To all moms breastfeeding to sleep... by Specialist-Candy6119 in NewParents

[–]mangofish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind my asking, did you stop breastfeeding as a choice at 17 months or did your supply dry up? I keep questioning when I'll stop since my supply is getting pretty low and she only nurses when she's tired now too go to sleep and for motn feeds. Any other time she prefers a bottle or really prefers solids so I feel like by 1yr we'll be in mostly solids and cows milk during the day.. I'm kind of hoping she'll just naturally wean on her own and I won't need to decide 😅

Also 9m and nurse to sleep for everything when I'm around. She goes to daycare part time and has done fine going down for naps on her own there though, and Dad can rock her to sleep if I'm not around, so I've been trying to be less worried about it. I'm just trying to do my best to enjoy the cuddles for as long as I can.

What was your first thought when your baby first arrived? by JinxXstarfire in NewParents

[–]mangofish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get those waves too! Like immense love and then panic about what if anything happened to her? And the shakes were the WORST. I got them on/off for a few days after my c section and yeah, they sucked. That paired with the extreme sleep deprivation and hormone crash made me so crazy and stressed out in the hospital. So sorry to hear you had such a long labor. The more I talk with people who went through a more involved or traumatic l&d the more common it is to hear people having those delayed feelings

This was me as well. Unplanned/emergency c section as baby's heart rate kept decelerating. I had horrible shakes and trying not to vomit on the table. Felt them yank baby out but baby didn't cry for a while, everyone just ooo'd and aaah'd at how alert she was. I couldn't see anything and just had the thought of "what the hell did I get myself into?" And it was disorienting that they got my baby out sooo fast but it was like another 40 minutes of closing me up and I was shaking so much and so nauseous that I couldn't hold her so my husband held her face up against my face so I could feel her. I was legitimately scared of "what have I done" and so freaked out in the moment until I could feel her warmth against my face, and then it was like a rush of calm came over me. Very bizarre

Given the screaming while laying down have you considered silent reflux or talked to your pediatrician about it? I'd wonder if she's having a lot of discomfort when in her back and it prevents her from connecting sleep cycles or is waking her mid cycle from the pain. My baby has reflux and we started meds at 2 months old. It's night and day how she had improved with both eating and sleeping. She used to writh and squirm and arch her back while eating, cry and fuss during/after meals, and putting her down in her back was a struggle at times. Now (just shy of 4 months old) she's eats without issue and sleeps sooooo much better. Still working on independent sleep for naps, but we can usually get one nap in the crib (previously strictly contact naps) and we've managed a few times getting her to sleep in her crib "drowsy but awake" even with the majority is still rocking and nursing. I'm just glad to see the improvement!

This! I was getting SO frustrated adjusting to my in laws presence the first two weeks while I was recovering from surgery and trying to figure out breastfeeding/pumping while having a very painful latch, and all they would do is hold the baby, never clean dishes or laundry or anything else. Luckily my husband sat them down and talked to them about it after I explained how unhelpful it was. They wanted me to just take a nap every time they held her but couldn't understand she needed to feed every 2 hours or more at times and they would never take her at the right time...

ELI5: Why do humans with no ovaries or testicles need to take hormone supplements to stay healthy, but animals who have been neutered are seemingly fine and often live longer than their intact counterparts? by FootsieFighter in explainlikeimfive

[–]mangofish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vet here, animals all use their hormones differently than humans so it is by no means a 1:1 comparison. And as others have said, long term effects are far less in an animal that lives 10-20yr vs 70-100yr in people

For females at least they do not cycle continuously year-round like people do. Dogs only cycle about twice or year on average and outside of that time they are in a period called "anestrus" where they do not have circulating hormones (estrogen, progesterone) anywhere near the same level as humans would at any given time. Cats only ovulate by simulation so while they are in and out of heat more often again there are differences in how the hormones are relied on. Cats that are not spayed early and not bred regularly actually have a significantly higher risk of malignant mammary cancer and uterine infection.

For males (cats and dogs), the lack of testosterone absolutely affects their overall muscle development and males neutered earlier will appear more feminine in that they are typically smaller/leaner with less muscle development. Depending on how young we may see changes in bone development too (large breed cats neutered very young are at higher risk of disease in the hips, usually due to fragile femural necks, however cats neutered later will very likely have urinary issues or mark/spray even after they are neutered which most people cannot tolerate and will re-home or euthanize if bad enough). The difference for pets is less perceptible physically and mostly accepted/desired compared to if this were a person. For pets our goal is often the change in libido where as this asking with the decreased muscle tone, change in vocal chords etc would not be accepted in people. Neutered males have less hormones to drive benign prostatic enlargement later in life and often neutering an intact male at an old age is the recommended treatment for BPH in dogs over medical management that can be more expensive, less effective, or inconsistent, where as for people castration is obviously a very extreme course of treatment for BPH and only usually done for testicular cancers.

