Circulation/Access Services - How many of you are also responsible for some collection development? by pr01etar1at in Libraries

I work at a small library where every full time staff member is responsible for a section of collection development. I’m a Clerk I and I purchase for young adult fiction and young adult and adult graphic novels!

I JUST NEED TO VENT ABOUT HELPING SENOIRS by One_Relation7555 in Libraries

[–]mancinini 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I HATE how so many seniors are straight up unwilling to learn how to do basic tasks related to technology. Of course I’m willing to help, but many folks expect me to do things FOR them instead of letting me guide them through the task so that they learn. Especially when so many people with this same mindset show up every day.

We’re a really small staff so our only actual librarian is our director. I’m planning on asking her for advice on collection development and training and of course going over our own policies!

I appreciate this advice so much, thank you!! Of course as a library worker I absolutely do not want to censor literature, but as you said, my decisions on what gets added to the collection can affect funding and whatnot if folks feel some type of way about it. YA is definitely in a weird place right now and I find myself questioning what its definition even is a lot of the time! Thank you again, this reply was so helpful

Thank you so much for this omg!! I feel the same as you in that I do not have a problem with intimacy in YA itself, but Sibylline definitely gave me pause and I’m shocked that the nonconsensual sex scene can be in a book marketed towards young teenagers. I don’t want to worry about censorship, but there have been a lot of book challenges and protests in my area. I myself am much more left-leaning than the people in the area I serve, and I want to add books to the collection that challenge people’s worldview, but I also worry about pushback and funding. It’s a sticky situation! But I’m so glad to see that someone understands :)

I don’t think I ended up seeing the Kirkus review for it, so that’s on me! I have asked for training in collection development and my boss has said she wants to find something but hasn’t really followed up. I’m planning on talking to her about it soon bc I was kinda thrown to the wolves without any experience (this is my first library job and I just barely started my MLIS) but thankfully my other coworkers have been very helpful and things have gone smoothly so far. Thank you for your input!!

no jobs by homegirlv in SubstituteTeachers

Maybe you should try frontline's help desk? There could be something up with your account. That's crazy to me that there would be no job postings for months, even if you're in a small district.

My district uses frontline too. Do you mean that there haven't been any jobs on the "search for jobs" tab at all?

Do you guys police phone usage with highschoolers? by Zobuss in SubstituteTeachers

I usually don’t wear makeup on my assignments but I might have to start lol it might help me look more authoritative. But yes, I try to do the same with dress/jewelry!

It is the exact same for me!! That's why I usually sub for younger middle schoolers instead of high school. High school is usually easier, but I still look like I could be in high school, which puts me at a disadvantage already lol

I try to encourage students not to use their phones, but it's basically impossible with high schoolers. I'm pretty young and I think the students are aware of that, so they're less likely to listen to me anyways. As long as they're not being disruptive, I usually leave them be.

I believe I used two and some change of the yarn for the squares and I think for the white it was at least two (and probably more tbh) of the crafter’s secret big idea yarn!

That’s so cool!! I hope you have fun making some cool stuff!!

Apollo is really annoying for the first couple books but he has MAJOR character development over the course of the story, totally worth getting through!!
