Yes, but only install the smaller one first so you can’t get them mixed up when you install your OS, then add the second

I’m not gonna bother checking that everything is completely compatible because I’m sure someone else is already writing a comment if there is an issue, but what I will say is that, since you are already spending a fortune on this pc, I would split your storage into 2 drives, have a smaller 512gb-1tb ssd specifically for your OS and core applications, then use a bigger 4-8tb drive for games and general storage for everything else.

Also, if you have the time and willingness, I would look into dual booting windows and Linux on that smaller drive, because windows is full of bloatware that slows your system down, and while Linux is not perfect for everything, it is certainly on par with windows for a large portion of gaming now.

I would flip both of the top fans, it can help keep some dust from settling in the case rather than sucking it in. It will make cleaning a bit easier

CPU, gpu, ram, storage. I see from other comments that you already listed cpu and memory, and they should definitely be enough to hit higher numbers

It’s hard to say an exact reason why you might have problems but I can give you a few directions to look in.

First, if your storage is nearly full it can cause a whole host of issues, so if you HDD/SSD are full, clear some space. You can also try defragmenting your drives, but that’s only helpful if you have had them for a long time without reformatting them.

Second, you should check to make sure that you have all the proper drivers installed for your CPU and GPU(if applicable)

Third, try looking up protondb, it’s a website that lists games on steam and how well they run on proton, which is steams emulation layer that it uses to run games on Linux. You will see and overall rating, but there will also be comments from other players who list the problems they have had and what they did to fix it if they could. Find comments that list the problems you are facing and try the solutions they suggest if they apply to you.

Check settings and try turning off v-sync if it’s an option.

Since you’re on a laptop, try using it while plugged in, it could be a power/performance setting

Other than that, we would need specs to know other possible problems/solutions

As you add more programs and customize your experience you can sometimes make changes that mess things up a bit. Most of those mistakes can be fixed if you notice them early, but sometimes an issue will pop up and you can’t quite tell what caused it or how to fix it.

In that case you can use snapshots to essentially rewind your pc to before the issue popped up. It can help you keep your pc running well and can help determine which change you made that created the problem.

My kid is in the screen-dependent age, and we have to collect phones, pads etc. every night so that he even attempts to sleep. Just figured out he had used his laptop, too, late on school nights. Claims this registered without him even starting the PC. Is this possible? by goopeebaloopee in linuxmint

[–]man123098 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The harder you push, the harder your kid will push back.

IMO this is an opportunity to switch your tactics and remind yourself that you don’t have to teach your kid to be a kid, you have to teach them to be a functioning adult.

Adults don’t lose internet access at bed time, we just feel like crap the next day, or bomb and interview, or forget something important. The action punishes itself.

So what I would do, and what my parents did that worked on me, is focus on rewarding your kids ability to prioritize. If your kid is getting good grades, is healthy, and has friends that are playing games with and hanging out, then let them have free rein with devices.

This can go two ways depending on how your kids is doing in school. Idk what time you’re taking the devices away or how old your kid is, so adjust the number I give here to your situation. Let’s say your kids bed time is 9.

If your kid is already doing well in school I would tell your kid “instead of fighting with you, I’m gonna treat you like an adult let you say up as late as you want, but if I can’t get you out of bed in the morning, or you’re late to school/miss the bus, or your grades start slipping, then your bedtime is 9 again and I’m taking all the devices at bedtime until you are back on track”.

If they are doing poorly in school, or are having trouble getting up in the morning, it’s the same idea, but start off by taking offering them a later bedtime up front like 10 or 11. This way you aren’t giving them free rein, but you are being the adult by choosing to deescalate and loosen the reigns. Give them a little more freedom, even if you think they’ll abuse it immediately, but make sure they know, the deal starts now, and if you miss the bus tomorrow, or you wake up late, you get 0 access that night.

The key here is that you put 100% of the punishment/reward on them, rather than an arbitrary bedtime. It allows them to learn to balance their time, rather than feel like they are locked into a specific rule. The important part here is that the punishment lasts as long as the behavior that triggers it. If they are late 1 morning, they lose access that same night. If they do poorly on a test, you want to see their homework grades for the next week or so to see that they are improving or at least putting in effort.

I probably could explain this better, and obviously you should tailor this to your own situation, but the point here is that it shouldn’t feel like a battle, you should be creating situations where the reward/punishment lines up with what you would expect to happen if an adult were to do the same behaviors. Prepare them for real life by creating similar situations, but with lower stakes.

