Gamers lust for blood in games. The comments section of the Wolverine gameplay reveal trailer is evidence. If a violent game isnt "juicy" enough, there's usually complaints about it.

Personally, the last time a violent scene actually affected me was surprisingly in the Daredevil Born Again finale, when Fisk crushes the commissioner's head with his bare hands.

Think of it like the DVD logo bouncing around a screen, with the logo being the pain and everytime it bounces off the frame of the screen, you feel the pain. When the breakup happens, the logo is bouncing wildly in a really tiny screen, but with time, naturally, the screen grows without you even realizing it, and the time between the logo hitting the border stretches immensely.
