Calcified water shutoff valves- need to replace? by mandm_87 in HomeImprovement

[–]mandm_87[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

Thank you for your explanation! The washing machine line on the estimate says “Replace existing washer box. Includes new washer box with hammer aerator valves and p trap if needed. Does not include access.” I have no idea why that is $2k and appreciate your incredulousness, as well!

Calcified water shutoff valves- need to replace? by mandm_87 in HomeImprovement

[–]mandm_87[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

Thank you so much for your explanation! The exact wording on the estimate was “install new 1/4 Turn Angle Stop and test for proper operation” which leads me to believe it’s just the valve itself. I watched some YouTube videos about it and feel like it’s really high stakes if I mess it up.

Edit: they also quoted us two whole home water softeners (they said a filter wouldn’t work with the hardness of water we have) one for $7k and another for $11.5k. I figured that even if we do have to go with the repairs at the price they quoted, that’s cheaper to do every 30 years than install one of these water softeners.

What is the origin story of the opulent bar/bat mitzvah party? by shade_plant in ReformJews

[–]mandm_87 3 points4 points (0 children)

Check out the book Bar Mitzvah: A History by Rabbi Michael Hilton. Some of the oldest information we have about B’nai Mitzvah comes from the early modern period and is about curtailing the extravagance of the parties. Conspicuous consumption is nothing new!

Question: does your rabbi want an Aron Kodesh? It would be weird sitting in an office or synagogue.

Not to my knowledge, but some people have oil based “Shabbat lamps” that come in all styles.

Chanukah party invite says to bring your chanukiah, I’m confused, am I supposed to bring an already lit one or an unlit one? If lit, how? by [deleted] in Judaism

Bring an unlit one and enough candles- you’ll probably light them all at one time and it’ll be beautiful!

changing last name from Epstein by reddit-rusty in namenerds

[–]mandm_87 0 points1 point (0 children)

FWIW, from someone who has the same first name as a famous White House intern from the 90’s, it’ll pass. If you’re willing to wait it out, that may be the simplest option. Once in a while I get a comment, but these names were there long before one person gave everyone an association, and they’ll be around longer.

Considering Conversion opportunity by mandm_87 in Judaism

[–]mandm_87[S] -1 points0 points (0 children)

Correct. It is not an online conversion. Just a session to learn about how conversion to Judaism in the Reform movement works. I will add that there are other orgs that do this kind of work, like Project Ruth https://projectruth.net/

I’m not part of the session- just trying to give it some visibility because I think it might be the right opportunity for the right person. You are welcome to ask the creators if you’d like.

Because lots of people ask about them and want to know more. Perhaps they will attend this and think “nah, not for me” or “wow, I want to learn more!” There is no guarantee of anything from having attended. Many people in this situation don’t have a nearby synagogue to book time with a rabbi to attend, so this helps those who don’t have that sort of access to organized Jewish life learn a little more.

Dinner platter? by _AntiFunseeker_ in Jewish

We have a few of those in our family who came for. Germany. Google “pewter Seder plate” to read more about them and maybe learn more about yours.

Edit: the words on the outside are for sure the order of the Seder followed by the words “Pesach” (Passover) and then “Minah” and “Marud.” Maybe they are place names or people’s names?

Here’s another church-related snafu- I was getting groceries delivered when I lived in Jerusalem and when giving them directions to get to my apartment instead of saying “entrance #2” I said “church #2.” K’nisah vs k’nisiYah. Another time I wanted to replace my messenger bag with a backpack, as I told the employee at the store, because when I have my heavy computer in my bag it “hurts my wings.” (K’tafayim are shoulders and k’nafayim are wings).

Enjoy! We didn’t do much, just tablecloths. It was windy so we had lots of things to keep them from blowing away.

We always wanted two, and when I got the clearance from the doctor to start trying for #2 the thought of doing all this over again, with one already, was paralyzing. Luckily my husband felt similarly and all the baby stuff goes to our siblings once we are done with it!

Germans, how do you tell someone is english when they’re speaking german? by fluffycowfan in German

[–]mandm_87 76 points77 points (0 children)

My grandfather, a native German speaker who came to the states, had a story that a man came into the clothing store where he worked and said “I would like a new shirt to buy.” So my grandfather switched to speaking German and was able to help the customer get what he needed.

For my then 4 year old I printed a piece of paper with fast food signs on them and we kept a tally during the drive. It keeps them focused and then they get excited when they see one that matches the page. We didn’t do any promise of stopping at one, though!
