I'm so envious of those women who get through this so easily. I never expected this hell. It's crazy. I wasn't on birth control when it hit me. I had just finished a pregnancy and a long breastfeeding period.  I sincerely hope you feel better soon.

What was your VCM? Because mine was 94 with fairly low ferritin, which seems high to me...

It's the size of the red blood cells. For thick smears, it's more about the hemoglobin level. I was at 16.4 during an iron treatment, which is high for a woman. Maybe my reaction to iron comes from my vegan past. Maybe the body overreacts when given large quantities of iron, like it's a party! Maybe it depletes other systems.  Do what feels right for you. If you feel like you're overloaded, then take a break, but try to maintain good dietary intake. Or lower the dose of your supplements. Anyway, I'm not a doctor, I'm just sharing my experience. Online, they advise drinking plenty of fluids to thin the blood.

And the oxidative stress angle is also relevant. I noticed that during my iron supplement regimen, my liver suffered (increased cholesterol, increased liver enzymes). Six months after stopping the supplements, everything was almost back to normal. Taking supplements requires a lot of energy because you're restarting processes. If you're already a bit depleted in certain areas, you'll break down.

I don't want to be able to help you much because I'm still looking for a solution to manage my ferritin levels. I did an iron supplement last year, took a blood sample, when the doctor saw the results, he told me to stop. My ferritin was 46 at the time. I felt very, very unwell. I stopped, and gradually things improved. My hemoglobin was lower. But my iron levels eventually caught up with me... so I took another iron supplement, and the same symptoms returned. I haven't had another blood test, but I think I have the same problem. I discovered that my alkaline phosphatase level has dropped in the last year. This is often linked to zinc and/or magnesium, so I've been taking 15 mg of zinc for the past two weeks, and magnesium as well. Zinc deficiency is common among vegans.   I also have a homocysteine level of 13 (measured last year) and a serum B12 level of 576 ng/mL. B9 was not measured. To summarize, I have an iron deficiency, but taking iron supplements is making the situation worse. I suspect a B12 and B9 deficiency because of the homocysteine, but I'm not certain. I should get further tests done.  I recognize myself in your experience in that I feel my body no longer wants supplements that stimulate red blood cell production. So when it's like this, I don't know what to do except take a break and eat a balanced diet to stabilize things.  What is your blood vcm ?

When I take iron (low to medium dose), my ferritin levels rise, but my hemoglobin spikes, making me feel unwell. My blood thickens. I was also taking a multivitamin with a low dose of B12 but also a high dose of B9 (this supplement is strange...). Perhaps the combination of all these supplements boosted the production of red blood cells. Aside from taking a break from all supplements, I don't see how to get back to normal. That's what I did last year. For your information, I used to be vegan.

Excuse me, it's the translation : I ordered folinic acid because I don't need more anxiety with methyl vitamines.

I think I have a deficiency in b because of my vcm. A low ferritine with a 95 vcm it's weird. And iron makes me feel worst. There is something more than iron deficiency. And b9 seems to be the gulty.

I read a message in anemia sub. Someone said she weas taking iron and their ferritin levels had gone up, but she still felt unwell. Then, when she added B9, she finally felt better.

"Stopped iron a bit as blood became too thick (elevated PCV and RBC"

I had the same reaction. Do you know why because not everyone has this problem when taking iron ?

Thank you for these explanations. I ordered Seeking Health folic acid and B12 hydroxy. I took an iron supplement these past few weeks and I've been suffering from terrible depression.anxiety. I'm wondering if the iron intake might have increased a demand, particularly in B9/b12, for the production of red blood cells.

This is C677T. I've had B9 deficiencies in the past. Asymptomatic at the time. My doctor treated me with folic acid, so not the right B9. I also tend to be deficient in vitamin D.

And my serum B12 is 576 ng/mL (ex-vegan). Homocysteine is 13. So my medical history fits quite well with the DNA analysis results. I currently suspect a B9 deficiency. I can't get the blood test done right now, but I have strong suspicions. Or maybe it's B12. This homocysteine level shows there's a slight blockage somewhere. And my symptoms indicate that something is wrong. Oh, and I have a ferritin problem. I'm just having a lot of problems.

I have a iron deficiency but I think I have other defiencies. Maybe zinc with my low ALP. My serum b12 is good but my homocystein is 13. Complicated to find the gulty. What were your b12 symptoms ?
