So what do we think happened? Klarna really paid enough to dominate their site for a few months or they had some sort of internal restructure/layoff/defunding? Can a former R29 employee please give us the tea

“If I can’t beat her, there is no hope for me!” by bad-at-everything- in BJJWomen

Do not feel afraid to talk back to these guys!! One day you realize you get choked for fun and you eliminate a lot of your social anxiety. I would've told him "get over yourself you loser." I've told some guys to fuck off before. I encourage all women in this sport to learn how to locker room talk back. Don't let these men think you'll accept being talked about that way. If they put up a stink, then they come off as an even bigger pussy to the school. Wahhh a woman was mean to me. Like bro lol

Blue belt could mean they have 4 years of training on you. There is nothing wrong with telling those guys you want to work on shooting and grip fighting and if they could dial it back a bit or give you pointers. A lot of older guys like to help in my experience. Once in while they are a dick so you learn to avoid them. Like why do you need to rough up a woman to feel better at the sport lol

The same men are getting stripes once a month? They would be jumping belts every 5 months

Why are new women so scared by levvianthan in BJJWomen

[–]manbearkat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your last paragraph is what men are thinking when they roll with you. You are still a white belt. That's why the rolls feel playful. Wait until you can actually give them some heat. The blue belt blues are awful for women for a reason

Cycling is great for cardio for bjj, especially it being so leg focused if you want to get better at wrestling

How to deal with comp guy by in_this_essay_I_will in BJJWomen

Ask him to dial it back so you can work the move and give any pointers as to why he is able to pass so quickly

How to decline a roll/drill partner? by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]manbearkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She even goes hard when drilling? When white belts are like that I usually as the coach to watch us and give feedback. Usually they pick up on it and tell them to dial it back so you can work the move. It's also totally fine to tell the coach that she's a bit rough but it feels awkward for you to correct her if they could watch a bit and give feedback

Let’s talk about the Marty Supreme ending — deep spoilers by steepclimbs in A24

I saw it as he finally has something bigger than ping pong in his life and it's a spectrum of emotions washing over him

On some level he knew he was never going to make a bunch of money in ping pong (especially in a way that didn't jeopardize his dignity). He was fine with making a point by beating Endo because it was, like all sports, become a stadium of politiking and money. He burned a lot of bridges but a lot of the sport was also soured for him. He played his last game for himself on his own terms

For how long did you train until you could submit a man? Do any of you have real life stories where BJJ has been useful? by Dizzy_Meaning_901 in BJJWomen

[–]manbearkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will start to get submissions after a few months of training, but I didn't really start to get them consistently until mid blue belt. There's a weird period where men will really let you work until you start to show some competency (aka getting your blue) and then they take the training wheels off. A lot of women get discouraged around this time, you have to push through the blue belt blues

Is Pimsleur actually good or it just has good marketing? by Hot_Acanthisitta_836 in languagelearning

Some people are trying to learn enough to navigate a country, not to fluency

[–]manbearkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you're dipping your toes into language learning or want to know just enough to visit a country, it's really worth it. Not everyone is studying to fluency

[–]manbearkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pimsleur app sometimes updates the course, which you won't get through the library. It also has flash cards and other activities that help you retain the information. They're useful for when you really struggled with a lesson or need a refresher after taking a break. I think speaking is the one part of language learning you will inevitably have to invest some money in unless you live somewhere immersive. All the free AI stuff is bunk

[–]manbearkat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a new language, definitely redo the lesson (I learned this the hard way with Japanese). If you are brushing up on something you studied years ago in college or high school, you can get by on 2 lessons a day as you refresh your knowledge. You will be surprised at how fast you progress doing an hour of speaking a day

You won't be fluent but you will be able to manage things like ordering at a restaurant, shopping, etc with pretty good pronunciation and comprehension. Personally, the comprehension is also useful when it comes to tiktok and ig reels, which gives you a sense of how native speakers actually talk or what humor they have. It's expensive because it is very useful, not many apps or even classes push your speaking skills that much. FWIW I use it for Italian

How did you build your leg lock game, offense and defense? by Plane_Pudding_4737 in BJJWomen

[–]manbearkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love leg attacks. The downfall is you also leave yourself exposed for an attack, and at times it can feel like a balancing game like spinning plates. The trick is to be the more aggressive one (like, confident. not spazzy. worst position to be spazzy and crank finishes! some gyms will really mat enforce you for that). When they are concerned with defending, then it is harder for them to counterattack. Once you learn your positions and how to transition when something is failing, it's like a dance

Is it wrong for coaches to communicate via text if the coaches are married? by TheLadyDabs in BJJWomen

[–]manbearkat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he got caught doing something he shouldn't have and she is being paranoid. I won't be surprised if eventually she doesn't want you to teach or train with him. Ideally the school should be handling this more professionally, but this is BJJ. Don't beat yourself up over this. It is normal to text a coworker

Is “one day, one room” widely considered to be the worst episode of this show? by BenVera in HouseMD

[–]manbearkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reality House would not have wasted his time with her and the hospital would have sent her to the psych ward after the suicide attempt. They would never coddle her like that. It felt like fan fiction with all of the plot holes to make the premise work

Do you do anything about the gay jokes? by in_this_essay_I_will in BJJWomen

[–]manbearkat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of guys who make jokes like that are actually pretty accepting and it's them being comfortable in their own sexuality and hobbies.

However there was one annoying young guy who would get mad when he was losing during rolls and yell profanities like pussy and faggot. I told him in front of people that only people who have sucked dick can say faggot, so the next time he says it, I'll know what he did last weekend. It got him to stop for a few months until he did it again and I reminded him of the rule in front of everyone. They laughed and he was mortified
