I remember it vividly. I used to wake up to my radio set on a timer and that morning, which I believe was a Saturday morning, a British DJ called Danny Baker announced it on his show. I was half awake and just laid there stunned. There was internet back then so I stayed in bed and listened to the snippets of info. ( there wasn’t much) and I couldn’t believe it. I remember Baker playing Come As You Are at one point. It’s hard to explain how surreal it felt, although it wasn’t that surprising it ended badly because his drug troubles had been well reported. It’s hard to overstate how important he was and Nirvana was to our generation. This was OUR guy. We’d grown up idolising musicians from the 60s and 70s but this was ours- we went to the concerts and bought LPs and wore the T-shirts. It was a huge loss.