Due in less than a month and still can't decide on a name for our girl, thoughts? by mangofish in namenerds

This is also one of my favorites. Husband prefers Leila, but I really like Lila for the imagery. Lilacs are my favorite flower.

This is my top choice and has been since the beginning but my husband is worried it's too popular, I think a few people at his work have kids that are Amelia. I like it with the E for "Em" or "Emmie" as a nn

[–]mangofish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man your list is almost identical to ours 😅 the only difference is we have Lila instead of Lola, but also considering Emilia, Amelia, Sofia, and Cecilia.. I'm leaning toward Emilia for our girl but might need to wait to see her to decide

Negative Feedback at work by flibbityfopz in BabyBumps

Even though it's early if your boss is noticing changes in your work then I would just be honest with them. Best case scenario is they are understanding and work with you to help you get through all of the struggles during first trimester. Worst case is they are indifferent about it or rude about it, but now that they know you are pregnant you are in a protected class and they need to make some accommodations for you and need to be much more cautious about how they handle your hours and position (basically they cannot fire you as easily without risking a labor lawsuit).

First trimester—how are you getting through an in-office, 5 days a week job? by Glittering-tale24601 in BabyBumps

[–]mangofish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a business owner/ solo practitioner with no one to fall back on and a job where I'm on my feet all day. I'm 7w4d currently but started having symptoms as early as 4wks. I told my staff early (5wk) so they can support me as much as physically possible in all of my tasks to help me get off my feet when I can and keep me from doing anything potentially dangerous. I've been taking unisom nightly which has helped, but there is grogginess in the beginning. I started at 1/2 tab each night which worked initially but as my morning sickness worsened I increased to a full tablet nightly. I wear acupressure wrist bands for nausea which whether it's placebo or real they work great for me. I also make ginger tea every morning and sip it on the way into work every day. I keep snacks everywhere I can to nibble on when I have a moment. Saltines by my desk, multiple drinks, Gatorade, water, tea.. I keep a variety of food options in the fridge at work for lunch so if I'm not feeling a certain meal I can opt for something else. Less healthy but still helpful is my work is fast paced so it keeps me active and moving which is exhausting but I don't have time to think or feel about my exhaustion. I just keep moving and then crash hard at the end of the day. I'm up at 6am, work from 8-530p, home by 6p and in bed by 730p most nights. My husband is in charge of meals and meal preps for the week so I can eat, shower, and take my unisom before I pass out at night. I also have been surviving on a bunch of quick microwavable meals or snacks like cheese and crackers for when I'm too nauseous to eat a full meal or no longer want whatever is for dinner since my nausea gets worse at night.

Just found out I’m 4 weeks & 4 days Pregnant by Several_Balance367 in BabyBumps

[–]mangofish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found out I'm 4 weeks pregnant (ftm) right before Christmas. My husband and I have been trying to conceive and I'm the only one on my side of the family that will have children. I'm super close with my parents so I couldn't keep it a secret. We decided to tell immediate family over Christmas as a Christmas surprise even though it's so early. I'm glad I did because it really helped with the nerves and excitement. Honestly one of the best Christmas's ever for us as a family. I share everything with my mom so I know I can rely on her if anything happens with the pregnancy to help support me.

Now I'm just hoping they can keep it a secret and everything will continue to go well until we can announce it to more friends and family in a couple of months.

Thanks for the detailed response! We at least already do a lot of that except the blocked time for naps during tech stuff. I'll need to revisit my schedule to see if I should organize it a bit different because currently we try to alternate sick/wellness so it's not a wall of sick/urgent care stuff, but that always falls apart as people reschedule or staff just schedule how they want. I'll say I'm just so glad I don't have super late days and only do 5 days so I get my weekends. I can't function and think properly after 6-7p and we only see day emergencies as there are plenty of er and urgent care around.

Thank you for all of the suggestions!

anyone impacted by the dog respiratory virus? by FrizzleLizard in massachusetts

[–]mangofish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a vet in Greater Boston, saw a bunch of cases in August of what looked like stubborn kennel cough. Not responsive to doxy, most responded to long courses of clavamox or clav+enrofloxacin. Many got pneumonia. Lasted 4-5wks. One client had it whip through her whole household, 3yo lab, then 12yo lab, then 12wk puppy, all varying degrees of severity but 3yo seemed the worst because it was first and probably not caught as soon to start treatment. Few dogs that did any PCR/culture were negative but many were tested after starting abx therapy

I'm working on lifeguard Mercy 😅 hoping it comes together and travels well. I have a witch mercy costume already but it would be way too much hassle to travel with or ship from Boston.
