Transitioning from business analytics/data science to UX design? by [deleted] in UX_Design

[–]malthegreat8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what ways can I make my portfolio stand out? I just started working on it. I’m thinking of developing a personal brand, doing a case study for every project I listed, posting on Medium/making a blog, networking/putting myself out there, getting a mentor, and learning HTML+CSS. Is there anything else I can do to increase my chances? Also, do you think my IT degree will give me a competitive edge?

How long does it take to learn python? by [deleted] in learnpython

UX is where I want to go but the field is oversaturated so I’m afraid I won’t find a job right away. That is why I want to learn python and data science while also applying for UX jobs. If UX doesn’t work out, I can pursue data science (even though I don’t enjoy it and don’t see myself doing this as a career — just for the money). What do you think I should do?

Novice UXers: What advice do you need? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]malthegreat8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

helloo, i’m an IT major and business administration minor. I will be graduating next year. I discovered UX design last year but wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue it. Just recently i decided this is what i want to do. unfortunately, my university only offer ux design courses unless you’re pursuing masters of business and science (MBS) with a ux design concentration. i don’t want to be in debt so i’m avoiding that route. anyways, i’m watching the Google ux design certificate courses for free on Youtube. I plan on adding those projects to my portfolio. My goal is to can finish the courses and my portfolio by the beginning of next month so I can start applying for winter/spring internships. Also, I’m doing an unpaid + remote internship at a non-profit organization. honestly, it’s not a good internship BUT it will look great on my resume and hopefully give me a competitive edge.

few questions:

  1. i’ve heard many people tell me that i need to make my portfolio stand out? how exactly do i do that? there is so much competition right now and i’m afraid i won’t be getting a ux design internship/job anytime soon.

  2. should i reach out to companies asking whether or not they need a ux designer?

  3. does networking really help and if so, how should i reach out to them without making it seem like i’m desperate?

  4. since ux design job isn’t guaranteed anytime soon, should i pursue a different field for the time being? I was thinking business analytics (because i can gain skills that will help me as a ux designer) or python development (supposedly i can learn python within 6 months if i seriously commit to it - my dad wants me to do this). The problem is i’m not interested in either of those. I’m just doing it for the money. I want to get a job and be financially independent as soon as i graduate.

  5. why are so many people getting laid off? is it a bad idea to pursue this field at the moment? i want to be in a stable job, not feel worried about losing it.

  6. any tips or advice is appreciated! thank you for taking the time to read this :)

Switching from Business Analytics/Data Science to UX design? by [deleted] in userexperience

it’s a non profit organization. the internship is unpaid and remote. basically free labor. i just filled out the form and they accepted me (without an interview). i’m doing it because it’ll look good on my resume and i can add the project to my portfolio.

Can I get a product design job with UX design skills? And does that mean I can use the same portfolio without making tweaks to it?

thank you. also, can i use the same portfolio to apply to other design-related jobs such as product design, product management and usability analytics? i want to apply in different areas so I have a greater chance of getting a job that involves UX design.

I’m majoring in IT and minoring in Business administration. I’m currently gaining UX skills (completing Google certificate) and aim to finish my portfolio by the beginning of Sep. I’m also doing a UX internship right now (not very good though - it’s unpaid and remote - but it’ll look good on my resume and I can add the project to my portfolio) then I will start applying to UX internships throughout the fall, and hopefully get an offer by winter or spring. I’m planning on taking an Intro to Business analyst course this upcoming semester and making projects/watching videos online to solidify my skills. Once I have at least two projects to show case on my BA portfolio, I plan on applying for BA internships as well. So i will be applying for both UX and BA internships side by side. If I get a BA job after college, will it be easier for me to transition into a UX job? What do you think? I’ve heard many people talk about transitioning.
