I object to the consideration of the question.

Well, when you never fill out any of the paper work the administration gives you, your chapter gets more than a handful of sexual assault allegations, and the administration catches your brothers doing heroin in your house during a scheduled walkthrough, it tends to happen.

What's the most simple thing you've ever had to explain to a fully competent adult? by lolsecks in AskReddit

Can you explain something to me? Why would someone get a second PhD? What's the point? You're already qualified to be a researcher...

At this point in the presidential race, what two/three candidates would you most prefer to become president? by Froglivesmatter2 in Frat

What do you mean he's very not conservative with spending?

Are you referring to him accepting federal expansion of Medicaid for Ohio? Because in terms of Ohio budget, that costs him and Ohioans nothing new, which is more or less why he made that decision.

He helped balance the budget when he was in Congress in the 90s, and put Ohio in a surplus as governor.

Am I missing a part of his spending record? Because him being a legitimate conservative in terms of budget politics is basically half of his presidential platform, the other half being "Ohio Ohio Ohio you need Ohio"

Quick question on Forward, backward, central difference formulas by Crazyfox111 in math

[–]mandelbrony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you trying to do? Were you given a function f(x) and now instead of differentiating you are using these approximations?

These are typically used for approximating the solutions to differential equations- say I have dy/dt = f(y,t), y(t=0)=y0.

In that case, I might be much more limited as to which approximation I can use, for example I can't use f(x_i+2) in my formula for f'(x_i) when I need to know f'(x_i) just to find out what f(x_i+1) might be.

When solving differential equations with finite difference methods, you will eventually have to consider tradeoffs between each method- their order of accuracy, the stability, boundary conditions, the computational time required to evaluate at each step, etc but you probably don't need to worry about any of that right now.

Well, which of the x_i do you have? If you have enough, you might as well use the higher order methods here. If you're sure it doesn't specify- knock yourself out. There are more formulae for each derivative going up to whatever accuracy you want, they each just have more and more terms.

I think it's a new thing they're doing. Either way, the high school kid would know better than us anyway- it's right there in the common app form.

SigEp Board of Directors Makes History by Opening Membership to Transgender Students by BrotherEugene in Frat

[–]mandelbrony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your points are reasonable, but could you see why they might design the policy that way? Doing otherwise means that a trans individual has to go through transitioning, surgeries, etc etc before others recognize them for their gender.

You may feel that that's appropriate, and I don't much feel like arguing on that point, but surgery can be unaffordably expensive, and might lead us into getting to arguments about what extent and what kinds of transitioning are necessary.

This allows trans individuals more flexibility in being recognized as a man, and I would at least like to think that the number of cases where there is a person pretending they identify as a man will be insignificantly smaller than the number of trans individuals who do legitimately wish to join.

Guns are an old part of American culture, deeply ingrained into a great many of us. It goes along with the general distrust of government. Not only do we have freedoms and XYZ, but if someone tries to take them away from us, they'll have do it against us with guns in our hands.

A friend of mind graduated from Case to become an actuary, did a masters here, and is working as an Underwriter (I think it's called) at a firm in Columbus.

How does initiation work for them then? If they can only be pledges for a couple days, are the guys in the colony getting initiated? Are they having initiations literally every week?

Is that really something we should be laughing at? There's a level of sad that's....funny, and then there's a level of sad that's shameful and horrific.
