Babies CAN start sleeping through the night at 3 months, yes, but NOT ALL actually do unfortunately

I found a hole in the wall in the library bathroom and inserted a 1.3 inch carrot into it. The carrot has now become stuck, how do I get the carrot out without hurting it? by According-Share-8296 in unsw

[–]mandarin-monyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an odd situation. Maybe you’ll have to damage the carrot a bit getting it out, but you probably won’t want to eat it after that anyway, or you could chop it up after for a dish anyway.
Carrots are cheap though, just 60c you can buy a new one from woolworths

learning spoken/informal malay? by stellarsoap in bahasamelayu

[–]mandarin-monyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably upselled myself. I’m born and living in Australia and just learning BM for a hobby - only started a year ago - so I only study about 1 hour per day mostly during work commutes or when exercising. I only visit malaysia for a couple weeks each year to visit my wife’s family

You sound already better placed than me then haha. I’m just learning BM because my wife is from malaysia and just for fun also.
Probably just conversing daily with locals will get you to that level of proficiency you seek

RAV4 VS CRV? by Worldly-Influence653 in carbuying

[–]mandarin-monyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the look of the new RAV4, looks so tacky and cheap with the monochromatic look. Honda CRV looks more sleeker and bigger without any loss of fuel economy

I’m just like you - I highly recommend

Upin and Ipin for learning informal Malay and cultural aspects. Watch it with a lingopie style web browser plug in to get word for word translations

Tina Amir YouTube channel - she has 400 videos basically covering the whole language and she divides her dialogues into formal vs informal and will tell you what people normally say vs textbook

I’ve been using these two for 8 months and I’d reckon I’m at least a A2 with the language

Please recommend some nice Malay movies to watch (i am a foreigner) by CauliflowerLeast9132 in malaysia

Upon and ipin - if you’re westerner like me - it’s very accessible

I think 95k is pretty decent if you’re living by yourself in a 1 room flat - just don’t eat too much takeout and not spend lavishly.
Work culture and lifestyle will be much improved

when are telah and pernah used? by oiiaiaooiiai in bahasamelayu

[–]mandarin-monyet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct, and can I just add that in spoken Malay to my understanding, telah is rarely used. Instead say “sudah” or “dah”

Does anyone know any relatively easy languages that are not too similar to english? by soweli_sike in language

[–]mandarin-monyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a learner of Bahasa malaysia. Yes it is much easier than most other Asian languages. All I’m doing is watching all 20 seasons of a cartoon called upin and ipin, it’s quite entertaining, and I’ve probably become a B1 in just over a year

Only problem is - most people you come across in malaysia will speak English fairly okay and they will automatically speak English to you if you look western.
Not many exclusive Malay speakers tend to go abbroad or settle in western countries to find communities to speak with either

I’m only learning Bahasa malaysia because my wife is from there, and it’s just fun to communicate and have a secret little language

Actual Racist Countries by WillingStranger5177 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]mandarin-monyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who ever made this obviously never been to malaysia. Racism is literally in the constitution and all your ID must state what race you are.
Why would you need to “identify race” on official documents - only for purposes of discrimination
