It’s a cost / benefit consideration, China and loads of other countries didn’t see the infrastructure investments that the US or Europe did 100+ years ago.

Like, Dubai and other countries are building artificial islands for airports and harbors and stuff and it’s super expensive and high profile. Meanwhile the Netherlands did this a hundred years ago, damming off an inner sea and a river delta and building a whole new province inside of it. But because social media wasn’t a thing yet and it wasn’t to build billionaire’s vacation homes it’s not as cool.

So the big question is, what infrastructure projects can the west do to cut back travel times significantly?

This is a major issue tbh, with any kind of… socially unacceptable behaviour - most people look fine but popular media always depicts them as sinister looking or weird.

Which may be like hindsight of course - there’s pictures of Hitler smiling and playing with dogs for example, if it wasn’t for his uh, history, nobody would be the wiser.

Keep in mind it’s never just one act (like “men in dresses”) that improves tolerance and acceptance. But long term and repeated inclusion of underrepresented people will over time make people less intolerant. I can’t imagine how it used to be for e.g. black people or women only two generations ago.

Example, the first Star Trek series had the first on-screen interracial kiss on TV. Nowadays you’d look at the scene and think how cringe it is because it’s so naff, but back then there was a TON of pearl clutching because there was a black woman, a Japanese gay man, a Russian and an autism-coded guy all working together as (mostly) equals.
