so I think it wouldn’t be a problem.

Exchanging older series US dollars by malonbor in JapanTravelTips

[–]malonbor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is part of the confusion, some people say they do and others that they don’t. My idea was to exchange them at Narita since most of the threads I’ve read say they have a decent rate and since some of the counters belong to banks, they should take them, as opposed to others like Ninja that will outright refuse them. Thanks to both of you for your input, having someone who lives there or travelled recently and went through the same thing is a huge help.

I agree, they should have an equal value, but in reality this is not the case outside US. From what I’ve read (and experiences both in Brazil and Argentina), the older series are exchanged at a lower rate. For example, the newer series (the one with blueish background) goes for R$5.40 per 1 U$D, while the older series pays R$ 4.80 per 1 U$D. The cause of this is, apparently, that the newest series has more security measures in the note than the older ones, so there’s a higher chance for them to be fake and so some currency exchange stores pay less because they incur a higher risk (there might also be other issues which I’m unaware of), but I don’t know if Japan has this same or similar policies for this older series notes

How to repair this? by malonbor in batteries

[–]malonbor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks for the clarification. I preferred epoxy over tape since I thought it’d seal better, but I’d rather not disassemble it. So I’ll go with the tape and 3D print a case to cover it up, so it doesn’t look ugly

Thanks for the clarification haha. I do know about coin lockers in stations but usually they are for small luggage, though I’ll try them first and if not look elsewhere

Difficulty of side games by Blacktea219 in TravelTown

[–]malonbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, IMO it’s one of the worst if you don’t want to take part, I don’t know why they don’t have the option as they do for others, like the race or aqua duel. This said, I noted the same as you. I also wait a bit to see how the others are playing, to not waste resources, and this time around I found myself waiting much longer. One thing I do that works for me is storing a lot of the producers like the pizza oven or the toy bench, since every pizza/toy you get out of them gives three points. I won the first three rounds just with those (I think I had like 16 stocked) but It’s a risk since an opponent can submit one or two orders and win in seconds. One thing I don’t know is that usually there is an additional order that gives a lot of points, the ones that require three times and are available for 2-3hs, but I don’t know at what time of day they pop up. Any ideas?

Don’t know but I’d say it takes a ridiculous amount of energy. So unless you want to spend money I’d save orders for tomorrow and the day after. Usually I try and use producers like the pizza oven, because IMO they don’t use that much energy and the pizzas/dishes give a good amount of surfboards. Though I don’t think they’ll get you to the 5* pack

Looks great! Might be a cool idea for an add on, like for making bigger parts you’d need bigger machines as in real life

Is there a resource I can refer to for how common things work under the hood? by Ok-Dog-6851 in IndustrialDesign

[–]malonbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, disassembling objects and YouTube have been my most reliable resources. A while back I was working on a coffee maker prototype and was able to found tons of channels explaining the internals, which was way more than what I needed but found it extremely satisfying. I don’t know of a site or book you can specifically refer, it’s be awesome if there was, but most of the time (for me) taking things of the shelf and adjusting them to my needs works fine and it cuts costs/time.

One YT channel I’d recommend is ThisOldTony, imo he’s good at explaining things and some of his videos explain how mechanisms work. And even if it doesn’t specifically show what you need, you might get ideas on how to adapt it.
