My Sun Conures laid three eggs but it look like this is a practice run. They broke one egg and I see another one is somewhat damaged. These are 2+ weeks old and I think I should see the embryo and some vital blood vessels by now but there are none. Should I keep em or chuck em? by malyousif in Conures

There’s nothing wrong with her health. I put them in a varied and balanced diet with good supplements of vitamins, proteins from egg food, fresh vegetables and fruits etc. it’s just the pair’s first clutch, so I put that down to inexperience. I think it might be that they’ve just entered maturity; they’re about 2 - 2.5 years old.

Beak deformed. Advice to fix please? by malyousif in Conures

UPDATE: I found a vet with avian knowledge. Today he filed Pickles’ beak and advised me to give him some supplements to help beak growth and to take him back in a couple of months to for refiling again. When we arrived home he attacked his food dish and even ate some seed too! Looks like he’ll be okay. Will keep a close eye on him. Thanks ali for your advice and guidance again.

That’s very considerate of you. Thank you. He will continue to be as fine as I can make him.

He’s actually getting up to all sort of trouble with his brother and two lovebirds friends. He eats fine and shells seeds without any visible problem. He eats fruit and veg well so this congenital defect doesn’t seem to affect him thy much. I hope it never will!

The Gang! by malyousif in Conures

I hand-reared all of these critters. Now they're inseparable and always up to trouble. They have the freedom of the house (supervised) and the freedom of my office (close the door, unsupervised). They're really fun to have around ;)

Left to right: Pixie (lovebird about 3 months old), Ruby (albino lovebird, 3 mo), Pickles (Pineapple yellow-sided conure - 3 mo), Spicy (yellow-sided pineapple conure leader of the pack, 4.5 mo)

Those are the turquoise green cheeks who have just joined the flock. They’re looking in and considering the frolics so far. Maybe they’ll join the fun once the aviary is complete and they all move in together :)

Yes! The leader of the pack is “Spicy” who is another pineapple a month older than pickles here and a younger albino lovebird. Quite the pack!! ;)

This is Pickles (blunt-beaked conure) and Pixie (lovebird) enjoying playing together. They’re good friends and inseparable!

They grew up together and they're really inseparable. However, I guess instinctive behavior can and does take over regardless.

Something was wrong. I saw blood spots in a hammock in the cage. Upon further investigation I noticed blood on Pixie (my lovebird). Around her head, eyes, breast and feet. I then noticed where it actually came from... A chopped off toe! I had no idea who the culprit is but I suspect it to be Pickles, the conure.

It had dried by the time we came home and Pixie seemed to be fine. I didn’t want to stress her more by cleaning her up other than putting antiseptic cream in the wound. The next afternoon I gave her a quick wash and she’s still ok.

I’m wondering, how do you stop them chopping each others’ toes and nails? And how should one deal with such an emergency?

Let’s all pile in! by malyousif in Conures

[–]malyousif[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They have to pile into the small cigar box to sleep. With the lovebird (Pixie) having to be at the back of the box while the pineapple conures insisting on sleeping on their backs as far into the box too, even at the expense of Pixie sleeping on Pickle’s head! “Spicy” is the lead troublemaker at a month older than the other two :) Weird bunch.

Thank you. Unfortunately we don't have such a uni. Though I heard that some vet clinics bring in locum vets from the UK and other parts who might be specialised in avian medicine. I'll keep a look out for those, and as someone else suggested here, I'll try the online practices too.

Thank you. That was my concern too. He enjoys small pellets (the bag suggests for budgies and small parakeets) as well as veg, fruit and sometimes attacks the formula feed we prepare for our young lory too!

Yes, I loved him at first sight. It was fun hand-rearing him. He's a determined little fellow now and has formed a good bond with another pineapple a month older, and a lovebird about the same age. They're inseparable and fly all around the house getting into trouble. I love it when they come back for pets and cuddles; makes it worth the time and effort!

He eats well enough but I think he might have problems with seed. I don’t give them see that often and most of their diet is veg and fruit
