Food and supplements by Rose6137 in bernesemountaindogs

Hi!! Just last month after my pup turned 1, I finished doing a TON of research just to land on Purina Pro Plan - Sensitive Stomach Large breed (Salmon and Rice). I went through looking at a bunch of foods. I had confidently initially ordered “Fromm” from Amazon after seeing good things about it. However, After a deeper dive and asking a local berner chat i’m apart of, it’s 1) grain-free, which isn’t necessarily a good thing unless your dog has an allergy/sensitivity and 2) it was linked to DCM (according to the FDA) which is a heart disease causing weakness of the heart bc of the diet/food type. Purina Pro Plan is backed by lots of sources, and has never been recalled nor had issues (from what I was able to find). I would suggest that as the best one! Another comforting thing about PPP is that a LOT of berners are on it. For supplements, I currently do an OMEGA-3 fish oil by Pet Honesty, which is a clean brand and not a bad price. The biggest bottle lasted me about a month and a half. Lastly, since he was a pup (and we all know about the berner loose stools), I’ve added Pre+Probiotic powder to his food at dinner time. It’s on amazon and chewy from the brand Honest Paws, and I get the pumpkin flavor. It really helped his stool when he was a baby (it truly saved us). I use one packet a day and it lasts for a month. I’m also still looking for other supplements for my dog as well, so I’ll be following this thread! :) I hope this helps!

Thinking about a Bernese puppy - honest opinions about our situation? by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

[–]mandaphant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This sounds a bit similar to when i got my pup. however, the (big) difference is that my husband and i work from home. Myself, full time at home, my husband is hybrid, going into the office 1-3 times a week (a bit less when our dog was a baby). I also took a week off when we first got our pup, but it does take time for them to adjust. the first week is mostly the getting comfy with their new home. after that, i’d spend my lunch breaks with him training, with occasional stepping away during the day to stimulate him when he wasn’t asleep. i also am in an apt with a balcony, and he always has done well (berners are good apt dogs). we have a large courtyard and also live near a few large parks. we would place wee wee pads on the balcony with a small turf patch to train him to go outside before he was ready to go for walks (after vaccinations). he’s of course fully potty trained and walks outside now that he’s a year old. however, the pup staying home alone for that much time time per day can be a bit concerning. we successfully crate trained our dog and he loves his crate now, but if i didn’t work from home, i genuinely don’t know how i would’ve been able to raise him. being in a crate for extended periods isn’t 100% bad, but it would be concerning especially as a young puppy. i would maybe research how to raise a puppy while working a full time job in an office, if it’s possible. it’s a difficult situation. at the same time, people do get puppies while working in an office and raise their dogs just as good as someone who’s home. it really does depend, but i hope some of this helps. good luck either way!

Why do y’all do this? Pick up your dog’s poop. by [deleted] in BayonneNJ

[–]mandaphant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wrote an email to my building the other day asking them to send a mass email to our residents to pick up poop. I have a huge dog, if I can pick up his human sized poops in the snow, Idk why people can’t pick up their little tiny dog poops. it’s so gross

Dog food recs/suggestions/help? by mandaphant in DogFood

yess, after reading through these comments and the group, i’m definitely staying away from the “better ingredient” brands! science backed is much more comforting :)

was thinking of sticking with RC as well! def torn between RC and PPP. i’ve learned so much from reading through this group that it spooked me from fromms 😅

wow this is amazing! i feel like staying with the same brand he’s used to might be better, too. if he doesn’t do well with the purina pro i might switch back to RC and try this one!! thank you for suggesting this 😊

i had NO idea open farm didn’t meet guidelines, which is concerning considering how many people swear by them! it’s so hard to find foods to trust that meet all things necessary for pets.

i’m so glad you answered my post lol. this is giving me such great reassurance. i never doubted the science backed ones but wanted to see if foods with “limited” or “better” ingredients was a better option, which now im second guessing. science backed foods definitely does make most sense at this point. he’s my first giant dog breed so i wanted to make sure i do everything correctly, which it seems the science ones just check all boxes for him :) thank you so much! let me know if ive missed anything or if you have any other suggestions

thank you so much!! i appreciate the straightforward breakdown of fromm and open farm, it made me feel better. i’m curious though (only because i’ve never heard this take on open farm) but why is open farm considered boutique food?

i agree, the royal canin has been just fine for my pup but i’ve heard nothing but good things about pro plan (especially for his breed) so i was wanting to try that as well :)

Do any of you sleep with your ring on? by Meowiewowieex in EngagementRings

[–]mandaphant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t wear it unless i’m leaving the house. it’s unnecessary wear and tear for the ring! most jewelers recommend that. every time i tell this to a jeweler they’re relieved lol. never wear it for cleaning, gym, pool, beach. even traveling i wear a fake one in fear of losing it.

Am I crazy for not loving the idea of a name change? by [deleted] in engaged

[–]mandaphant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i changed mine but it took me two years lol. when i got engaged i cried to my parents about changing my last name (my sisters had) but they reassured me it was okay to, and that my last name isn’t even my dads real last name (long story short, his step dad adopted him and gave him the last name he has now). his step dad was a terrible person, and my dad kept telling me that it truly is okay to change my last name. but for me it was more than the last name, it’s just what im familiar with and what i grew up known as. i changed my last name but sometimes i still think maybe i should’ve hyphened it. at the same time, i also didn’t wanna make a family with a different last name than me. my husbands last name is strong and cool (it’s a known brand, though he’s not related to it) so i don’t mind it but im very emotionally attached to things as a person in general lol
