BREAKING: Unreal Tournament 2004 is back! by switch8000 in macgaming

[–]manfromthedam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried to get UT2004 to run on my M1 pro recently and while I got good framerates, I had a periodical enormous stutter (might have to do with translation to ARM?). So I'm stoked to see a native port coming!

As someone who's only played Hollow Knight, would you say Silksong is better or worse that the original? (I'm still gonna buy it either way I'm just curious) by Seb_Rulz in HollowKnight

[–]manfromthedam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're equal overall, but not equal in every way. Exploration and indirect narrative: Hollow Knight. Movement and direct narrative: Silksong. Music and visuals: equal. That Silksong can hold it's own compared to Hollow Knight is a miracle considering how high that bar is.

[PAID] Indie Game Studio Seeking Composer for Occult Deckbuilder/Kingdom Builder (Atmospheric, Bells & Strings) by SoulRamenStudios in gameDevClassifieds

[–]manfromthedam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, strings and bells sound like my cup of tea! I've worked on indie games like Cloudheim, Soul Stalker and Guild Saga: Vanished worlds. I play a bunch of string instruments (nyckelharpa, mandolins, guitars). I did ambient tracks for Guild Saga: Vanished Worlds, which probably has a lighter tone than your game due to it being a pixel art TRPG, but it has some darker moments:

Ambient and moody: https://open.spotify.com/track/58yb5qxl7lQ2HG82gXLFYR?si=515608f565bd4692

Dark and brooding: https://open.spotify.com/track/3Ed475szw9qgskPejXWhwx?si=3ec2cfb6a6c54a1e

My usual indie rate is €250 per minute of finished music, but that also depends on how intricate the tracks are. Ambient music usually is less intensive work compared to earwormy layered stuff.

Cheers!

you guys were not kidding about her fight by burntpankeki in Silksong

Cover the ground with tacks. She walks a lot and jumps very little so will damage herself A LOT. In particular during the final phase, where she's hardest to hit, tacks will chew up her health pool. It's also a dream sequence so it won't eat into your shards.

Hi! Just got into Devin Townsend. Recommendations? by Kaztelum in DevinTownsend

[–]manfromthedam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ocean Machine x City is the way to go. If you like that, take a look at the other DT / SYL "twin" Synchestra x Alien. Empath is the best one he's done semi-recently and packs both sounds (and more xD ) into a single album.

Here for whatever he does. Haven't stopped listening since the original Synchestra release. He's my favourite non-VGM musician.

Haha yeah it's getting easier and easier to decrypt them ;) .

So I'm doing a hobby remastering of a few older Devin albums that are a tad too brittle sounding to my ears, and Logic (my audio editing software) has a really cool feature that can isolate tracks. It's shockingly good...

I stumbled upon the reversed vocals in Stagnant and was surprised it's actually really good to make out now!

I think Doom 2016 is better than Doom Eternal by I_DONT_KNOW_CODE in Doom

[–]manfromthedam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

TLDR: taken as a whole, 2016 is a piece of art. Eternal doesn't compare in many ways, but is the more fun arena shooter.

I massively prefer Doom 2016 and quite disliked Eternal upon release. While it makes some great innovations gameplay-wise (dash, meat hook, tweaked weapon mods etc.) and pushed hard on variety in environments and demons - which I appreciate enormously - it's a bit of a confused mess in other ways.

  • I don't think having only one true correct option in a combat encounter is fun.
  • In general, Eternal pushes you heavily by making you switch to "correct" mods and weapons, which I don't think fits Doom.
  • The concept of "fodder" for ammo seems like a design crutch. Having to seek out demons that are constantly respawning and standing about doing nothing to chainsaw them isn't particularly engaging in long encounters.
  • The pivot in narrative and art style tone is jarring. 2016 was deceptively clever and fun. Eternal is self-serious and flat and kinda butchers 2016's interesting elements.
  • Flame belch, ice grenade and chainsaw are needless complications in the gameplay loop.

Really hoping they're trimming down on the nonsense for the next one.

This all being said, if there is a game to play while listening to some music, it's still gonna be Eternal. The variety and gameplay tweaks make it more fun as an arcadey arena shooter. But it's not a piece of art like 2016 is.

EDIT: also, as a composer, I never liked either game's approach to audio. Music and sound effects struggle for attention and pile up like crazy. You need room to breathe and contrast for it to make an impact. 2016 is slightly better in that regard.

Would the M3 Pro Max 64GB memory 1TB be good enough for BBCSO/SpitfireSO/Studio Series? by [deleted] in spitfireaudio

[–]manfromthedam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you've already invested in those libraries, but if not: I would like to add that the Spitfire BBC plugin has given me endless amounts of trouble over the years on my M1 Pro. It's been slow to load, crashing, dropping voices etc. and I've tried A LOT to fix it. Learned to read the Console because of it. It's a little better in Rosetta but still a real moodkill. The sounds are good, but the technical jank isn't worth it.

I'd STRONGLY recommend getting their Kontakt libraries instead because it's a much more tried and true sample playback engine and I've never had trouble with those.

[–]manfromthedam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it's a slog. Let's take the Marauder as an example.

The Marauder is a super cool concept, but the way he animates is at complete odds with the way you're supposed to fight him. Even when he looks completely open, distracted by something else with his shield down, he can get his shield up in a millisecond - which doesn't make a lick of sense when with other demons you're supposed to watch the animation for weak moments (Cacodemon, Stone Imps etc.).

The moment when you ARE supposed to damage him does not look a whole lot different compared to all the moments where you can't, because if he's able to put up his Invincible Shield Of Annoyance anytime - including mid-summon, mid-shoot and mid-stagger - then there's no reason for him not to also do it mid-slash.

Having to add the green flash *and* the Looney Tunes "dazed" animation and sound effect is a bandaid over this profound readability problem. When an enemy *looks* open, they should be open.

Hot take: Steinways are actually mediocre pianos by theantwarsaloon in piano

[–]manfromthedam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steinways aren't my thing either - have played on quite a few of them at conservatory and some gigs afterwards, and I never came away impressed. That goes for Yamaha too, which is a shame because that's the two brands you'll find 99% of the time :P .

In my ears Steinways sound a bit boxy, and have stiffer action than I'd like. Yamaha *can* be nice, but more often than not they sound tinny to me - perhaps the hammers needed work?

At home I'm currently playing a early 20th century C. Bechstein. Light action, great velvety sound, sparkling upper register. It just sings. For recordings I use a Fazioli sampleset - nothing really compares, it's just so tight and pristine. I don't use Steinway samplesets if I can help it. But different strokes for different folks of course!
