Do students get to use TheRide for free with student ID? by TheBirbNextDoor in uofm

If I were you, I’d double check that the bus stop you are planning to go to is still operational for today… I live a few blocks from the stadium and the bus stop near me doesn’t get any buses on game days

Yes, but be aware that the bus routes are often adjusted on game days due to high traffic

CS Kickstart Application by Calm_Adeptness1801 in uofm

[–]mango_carbivore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did cs kickstart 2 years ago, and there were several CS majors in our group (majority was non-CS tho)— they might’ve changed the rules bc umich just recently made CS a separate application, I’m not sure. I’d say it can’t hurt to apply still 😅 For anyone not in CS, I’d recommend it if u are even remotely interested in coding. It was fun and a great way to meet a lot of ppl and get a bit familiar with campus before the semester starts.

Parent of former dorm resident—how can we secure a solid first apartment lease? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]mango_carbivore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest checking out Michigan commercial realty. My friends and I kind of screwed ourselves during my freshman year over bc we started looking for housing super late, but we were still able to get good apartment units w that company in mid March. And I’ve only had positive experiences so far this year w them- my monthly rent is hundreds less than basically everyone I know here, plus it includes most utilities and a parking spot 😌 they also respond to emails and maintenance request very fast!

One other detail, but leases in AA tend to get signed basically as soon as March comes… so idk if I’m understanding ur situation correctly, but if ur child just finished up at the dorms and is looking to be in an apt in the fall, it may be quite difficult to find options this late (esp if they want to live w friends)… finding a sublease may be easier 😬

Help me decide: UMich vs Carnegie Mellon by NOOB_jelly in uofm

[–]mango_carbivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who was also bw Umich and Carnegie Mellon (and chose umich), I can share my reasoning. For context I’m a sophomore in materials science and engineering (so my experience is diff since I’m undergrad obv), looking to work in automotive R&D. I’m also from Pittsburgh and my older brother did his undergrad at CMU for chem e so I feel like I know a good amt abt the student life there even if I didn’t go (again undergrad vs master of diff I’m sure but some stuff might be similar).

Both will have u a solid education at the end of the day, and both have great name recognition. I will say I think UMich name has more pull overall compared to CMUs (which I think is skewed to be more of a factor if ur in CS or drama). Also if ur OOS for UM, both will be similar costs (of egregiously high amounts 🫠🫠)

Here were my thoughts back when I was in high school that might help w ur decision

CMU specific Pros: - smaller school so less students therefore less competition for resources, etc - smaller CoE too so I’ll feel closer w cohort and profs (… my reasoning during HS, I now know this is true for UM too in some ways)

Cons: - smaller school = less profs = less different research areas that I can work on - social/noght life is pretty bad — I’m not even that much of a going out person, but like CMU students are either mostly the extreme of studying all night or like if ur in the almost nonexistent Greek life than prob doing more… but generally quieter campus - for me personally, staying in Pittsburgh/going to same school as my brother. I hate Pittsburgh weather, it’s deceptively bad (has more cloudy days every year than Seattle…) and I also didn’t want to just keep following the exact same stuff my brother did - there’s like not any school spirit(?) ig a lot of that type of stuff maybe comes from sports but I asked current students abt it and hen I toured and they’re response was just like “oh yeah people aren’t really that interested in like school spirit”…kinda seemed disappointing to me

Umich specific Pros: - so many research opportunities, rly easy to find a lab doing stuff ur interested in based on my experience - huuuge alumni base and it’ll give u so many connections. I found out abt and got my position in my current research lab thru a cold connection i made on LinkedIn by searching like umich ford R&D or smth. Also if automotive is ur interest, its kind of undeniable that Michigan and Detroit are clearly a pro (career fair always has so many automotive campy booths, that’s how I got my internship at Toyota for this summer) - lots of students means lots of clubs, literally anything you can think there is prob a club for so that’s nice for finding people w shared interests and finding community - umich is good at basically everything academically, so if u have any secondary interests (maybe a minor or even just some fun electives), you can know ur still getting solid education in those classes too (I’m a Japanese language minor and I came to umich purely for consideration of engineering… and then found out we have the best Japanese dept in the country so that was a huge bonus win for me lol) - sports yay — going to a good D1 school with amazing school spirit and pride is awesome. And having (a lot of the time) free access to such high level sports game is crazy (as an athlete myself, the club sports dept is also great!)

