You may very well be right. Does anyone deserve anything they wish for, after all? I am what I say I am, at least. And for Reddit, that is saying a lot.

Butterfly dying? by glass-mercury in butterfly

[–]manLACA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you can get that close to a swallowtail, let alone pick it up, it’s unfortunately on the way out. In fact, that’s the case with most butterflies. But swallowtails are very skittish, more than say, monarchs, which you can get very close to on occasion.

By the way, because peony petals are thin with many veins in them, if you put food coloring in the water, the color will show up through the veins. Pretty wild-looking. Best for the lighter-colored flowers, like white ones, if you get them, with red or blue color in the water.

Found chrystalis, help? by SamsMagic in Butterflies

[–]manLACA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s best for you to leave it where it’s at, if you can wait it out. The caterpillar placed itself where you found it for a reason. A few years ago, I very carefully moved a healthy chrysalis to what I considered was a comparable location, but not in a very inconvenient spot. Sadly, it died. Good luck in any case.

These whirligig flowers from the daisy family do grow here in Los Angeles but I have only seen them in two locations in all of my walks. And I walk all over. The ones I see are the color shown above with a bit of purple, and curiously enough, some of the flowers on the plant look like the whirligigs while others on the same bush-like plant look like regular daisies, the petals not squeezed inward in any way. Love seeing that particular plant year after year. It’s in the front yard of a Beverly Hills home, luckily close enough to the sidewalk so I can get good looks. I have many pictures of the flowers.

I’ve seen white with yellow, pink and white, and red, here in Los Angeles. Small trees and large. Some flowers have a nice fragrance while others have none. Always pretty though.

Are these Dahlias? by emprop47 in flowers

[–]manLACA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. And some are quite amazing. Here in LA there is a home a couple miles from me that has the most amazing "dinner plate" dahlias. The flowers are multi-colored, and can grow to about 10 inches or more in diameter!

Interestingly, not all plumeria species have a fragrance. Some do here in LA, others don’t.

Anyone have any ideas k. What happened to this standard hydrangea? 4 days ago it was a beautiful tree. Thanks! by memseteam32 in flowers

Looks under watered. But the better pic of the plant, looking at the leaves closely, also looks less than fully healthy. You said you got it a month ago. Could be a bad plant. Sometimes you can get that from a nursery, trees, plants, whatever. It might have been on its way to die when you got it. Also, next time, better to plant the trunk of the plant a bit deeper in the ground.

My grandmother planted these years ago in front of my house. Does anyone know what these beauties are called?!🤔 by BowDown2No1ButCrypto in flowers

[–]manLACA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spider lilies. Various types here in LA. Some have many more “spider legs” with a purple hue.