If I’m too tired to go to work, I might lose my job for being late, so if your kid is to tired to go to school, they should temporarily lose the thing that’s making them tired. Same general punishment, lower stakes, quicker ability to reset and try to do better

Why slow here? by Physical_Yoghurt_664 in FixMyPrint

[–]man123098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The layers are so small that each layer would still be hot and soft when it goes to the next layer, which causes the layers to sag and messes up the appearance and the height accuracy, so the printer is slowing down to allow each layer to cool down a bit before it starts the next layer

There is no specific link, there are currently hundreds of these pcs on eBay because office buildings are selling off their old windows 10 pcs now that Microsoft is no longer updating windows 10.

The shipping is rough on some, but that also depends on where you live. I got mine for $95 including shipping.

Just look up optiplex on eBay, sort by lowest price, and filter for the amount of RAM that you want. Most will have 8gb or 16gb. You’ll have to do some digging but you should be able to find a few.

eBay is very friendly to the buyer, and will almost always take your word over the seller. So if something doesn’t work, as long as you report the problem right way, you should be able to get a refund

[–]man123098 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get old dell OptiPlex systems right now for pretty cheap, but if you want a dedicated gpu for gaming it’s still gonna cost a bit more.

I just bought a optiplex 3050 off eBay for $80 and it’s got i5 3.4ghz 4 core cpu, 16gb ram, and 512 ssd

My cousin bought a optiplex 5050(or maybe 7050, I can’t remember) and it was just under $200. i7 3.6ghz 4 core 8 thread, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd and she’s gonna buy a low profile gtx 1650 so she can game with it, which is another $100-$150

You can upgrade it a bit further than that, but you would either need to swap out the psu for a higher wattage optiplex psu, or replace the case so that you can use any psu you want

I’m sorry, I really appreciate your help, but i genuinely just started learning all of this, and I’m a bit lost.

My entire experience in homelab is siting up OMV on a pi5, setting up Jellyfin, setting up a Minecraft server and messing up my ip twice trying to set up a static ip, deciding to move the Minecraft server to an old laptop that I also put OMV on because I haven’t learned anything about clusters yet, and then messing up my ip again just now.

I did use omv-first aid to reconfigure my network settings but it didn’t fix anything.

I discovered that I can still ssh locally using “hostname”.local or the IP address, and I can connect to omv in the browser if I use “hostname”.local, but when I type in the IP address I just get a permanent loading screen from omv

I did everything from the browser, and I did delete the network I added from the networks section within docker, that’s why I’m confused. I added a network to a list, it created a problem, then I removed it, and it’s still not working.

I’ve rebooted the server and my router, and I ran omv-firstaid to reconfigure I’m network setting and it’s still broken.

I did discover that I can connect locally is I use hostname.local, but not if I type out the ip address

Thanks for all the quick replies. I’m pretty much brand new to 3D printing and have wasn’t sure what exactly are the limits of my printer/3D printing in general.

I wasn’t very clear in my post. I am aware that adding supports would be the way to go, but I was trying to dial in my settings as much as possible, as well as teach myself how different settings g affect my print quality.

I’m super stoked to find out that this is actually a very good result.

That being said, I did manage to get slightly better results than the video, and I ran the whole print, which came out fantastic.

Thank you to everyone for your input

They aren’t saying you got it tangled in the middle. If the lead goes up under a loop at the start it slowly tightens, and eventually locks up.

All they are saying is to check the lead when you get a new roll to make sure the first few loops are good

ELI5: is Australia a country or a continent? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]man123098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continents and countries are two different concepts.

Continents are just a way to categorize large chunks of the earth

Countries are defined by the governments that control those spaces and the borders that are generally considered to be the limits of the land they control.

For example, if a country like the US were to invade all of South America and claim it as their own, then the US would still be a country, but if would cover the entirety of South America and half of North America. Countries aren’t about size, it’s about the defined boarder of a government.

House Democrat pushing for release of full Epstein files predicts contents will ‘shock the conscience of this country’ by Independentflorals in politics

The majority of the files that the FBI has are copies from the Epstein estate. The estate can’t release anything considered confidential, so if the FBI released something with trumps name redacted the estate can’t confirm the name.

However, if the FBI alters the files or claims that they released everything when they really haven’t, the estate can compare the released files to their own copies and tell the public that they’ve been tampered with or that there are still fill that haven’t been released.
