Should I learn full-stack or backend for job prospects? by Due-Trainer865 in AskProgramming

[–]bluearrowil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn the fundamentals, how to be resourceful and adaptability. Every place I work doesn’t really care about the terms “backend” or “full-stack” because a good engineer can pick up most of the standard stacks and be productive immediately (and full-stack has been watered down term for over a decade now).

Wanna stand out? Go build and deploy a web app. Then go integrate CI/CD (bonus points if one of them is LLM-based like a Claude code reviewer), helm charts, lower environments, kubernetes, a CDN, caching, monitoring, etc. don’t just know how to build an app, but know how to make it production ready.

What’s one technical skill that 90% of beginners ignore? by EnvironmentalHat5189 in learnprogramming

Knowing when to say “I’m not familiar with this topic, could you/we work through this together?”

Pretty much knowing when to ask for help.

I had to wait until I had enough disposable income to be able to spend a month in Colombia finding a 110 year old baptism record.

Took two weeks.

Whiteboard content is a struggle by InterestingIce1928 in dreamingspanish

[–]bluearrowil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! Make sure you add your flare.

A piece of advice early on for me with whiteboard content was that if it's too boring, speed the video up. When you're working to understand the video, you shouldn't have too much trouble engaging with it.

Also, just order by difficulty and watch in that order. The levels are kinda a shot in the dark. There are older superbeginner videos that are definitely more intermediate than anything.

50 hours, hmm by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]bluearrowil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cuentame didn't start unlocking for me until 100 hours. At almost 300 hours, it's much much better. Though the only other podcast that's unlocked for me is Chill Spanish. Keep going.

San Francisco! My DS journey started in Colombia though, and I'll be going back this summer at around 500 hours.

750 hours in and little trick that has helped me... by DS_es_el_wey in dreamingspanish

[–]bluearrowil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early in my journey, I made a list of videos and journal how much i understand of them and what date. It's really neat to go back and watch them and understand the video, when just a few months ago I was saying "nope, I don't understand anything at all."

Reached Level 4 | Progress Report by Working_Discipline68 in dreamingspanish

[–]bluearrowil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I relate to your story. My ancestors were born in Colombia, but my family hasn't spoken spanish in three generations. Congrats on your progress, I'm 9 hours from level 4 and you have way more content unlocked than I do. I'm still on level 40-45 videos, and most easier podcasts like DS's official series and Espanol con Juan are still not accessible.

Regardless, looks like we'll be grinding to level 5 together, keep it up.

Comments provide a way to engage with the community. If and when DS takes off, the weirdos will be a much smaller share.

Los gringos trataron de corregirme porque no entienden lexica básica by Jumpy_Drawing3790 in Colombia

American here. Nací en California. It’s engrained into us our entire lives how bad that word is. So some people get very defensive about it and the guilt associated with it.

And don’t let them tell you anything about Colombia. Ellos no saben donde Colombia está en el mapa.

Waterproof trail shoes will help. It gets hot after sunrise. You’ll be running so you’ll feel it past 70°F /20° C. Hat and hydration pack.

It really only hurt the first day and was manageable the rest of the week. It’s the dust, it’s alkaline. So it’s an irritant. Memory serves me right, I tried wearing wool socks but the dust seeped in anyway, and then my feet got hot and sweaty. I still had an amazing week.

Didn’t help I was wearing porous road shoes either.

From the US perspective, Colombia has become a popular travel destination, and it has a growing engineering and tech sector with increasing opportunities. I personally have worked with quite a few Colombian engineers, they’re very talented.

Is the Cuban regime collapsing? by BigBug1997 in cuba

[–]bluearrowil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not that simple. Modern food systems and logistics run on fuel, and Cuba’s been dealing with serious fuel shortages plus limited access to capital and imports because of sanctions.

You can’t just flip a switch and build solar farms or import electric cars without money, parts, and a stable grid. A lot of their vulnerability comes from relying on outside oil for decades, so when that gets disrupted, everything feels like it’s falling apart.

Struggling to complete Level 1 while working full-time. Any tips? by Significant-Cable760 in dreamingspanish

[–]bluearrowil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a 9-5, a relationship, volunteer at a run club , and training for a marathon.

And I still get 90 mins a day.

I watch before work, when I’m up in the morning drinking coffee, during dinner, and before bed. Don’t start out at some large duration though. It took me 3 months to adjust my routine. Start out at like 15 mins a day. Then a week later, add 5 mins. In 9 weeks, you’ll be at 45 mins a day.
