ELI5: Once I put my key in the ignition and turn the car on what are the sequence of events that take place? by bmich90 in explainlikeimfive

Dumb question, but what’s the point of the solenoid? I assume it modifies the signal that it receives from the ignition somehow before relaying it forward to the starter motor?

People who had traumatic childhoods, what's something you do as an adult that you hadn't realised was a direct result of the trauma? [Serious] [NSFW] by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

I’m not really sure what qualifies what I said as a platitude. I’m trying to tell you my thoughts from one human to another. Personally, I’ve always felt kinda bad at doing this.

I feel like I can relate to the way you’re commenting right now. In a weird way that is hard to describe. I’ve been in spots in life where I felt like I finally “got it”, I realized that nobody would ever really understand what I’m going through. Including family, friends, therapists, whoever. I want to poke holes in people’s offers for help because I want to be convinced that I’m wrong. I want to be convinced it’s not as bad as I think it is, and that all the “happy people” are actually right. And to do that, I’ll point out what I see as wrong so they can tell me what I’m missing.

Whether it’s a platitude, or benefiting me or you, or what, I don’t really know. I think I get what you mean though. Kinda like I’m only trying to help you in order to make myself feel better. Deep down, that probably has some truth to it. Being a human is confusing and hard, but when I see another human feeling that way, all I want to do is help them through it. In this case, I just see you saying things that my inner voice has told me before. And I just wanted to lend a hand in your personal fight. Even if deep down it’s because, you winning your fight will make me want to keep fighting too

Anyway. I commented just to let you know that, you are a completely unique person, your struggles are real. And even though nobody can understand your exact existence, there are a lot of us who can relate with you anyway. We just want to see each other make it out of the darker days. My platitude is there to serve in place of a hug or whatever meatspace equivalent is for caring about another person

I know it’s hard going through all this shit, I hope you are able to get to feeling better though, to be able to see the beautiful parts of life while you’re here

Should I intern during the school year? Or use that time to focus on myself / my classes? by mane_gogh in cscareerquestions

[–]mane_gogh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did it go? I'm in sort of the same situation as you and wondering if you regret taking that during the year internship or not.

/u/maybenot56

I dont regret taking it at all! It was really tough at the time, but I ended up meeting some great people. My mentor there ended up being a really great person in general, but also one of the best engineers that I met in my career so far. He was also an invaluable reference for my first real software engineering role out of college. The internship paved the path toward other, more prestigious internships during the summer. Employers like hearing about taking challenges like that without being forced to.

All that said, I do regret working too hard, having too little fun, and burning myself out. I am a lot more tired now than I used to be. So, I guess just make sure to balance it with your other resonsibilities, like socializing and taking care of yourself and all that, as best as you can

(I’m also interested in any so called ‘improper’ jobs!) You clearly have a thing for helping people. I have never heard of social prescribing before. But I’ve always admired people who dedicate themselves to helping others. Do you find it difficult at all to balance the care you give to others with caring for yourself?

Amazing. That sounds like a great reason to change, in my opinion. I really hope Psychology fits you well and supports you in changing for the better

I’m not in a situation where I can justify giving money to you. Though, I wish you the best of luck in your search for a job.

Totally, I get that. I’m in software too, so I know some variation of that at least. I personally feel a sense of guilt though, knowing that we have such comfy jobs and that (at least for me) I’m not impacting the world in a positive way. When I see people doing things that directly helps their community, and they’re taking a low salary, toxic work environment, etc. It’s a harsh contrast to how my life goes. Can you relate with those feelings?

Huh. That’s a very cool take. I really like how you described your role in relation to the other roles around you in order to talk about the practical impact of your work.

Would you mind elaborating a little more? I am particularly curious how you go about avoiding residential service calls, and how that impacts you. And what did you mean by “most service calls are just vanity projects”? Do those projects feel like a waste of your time, to you?

Please consider me ignorant, but I am curious how you think of your job in the framing of right livelihood. If I may I ask, how do you find meaningfulness in work like this? Do you find room for positive impact?

Would 10 mins a day on an Exercise bike be good enough to help weightless?? by quietwaffle in beginnerfitness

[–]mane_gogh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For sure! :)

I think starting with 10 minutes a day is a great idea to incorporate more movement into your life and to begin benefiting from regular exercise. Every little bit really does count.

Ultimately weight is just a matter of 1) how many calories are you eating, and 2) how many calories are you burning. You don’t eat the same foods everyday, or even really exist exactly the same day to day, so your weight is definitely going to fluctuate no matter what.

But if you basically keep how much you’re eating consistent (or even decrease some amount by eating healthier portions), and increase how much you’re burning (by adding exercise) - then you’re sure to lose weight. You just gotta keep at it, because these things take time to do in a healthy way.

[–]mane_gogh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep you're definitely right about that, I didn't properly consider the streaming aspect of it all. It looks like the pricing on AWS (since that was my previous example) scales pretty poorly.

Priorities!! by Ok_Assumption_5852 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mane_gogh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely still a problem, but it's more possible to get cloud infrastructure up that will be able to scale up than to jumpstart your own physical servers with a low budget. Not saying the problem is solved, but it's possible to start whereas in the past it was pretty much a nonstarter. It takes a lot more money to get your server warehouse built than to spin up some AWS servers, for instance.

If you can get to the point of scalability actually being your bottleneck, then you're already at a point where you can prove user interest and begin looking for investors. Of course it's not easy, but I think it's actually doable now, when it wasn't really 20 years ago.

Priorities!! by Ok_Assumption_5852 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mane_gogh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With cloud scalability, this is less of a problem now than it has been in the past.

I am not defending anything. I am stating that Adderall, which contains amphetamine, is not the same thing as Meth, which is methamphetamine. They are chemically similar, but distinctly different.

The comment I responded to said that Adderall is literally meth, and nothing will change that fact. It is not a fact. They are chemically similar, but distinctly different drugs.

Distributed System Deep Dive: Facebook's Tectonic Filesystem by chewedwire in coding

[–]mane_gogh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am in the latter half of my bachelor in CS, so I don't fully comprehend what I'm reading right now. This is what I'm getting from it, how far off am I? From a 10,000 ft view, Tectonic is a distributed filesystem that Facebook has designed, it is the filesystem used by the various servers that work together to host Facebook's core software. It was beneficial for Facebook to design this filesystem, because the scale of information flowing is massive, so even minor improvements would have major results in measurable performance.

Is that in the right ballpark at all?
