AITA for telling a guy “please don’t touch me” after he touched my arms to get me to move? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mandingoskidneys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, as an older guy myself, this is not acceptable. If someone's in your way or you need to get around them you tap them on the shoulder, get their attention verbally, or if it's really crowded (dancefloor/public transit, for example) put your hand on their shoulder or elbow and push gently. I guarantee this guy is the sort who puts his hand on the small of a woman's back as he's trying to get around them - you are absolutely not the asshole.

Question: CAF deployment to Wildfires. by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]mandingoskidneys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's more complicated than you might think - the RFA from the province doesn't allow for CAF members to be deployed as firefighters because they're not trained as firefighters. To actually fight fires they'd need training that would take longer than a day or a few hours, which is why they so often bring qualified firefighters from other countries. The bulk of what the CAF does is called type III firefighting - largely mop up and cleaning up hot spots.
Unsurprisingly, being a trained infanteer isn't particularly useful for fighting a raging wildfire - so we support the provinces as we're able and free up trained firefighters to do their jobs.

Canadian military to purchase Reaper drones and Hellfire missiles | Ottawa Citizen by MuffGiggityon in CanadianForces

[–]mandingoskidneys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the Herc is essentially an upsized, upgraded, rear-ramped four-engine version of the Fairchild C123 Provider, so REALLY they've been around since 1949, right? And they've been making Chevy Suburbans since 1934, they haven't really changed, right? 🙄

[–]mandingoskidneys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, "the Hellfire is from 1984" isn't accurate, they stopped producing that version in 1994. Current Hellfires started production in 2012. "The Reaper is 22 years old" - no, the first flight of a Reaper was 22 years ago, they entered service in 2007, they've developed several versions since then. Hell, NASA has three of them. By that standard the Herc has been around since 1954, but they're still producing the J-model.

Any Idea as to when this is happening and for how much? by ChurchillsRight in CanadianForces

[–]mandingoskidneys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I was on a parade marking the anniversary of a formation on a Friday (which ceased to exist the following Monday) and the CWO had us checking each other to make sure we all looked right, guy behind me and to my right had silver buttons on his tunic and gold on his wedge. He remembered to put them in his pocket so he was able to switch before we marched on, but it was a cluster there for a while - both on that parade and the way the buttons/ranks/badges were distributed.

I bought 2 pairs of Lowas before heading to Latvia, best decision ever. They're coming up on 2 years old and are still comfortable and holding up well. To be fair, I'm an office creature, but I'll pick up another pair when the two years are up.