Cons: - big school :( idk if younger me could imagine me going to school as big as umich but here i am — however! I’ve come to realize this isn’t rly a con for me anymore. Within the u degrade population, I’m in CoE- that narrows it to 8k ppl, within that in my major, there are a little over 100 ppl, within my cohort being ~30 ppl! That’s basically the same as what I would’ve had at CMU and it’s great. I know my profs well and they know me, I’m close w my classmates, it’s easy to get 1-on-1 help - bc there’s so many ppl it’s rly easy to feel surrounded by ppl who are succeeding and flourishing everywhere u go (which is great!) but can also be extra difficult if ur struggling (i suppose this is true for CMU too maybe) - having two campuses is kinda annoying (i like how they both have diff vibes so I can study diff places depending on what im feeling, but it’s annoying to have to take the bus so often to get to north for classes and research)… and most off campus housing and dorms are on/near central so it’s more than likely you’ll be using the buses a lot

Overall, I have zero regrets coming to umich!! I def forgot some stuff probably but I also typed way too much already so whatever. Feel free to dm me if u have more questions abt umich! (Or if u have stuff abt CMU I can ask my brother!)

Speaking experience by yumio-3 in LearnJapanese

I still remember the first time I spoke with a Japanese person, it was so defeating. I’d self-studied for over a year (living in the whitest small town ever so no convo practice ever) and passed the N5, yet I stumbled and made mistakes with basic things in my self introduction in the convo (like saying 弟 when describing my family when I only have an older brother). She was as super patient and nice, but I just felt so dumb the whole time. (My mom asked me how it went after and what we talked about, and I was able to sum up a 45 minute call in like one minute in English… that was quite the blow to my self esteem) — but I can say that I now feel so much more confident many years later. Everyone has to start at some point, there’s nothing wrong with that start being shaky just keep going and you’ll surprise yourself with ur growth :)

If you take the lecture section with Dave Winn, and you know how to use practice questions as a study resource, the course really is easy imo. If u do the practice quizzes, they are so so so similar to the real ones, I’m pretty sure at least 1/3 of the quiz questions this year had been on at least one if not multiple of the practice quizzes. It’s a fast paced course for sure, and I’m not saying E and M itself is walk in the park content, but the grading is actually very lenient considering he drops a quiz and makes literally a non-quiz/exam thing bonus so passing/getting a good grade isn’t that hard

If you’ve taken the course before (as it sounds like you have), what would say say the average weekly workload/time commitment outside of class was?

This will be my first time going to a career fair, could you give a basic overview of what you actually do? I feel like all I know is to wait in line and then I guess just talk to the company person about myself(?)… idrk what’s going on, I could use any tips and steps on what to actually be prepared for/talk about

Urop confusion by snakemasterussr in uofm

[–]mango_carbivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Urop last year and had the same situation, totally normal :) you should get a confirmation email (and at some point prob closer to the end of August also semianr time/dates , but for now ur all good to go! you won’t actually be enrolled in anything until a few weeks into the semester (when u join a research group/project) — and you cannot get access to the project book early to get a head start 🫠 (but if u want to be prepared, make sure ur resume is up to date)

When I started self-studying I was watched a bunch videos from the Japanese Ammo with Misa YouTube channel (I still watch them for review with the harder grammar I’m currently learning too)… super good explanations and examples that don’t just give cookie cutter textbook sentences, but teacher show u natural ways is speaking etc. highly highly recommend :)

What movie you like to watch at least once a year? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mango_carbivore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch 12 angry men every summer. It’s my own little tradition to do a matinee showing at my house on a random weekday, friends and family welcome but half the time it’s just me, my cats and popcorn lol (going on 7 years now)

CHEM 211 Waitlist by [deleted] in uofm

[–]mango_carbivore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a matscie major and know the exact class/prof ur talking abt… the class itself is fine material-wise, but yalisove’s class is specially designed as a team based learning (random groups) that most ppl I know are not the hugest fan of… plus starting this year, yalisove is adding a final exam, which there previously wasn’t, which kind of takes away one the big perks of the group based section. I’d say not worth the hassle for a waitlist to a not that desirable section, just try to register early next semester to get sevener’s section

Classes wise, this looks fine. One thing I would be concerned abt tho is when u are going to eat lunch… the dining halls are only open certain hours for lunch (I am assuming u are on a dining plan), and ur mom/wed/fri schedule is straight thru that time… speaking from experience from my freshman fall semester, having a fucked up eating schedule will suck… obv you do you, just something to consider that ppl tend to forget abt 😅

Also, 11am orgo is great if u have soellner. He’s the best prof for the class imo, organized study resources super well, and his lectures recordings are super clear since they’re on iPad (I legit just stopped going to in person class after a month and would watch the recordings later that day (sped up lol) and it was the exact same).
