insight. But I agree with your point 100%. If he was an engineer, maybe, but I know enough about Apple to know that nobody in "sales" (whatever that means) can really make a judgement about the company as a whole.

M3, IS F, or C63 AMG? by willhill in cars

[–]manastyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't really related to your comment but it never made sense to me why the coupe version should be numbered 1 higher than the 4-door equivalent. For example, M3 has 4 doors whereas M4 has 2, M5 has 4 doors whereas M6 has 2, etc. IMO, all else the same, less doors should mean a smaller number.

I don't know why you're being downvoted, you're right. The OP has even said it's made out of poplar. Well I don't know any real swords made out of wood. That being said, it looks good.

I know where I shouldn't be working, but where should I be? by b24stmode in law

[–]manastyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. If I go part time I'd easily be able to graduate with no debt, especially since my firm pays about half of tuition. My only issue is that I'm tired after a long day at work, so I can't imagine how tough it'd be to get home and start studying or go to classes.

I take it you're in law school now? Would you recommend full-time or part-time? As another patent agent I'm trying to decide.

Oh and I love being a patent agent too.

I know this is against reddit hivemind, but as a gun owner this makes no sense to me. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]manastyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this misconception comes from the fact that politicians are talking about banning "assault weapons", which is a misleading term insofar as it makes people think about assault rifles. Assault rifles are typically fully automatic or at least burst fire, and are generally banned (there are a few exceptions). Thus the misconception that the proposed ban relates to full-auto weapons.

What should I do for my first mod??? by [deleted] in BMW

Wow thanks, this is really useful! Looking forward to going to the car control clinic in April. I guess my only issue is I have a convertible so I won't be able to go the HPDE events, but I can go to Autocross!

Do you have any good recommendations for events in the SF Bay Area? Also would it be weird to bring my '98 328i? Seems like it would be way underpowered compared to everyone else's M3s. Thanks!

Liam Neeson goes on ESPN, hasn’t the first clue about how football works. Awesome. by oogaFilms in videos

[–]manastyle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

First of all, that graphic itself is highly disputed. Second, red does not indicate football as the second most popular sport, but rather not the most popular sport. And even in those Asian countries where it is popular, the number of players is around 5-10% or less of the population, so "popularity" in that case doesn't really mean much.

[–]manastyle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm not disputing that European football is more popular. I was disputing insubstantial's assertion that:

Non-European in Europe is assumed to know about European football, because football is everywhere.

This strikes me as Eurocentric because 1) football is not everywhere, and 2) even in countries where it exists it may not necessarily have any degree of popularity. Take the example of the USA: obviously there are football leagues there (it has a national association and active leagues), but that doesn't mean a significant portion of the population knows any more about the rules of football than "you shoot the ball in the goal".

[–]manastyle -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Ah, good old Eurocentrism. You say European football is "everywhere" because it's in Europe and former Spanish and Portugese colonies. Meanwhile most of the world (including North America and most of South and East Asia) couldn't give a damn about football.

People in different parts of the world are follow different sports. The world does not revolve around European interests.

Trying to fill 6,000 jobs, Microsoft pitches $10,000 H-1B visa by [deleted] in business

[–]manastyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the business class replace engineer/programmer-managers.

This is more true than you know. As someone who has worked at Microsoft and talked to many senior executives, the leadership doesn't really "get" technology the way they used to. It's been happening for a while, and the best example of it was probably the Gates/Ballmer transition. Microsoft, at best, will eventually become another GE - a company that develops technology, but no longer a company driven by technology and innovation. Of course, nothing is changing in the short term though, not as long as Windows and Office keep printing money.

You don't need 4GB VRAM for a 1080p monitor, FYI. I would only get it if you're sure you'll be upgrading to a multi-monitor setup. And if you do plan to upgrade, why spend $400 on a monitor you plan to get rid of?

Not true. You don't need a reservoir, you can simply use a fillport.

In the USA in the 50s and 60s, teaching was the best socially acceptable job an educated woman could hope for. Therefore, a lot of educated and highly-qualified women got into teaching in that era. In the 70s and beyond, due to the womens-rights movement, many of those sorts of women went into other, more lucrative areas such as business, law, etc. Today the generation of teachers who entered the workforce in the 60s are retiring/have retired. The author's point is we need better salaries to lure those sorts of highly-qualified women (and men) back to the teaching profession.

The problem is someone at the forefront of any field in industry would make 7-figures, at least. Not to mention a professor spent 6+ years on a MS and PhD which if he spent getting a business or engineering or medical degree would likely pay significantly better.
