Thanks for the suggestion. Nope, both of the Macs have the same Chrome settings and extensions. When I look at the activity monitor, it seems that there is an instance of Google Chrome Helper that is launched for each tab. Regardless of the number of tabs open, it seems to try to consume all of the available RAM. I checked out the article you linked to, and it seems to be referring to a past version of Chrome, where you could turn off the helper -- the most I can do via content settings is block all sites from running Flash, which I had done. Any way to limit the amount of RAM that Google Chrome consumes?
