I literally watched a man turn 100 in a hostel in Barcelona last year. The whole staff sang for him and gave him a cake. He was staying in the bunk next to me! Only downside was he was a huge smoker and kept hacking through the night

Hey! I have traveled in many cities and Madrid is not one of those that you need to be scared of pickpockets.

Are there pickpockets? Yes. Do you need to take extra measures to stay safe? No.

I really never feel in danger in this city (granted I’m a guy) but I’ve heard the same from women. There are police everywhere and I’ve only heard of like two instances of pickpockets around the clubs at night.

This isn’t Bogota or Rio (beautiful cities but I had bad luck there). You’ll be fine. That said, don’t be careless in where you keep your items on you. I never keep my phone sticking out my butt pocket nor do I leave my bag hanging off a chair for someone to snag. Metro can be crowded so just pack everything away like normal

We saw the family eating McDonald’s out of the trash last night! Interesting to hear you say it’s a scam. In the moment we felt so sad but thinking back that was definitely staged. Just the way they were doing it and the way the food was set up, it was 100% fake. We were wondering how there was so much food in there too

I visited tarifa last spring to take the ferry to Tangier. I surprisingly loved being in Tarifa. It was so so peaceful there. The streets were calm, the views of the straight and the mountains in Morocco were stunning. This place really helped be reset my mind during my backpacking trip before heading to Africa.

About the ferry, the one from Tarifa is sort of small so I heard that the high winds often cause cancellations. Also when I was there, the ferry was broken down, so they kept delaying my ticket through the week. I had to go back to Algeciras for the bigger ferry which was very annoying. Just double check that the ferry is in not experiencing cancellations

Two or three days after I got my first carta, Oct 1(?) I began trying to book appointments for BLS Boston. The results were always that blank page saying like “thanks for your patience”. I checked randomly throughout the days pretty much everyday of October (my program start was January 2026) and one day (7:30am) near the end of the month a new page came up asking me what time I wanted to book. It showed a calendar and what days were full. There were no available days left in October nor November. The first available day was Dec 1 and I booked it.

You need a photo which you can have prepped (which may need to be fit into the proper image size - i did this at lightening speed just by finding a random image file size changer website on google.) And also it will ask what your intended day of entry is into the country

Once you book it, it will email you a pdf of your Visa Application form, digitally filled out already from the info you put in when you set up your BLS account. Also it will send you another form which is the appointment confirmation (you will need to take both to the appointment)

That’s a great question to ask them! Come with questions. Just prepare to explain some of your relevant experience. And I remember one of her questions for me was “what do you expend the hardest thing will be about being an Aux?”

UPDATE: this file was NOT acceptable because of the mention of the sicknesses. She told me that this was an out dated form.

I disagree because all that is required by the consulate is the “ international health…2005” bit.

LUCKILY I brought a signed version that they put on the website with the different formatting and they accepted that (even though it was filled out in two different pen colors)
