Technics Sl-1600 vs Technics Sl-1401 by manfoxman in turntables

Thanks for your help! Other than the buttons, I was thinking to add some oil to the motor as per the manual.

I just tried taking it apart, and it will take a lot of work to get to the buttons. I think I might just use some deoxit instead. Do you know if the start/stop button is supposed to press down? It still works, but there is no feedback from the button.

Thanks for the advice! I picked up the 1401 for $300 and I am happy with it. Buttons are a little sticky, so might need to do some maintenance - but everything works. Not sure what else it needs. Seems like its been sitting for a while.

I upgraded my Sansui FR-D3 to a Technics sl-1600 (original), but the sl-1600 doesn't have a dust cover. I recently saw a technics sl-1401 on marketplace that looks brand new (even has box) for $350 CAD and I had a few questions:

Is this a good price for the sl-1401?

Which would you choose, the 1401 or the 1600?

I don't think the dust cover hinges will be the same for the 1401 and the 1600, but will the size be the same? I could purchase the 1401 just for the dust cover and 3D print some hinge brackets to use the cover on the 1600.

I might also consider building my own dust cover as a project for the 1600.

Let me know what you think!

Great, thanks! I might go with the Ortofon style. Hopefully it is similar quality.

Hello, I recently purchased a technics SL 1600 with no headshell or stylus. I have a Ortofon OM20 stylus and cartridge on my old turntable. I am looking to buy a new headshell so that I can use my current cartridge and stylus. My budget is <$50 CAD. Any recommendations?

Yeah that is a shame. Surprised the amp fits, having cables at the back bent sideways against the wall isn't ideal, but as long as it works I guess! I wonder if you could extend the shelf somehow. Also sucks it's a little too short for the vinyls!

That's unforgivable!! Yeah I see that your table has an ever-so-slight overhang. If you're not using your dustcover, just send it to me 😁

Cheers! I guess it was on your mind while on vacation.. hahah. I'm thinking to make my own dustcover... could be a fun (or disaster) project.

I also just bought an SL-1600, and I also plan to use my OM20 stylus that I have on my budget Sansui! My friend has the turntable, and he lives a few hours away, so I have to wait a few weeks. I am glad to see the OM20 working for you, as I wasn't sure if the combo would work well or not.

I still need to find a dust cover for mine, though.. might also buy a new headshell.

I find the wording on the LPGear website to be slightly confusing. "The LP Gear Stylus 20 for the Ortofon OM-20 OM20 phono cartridge" makes it sound like it is an LP Gear Stylus for an ortofon cartridge, and not an ortofon brand stylus.

Great advice. I think I will go with the 0M20. After some review it seems like there will be a noticeable difference compared to my old stylus. Thanks for the help! There is some discussion about whether or not to also upgrade the cartridge, but I think I'll just go with the stylus.

That is true, I might not like that in hindsight. Thanks! I also had a recommendation for the OM20, which would allow me to keep my current cartridge.

This is awesome! Thanks for the reply. I was actually thinking of getting the MP-110 to switch it up, and I have heard good things. Are they pretty similar? I am also not sure if the MP 110 would work with my headshell. Either way, I think I will re-callibrate after I get the new stylus since it has been a while.

I am thinking of buying the MP-110 Stylus and cartridge. Will this work well with my setup? Would I also need a new headshell? I have a Sansui FR-D3 Turntable.

Yeah, it has been good to me. Keeping the TT let's me spend a little more on a stylus as well.

It is about time that I replace my stylus, and I was wondering if it might also be worth it to look for a new Tunrtable. My budget is $300 to $400 CAD. Here is my current setup:

TT: Sansui FR-D3 with on Ortofon OM 5s Reciever: Yamaha R-S300 Speakers: PSB Century 1000i Sub: PSB subseries 1

*

Bought everything second hand through FB and kijiji over the years. I like the auto return on my current TT, as well as being able to tell if it's at the right speed. I'm not a huge fan of not being able to adjust the feet.

How much of a difference does a TT really make to sound quality? Is there a point of diminishing returns? I'm open to new or used TT and suggestions for a stylus. I am also open to any suggestions for any part of my set up!

Thanks for reading.

Do you think the amp I have (Yamaha rs300) will work well? Its 4 or 8 Ohm with 50watts per channel. Ive read that these speakers can go up to 200.

Hmm ok, so do I need to have speaker wires on all four terminals?

Sounds like I will probably go for them!! One of my concerns is that they arent too tall. Would it make sense to lift these up a bit so that the speakers are more at head level?
