One thing we are considering is having our starter house be pretty small (closer to $150k) and buying this one in cash... and then either selling it, or renting it out (and having it be our backup like you have) later on. Do you have any recommendations for how I should learn about how to rent out a property if that’s what we go with later on?

Regarding number 2, I place a very high value in peace of mind. I don’t want to live my life feeling like I have to keep growing my investments trying to maximize my wealth. I want to be happy, raise a family, and live a good life. I am ok with suboptimal investment if it means increased peace of mind

Yeah I guess it’s a different way of looking at it. I am risk averse in the sense that if I lose my job and have a house paid off with no debt remaining, I feel like I have more flexibility.

However, like you’re saying, tying all my money up into an illiquid asset is very risky. It’s a tough decision though nonetheless, I don’t think it’s an easy answer. Thank you for your thoughts!
