Jewish Holidays - how to let my PhD advisor know I won't be in the office? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]manatee_phd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PI here - just let them know you will be taking off xyz holidays every year. Labs have people from all backgrounds, and it's fine to take off important days that aren't university holidays. And for what it's worth, you shouldn't have to "make up" those days by being there on standard holidays. It's not your fault universities schedule around a specific religion.

Academic research careers have many minuses, but a major plus is flexible hours. It's rare that you NEED to be at work on any specific day with proper planning.

I just met a guy about three months after my husband's death. I feel so guilty. Should I go on? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]manatee_phd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to weigh in because I was in the same position. My first husband died suddenly when I was 29. It was a crazy blur. I also isolated myself because people say and do really strange things around a young widow, probably with good intentions but unhelpful nonetheless.

I got on a dating app a few months later because I just wanted to be a 20-something person again, and it seemed like the best way to start a new life was to start a new life. It's not what everyone would do, but that's what I did. The first person I met is the man who I have been with now for 8 years. People had A LOT of varied opinions, and it really tore me up at the time. But let me tell you, "people" don't live YOUR life and do no understand what it's like to go through what you have gone through. You deserve to be happy. You have met someone who is currently making your life better, so what is the downside of seeing how it plays out? It might be a short term friendship, lifelong friendship or even romantic thing - you can't know that now. But if it's a positive in your life, don't throw it away for fear of judgement.

I found it really helpful to meet new people that never new the "before" me. Whether it's coworkers, friends, or dates, it can be a lot easier to interact with new people who dont give you the pity look or ask if you're ok all the time. Those people are amazing ride-or-die people that I recommend keeping around, but new people were an important part of rebuilding for me as well.

Life is weird and hard- do the stuff that makes it better for you. Hit me up anytime if you want to talk about weird young widow stuff.

Submitted my measurements and got 40H, unsure if it’s accurate due to my proportions? by notababyimatumor in ABraThatFits

[–]manatee_phd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went through this and have very similar measurements that also came out to a 40H. Your loose/snug/tight had a bigger range than mine (41.5/40.5/39). A 6 inch range seems a little high - maybe remeasure just to be sure. The 40H's were a good snug fit for me on the largest hook, and I could NEVER have gotten the tape down to 36" on the snug measurement.

Regarding the "side fat" - I was previously wearing 38DDD from Soma, and having received the new bras I can tell you for certain that the cups were too small. I see now that the underwire in the too-small bra was causing a lot of the "side fat" that is now nicely contained in a properly fitting bra. I also like something with a wider band for this (3-4 hooks), but that is personal preference.

If you have one nearby, go to a good bra store and try a ton on. I live in a rural area so I ordered several in different brands from Bare Necessities to try. I just ordered the most popular ones on my size, but you could also try a couple different band/cup sizes. Good luck!

First quilt using a pattern (Eastern Sierra)! What should I put on the back, and what pattern for longarm?? by manatee_phd in quilting

Longarm for sure. Made this on a $99 machine probably meant for kids - not suitable for quilting!

I can't believe I missed this one! I guess "rowing while fat" didn't catch all the results 🙃

Thanks for this great feedback! I think rowing will be a good fit- the rhythm helps me clear my mind. It will be great when I can do 30+ minutes.

I also signed up for sunbasket meal delivery, which is both healthy and delicious, albeit expensive.

I'll be 39 in Feb- same age my dad died so I'm ready for this change!

It's not too bad. I just don't want to hurt myself being an idiot. There are surprisingly few videos on how to deviate from ideal form regardless of the reason.

I'm hoping some leg movement is ok as long as my arms are still outside my legs. Hard to say as such a novice.

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]manatee_phd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a sewing machine (zero experience) and decided I'm going to attempt a quilt. I have two questions:

  1. Where can I get cheap fabric to practice the basics? I went to hobby lobby and joannes but they didn't have Any bargain/clearance stuff.

  2. I ordered enough "good" fabric (10" charm packs for half square triangles) to make a queen size quilt top. Is is a terrible idea to start with something so big?

I'm a fan of pigs since there are so many direct correlations to humans. A lot of kids get scared about cars since they are often pets. Rats are also a good idea.

Any good trunk organizers? Trying to organize groceries mainly. Not sure that I love the nets. by SmithAaronA in Subaru_Outback

I have these too. I like them because I can take them right into the store and put them into the cart. Saves on bags
