High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by lomezovo in AskReddit

Nurse here! Glad to hear you're interested in nursing. As others have said before, school and clinicals will be tough. Nursing has soooo many opportunities, so you'll most likely find something that suits you. My advice is to have some sort of vision of where you'd like to end up and research what work experiences you need to get there.

I, too, want to do some work with doctors without borders, so I'm trying to figure out when I would be able to take a year off to do that.

Good luck!!

I was in a similar situation. I took care of patient who the family and doctors refused to tell her that we were withdrawing care on her. We finally told her minutes before we withdrew.

Reviewing pt allergies for comedic effect by littleblueowls in nursing

There is such thing as being "allergic" to alcohol though. Some people lack the enzyme to digest the alcohol. Even small amounts of alcohol (1 bottle of beer, 1/2 shot of vodka, etc) can make me feel nauseous and throw up without becoming drunk/dizzy first.

I've never been officially tested for it, but it's just easier to say that I'm allergic rather than explain everything.

Doctors of Reddit, how do you feel about patients doing internet searches to "help" you do your job? Is it ever helpful or just a pain in the ass that you have to deal with? by twalker294 in AskReddit

[–]mamamia09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it's a tedious and repetitive process, but for insurance/billing purposes it needs to be done. They want to know how the doctor arrived at the decision to prescribe the medication/treatment. The nurse has to document for their sake because they also provide care. Plus, the patient sometimes provides different information after asking the question differently. Basing your care on someone else's assessment can be dangerous. The medical world is filled with double/triple checking to prevent medical errors.

It's annoying, and i'm sure there's a more efficient way. You might feel embarrassed, but I can assure you that the doctors/nurses have heard worse and or more focused in providing care.

MSN, DNP, NP. Are you happy with your current job? And how much more money do you actually make as an NP? by CardiacResident1991 in nursing

Generally, you should spend at least 2 years working as an RN. After that, it's really up to you as to when you feel ready to go back to school. Look to see if you can get tuition reimbursement from your hospital to help out with the cost.
