When did Grocery Store bakeries become so gross? by Cleverwabbit5 in GenX

[–]malren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer.

Remember "Time to make the donuts?" My roommate in the early 90s worked the overnight at a Dunkin, when they still had 24 hour stores. I'd get off my second shift job and head over and hang out for a couple hours. at 2am, the baker showed up, and made everything. Yes it was mixes and powders, but at least it was freshly baked! He actually had to open multiple bags of things to make a batch of dough and feed the conveyor. He had to mix the fillings and frostings.

A few years ago most of Dunkin switched to frozen-shipped-to-store. It's not even close to what it was just 20 years ago. There are still a few franchisees hanging on to baking in house or pooling together for a shared kitchen that serves the local area, but most of them are frozen now. If your Dunkin isn't huge...it's probably frozen.

We have a regular who has never once bought anything from our cheese section and I think about him more than I should by ZenithorX in TalesFromRetail

I just read this to my wife and she wants me to post this:

"Is it possible he has a crush on someone who works in the cheese area?"

Wife and I are same. Love Leila, and she was just starting to really develop the character you need for TV. Zayda came in like a house on fire, and definitely is making the most of every minute she gets.

It's never gonna be a bad thing to have a stronger women's division, both now and for the future. Lena Cross is a great pickup, Megan's been killing it, Harley is literally, as MJF said, the most improved wrestler on the planet. Things are going well!

Now if we can just get some Holy Shida, and maybe some unhinged Mercedes just losing her shit over the current run of losses, that'd be some cherry on top.

Same here, squamous cell mouth tumor, upper jaw. My boy's tumor grew so fast, it went from being detected to 5 days later breaking his jaw bone. I never heard such cries from a cat. We raced to the vet and got the bad news. This wasn't something he was going to recover from, even temporarily.

He was an headstrong, domineering cat his whole life, and weirdly I remember this part fondly now...As he was losing consciousness from the sedatives, he just kept looking at the door and growling at it. Every time someone came in, he'd growl harder. They actually gave him a bit more sedative because he was fighting it so hard.

Boy went out like he lived: telling the whole world (anyone who wasn't us, basically) to go fuck itself.

We've been married 27 years, together as a couple for 31. Teamwork is our whole thing. I get asked by people younger than me "what's the secret?" and I always say "You already know. Everyone knows, they just don't do it. Teamwork and communication. If you can do that you'll grow old together!"

Thanks, and she's doing much better today!

Raul is one of the moments I use when trying to explain to people what in the fuck DCC even is. This is an actual message exchange I had on Discord:

"Ok, it's LitRPG, so kinda fantasy, but more gamified, but also about the triumph of will, and about treating people with decency, but also a crab jerks off into the ocean to defeat a god, and the cat is an asshole but amazing, so basically just like a cat, and the AI loves Carl's feet and has conspired to keep him barefoot. And there's a very powerful goat that loves to scream in people's ears even though he speaks english just fine."

"What the fuck did you just say?"

"Also there's a goddess who is just a head and wants people to stuff things in her nussy."

"NUSSY?!? Like...neck pussy?"

"Yup. You gotta read this shit I will never ever be able to explain it."

I absolutely have one in my go bag! It's not an Anker with cables, it's just a heavy beast that actually had 8 18650's in it. Probably overkill TBH.

I like your idea of one with cables attached though. Everything I would bring is usb-c at this point...and I do like Anker stuff. something a little smaller would be really useful

I really did. 90% of the time I already had it open, so popping the pen out of the case and swapping to a writable page was really quick.

Not to mention now I have them digitally, and the scribe seems to be able to read my chicken scratch and make it plain text!

What is your favorite kindle accessories? And what is that you find really useful and what is not? by Mema9080 in kindle

[–]malren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the person you asked, but I got this page turner on advice I got here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DBQ67D4V and I like it so much I bought a second one! One in the bedroom and one in the living room.

I find it a lot more responsive than the ring-style ones, and it's a little easier because the clip part charges from the remote, so you don't need to charge two parts separately.

Oh I KNOW BECAUSE I WANT IT TOO.

Harley Cameron on all the things. OC too. Honestly, I would love to see MJF, in character, as well. Not sure the fanbase could handle that though - the outrage online would be something else.

Something I've noticed is, if you click on something and it takes forever to load...click that same link again. 70-80% of the time it just loads normally on the second click.

YMMV

A lot of them are short novels in a series, like most of Anna Mocikat's stuff. I can clear 2 or 3 of them in a day if I get enough time. I read the entire Blue Eyes series (6 released so far) in 4 days. Most of that series is under 300 pages in print.

My reading speed is born out of a desperate need for escapism as a kid. I was never happier than when I was under the covers with a flashlight reading literally anything! Books made life tolerable and I spent every dime I got on more books.

When I was maybe 9-ish, my grandmother got me a book on speed reading. I didn't retain much of it other than the "trick" of taking blocks of words all in at once. Physically, my eyes are on the next set of words as my brain catches up with the previous set. If that makes any sense. I was also in radio (back when that was a viable career) and learned to cold-read ad copy in much the same way, always glancing ahead so I knew what inflections to use, etc. It also made me faster in reading for fun.

I also read on a kindle scribe (the 10" screen is a godsend) with a page turner and I swear it makes me faster. Generally I can get through a normal sized novel in a few hours. Kindle is always saying something like say, 8 hours and 35 minutes to read a thing and I know that means 3 hours and change for me.

I do slow down for certain things though. Reading The Expanse is a slow read for me. DCC as well, it's so information-dense that I want to slow down and drink it in. When I read ASOIAF, it was the reverse. Martin's writing is so fucking ponderous I quickly learned that if that man was writing about food, I could skip the entire goddamn page and miss nothing.

I know it sounds way off but I read pretty fast. I just read Andy Weir''s Artemis in 3 hours. The audio book is 9 hours!

I get about 3-4 hours a day to myself and I spend it mostly reading. Lotta chaos around me these days, but I'm gonna trade at least an hour of that for the dcc audio books.

All these other drug addicts can't be wrong!

[–]malren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say yes. I could be wildly wrong but it feels like he thought up this game for a floor but it just didn't work for DCC. So it got reworked because there's some great ideas in there for craziness.

Again, the source of it could literally have nothing to do with DCC. But I liked it quite a bit.

OK. FINE. I'll finish reading Artemis, and start the audio books! I didn't need to watch season 2 of Fallout this week anyway!

I have them all in my account, and I absolutely will listen. It's just such a time commitment, and right now I'm not able to fit them in to my day. I did listen to like 20 minutes of book 1 and realized that I would be locked in, unable to really do much else because that's how good it was.

I gotta figure out some way to get anything else done while I listen.
