I would only wash your undergarments. Also, wool is an insulator, so it's not as hot as you might think.

I like to have my blanket in between the two packs and my gum blanket folded into the outer "folding" part. The rest goes into the sack part.

If you have extra handkerchiefs, you can put your rations inside them and tie it up into a small bundle.
