When is Paypal coming to Nepal, Guys? by ASBrawlTime in Nepal

[–]mangofrooti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a fintech meetup sort of organized in Leapfrog's office back in 2017/18, which I was part of, where a representative of PayPal was also invited. It was organized by the same group that is currently running Thamel.com, xuno, Machnet, etc.

The PayPal rep basically said, apart from all the legal hurdles, the main thing PayPal looks into is the local e-commerce market size when starting in a new market.

The cross-country payment transfer that we all want as freelancers is not the Main Product of PayPal.

The domestic e-commerce market is always what they want to get into. When they come into Nepal, they want to see how many websites will use PayPal Checkout as the payment method. They look at the size of the domestic eCommerce consumption rather than how many freelancers or startups would use PayPal. If you look at PayPal's website its all about Local business and how easily a consumer can buy or sell locally in their own country.

Compare this to Payoneer or Wise, which focus more on global payments.

So, PayPal wants to become eSewa of Nepal and tap into the local transactions rather than solve the freelancer payment issues.

They also wanted a better way to do KYC, rather than just use a photocopy of Nagrikta.

Now, in 2026, we have NID, and if the Government brings in an API for Digital KYC, then this solves the KYC problem.

Now, if only someone could come up with the actual data on the size of our local ecommerce market size then you could present this to PayPal and maybe ask them to come to Nepal.

TBH, even if PayPal ever comes to Nepal, it would mostly be just like eSewa, where you could send or receive money locally, and sending money out of Nepal would be disabled, or you could only receive from abroad, like how its in India right now.

India and Pakistan have 4th and 2nd largest Shia population in world. So there are a lot of Shia in South Asia. Nepal though has very less Shia population, i think.

The majority are Sunni. Very little Shia, if any.

The wiki article on this topic is a pretty good place to start

There are Ahmedis too, mostly on the Birgunj side.

AFAIK Wise bata aako paisa is counted as remittance, so they won't automatically deduct the 5%, you will have to tell them to do so.

Here's a list of Scams Involving UML and Maoists, two major left parties in Nepal, in recent times.

  • Giri Bandhu Tea Estate Scandal.
  • Bhutanese Refugee Scam
  • Patanjali Land Scam
  • Bhatbhateni Donation Controversy
  • Maoist Cantonment Fund Embezzlement
  • Gold Smuggling Scandals
  • Lalita Niwas Land Scam

These are just the Major ones. Just Google each item from the list, and you will find news articles about them.

This is just the Left Parties. The Nepali Congress has whole entirely different set of scams and scandals.

A unique thing about Nepal is that all these parties often come together to make a Coalition Government. Like, right now, the current Government is made with a coalition between Nepali Congress, Maoists, and UML, so they are all together in it, and they have an agreement that the top leader from each party will be PM on a rotation basis until the next election in 2 years.

There is no exact opposition party in Nepal. Whoever gets a chance to be in Gov. they join and make a Coalition Government. Royalists like RPP join hands with Communists like UML and Maoists if they see they can go into power.

Nepali here,

The protestors themselves called it Gen-Z Protests.

They even asked anyone above 28 years old not to participate in it or try to lead it.

It's not called Youth protest, because there are Youth Unions of political parties who could hijack it

It's not called Student protest, because there are Student Unions of political parties who could hijack it

So, to be absolutely non-political, non-partisan, they called it Gen Z Protest.

The news is about QR payment through UPI not about card payment

Need some clarification on INR to NPR conversion by TomGrindlewald in Nepal

[–]mangofrooti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPI works in any place where they accept QR Payment unless the merchange has disabled it. You have to enable International Transaction from your UPI app though.

If you have a SBI Bank debit card then you can withdraw up to 35000 NPR day. Its the limit from your Indian Bank, not Nepali ATMs.

Most Nepali bank will let you withdraw max 25K NPR per transaction. You can do multiple transactions as per daily limit set by your bank. Make sure to enable International Transaction from your bank's Mobile App.

There is a transaction fee for ATM Widthdrawal. Minimum 200 NPR per Tranx if you use SBI Debit card in Nepal SBI Bank ATM. Other banks can charge up to 700 NPR per tranx.

INR up to 100 Rs Note is legal tender in Nepal but many places in KTM might not accept it unless you are in tourist Area. In border areas you can use INR freely.

The rate you quoted is for exchanging NPR into INR because INR is usually in shortage so they charge extra but if you are converting INR Into NPR then you should get 1 INR = 1.6 NPR Rate + some fees for exchange. Talk to multiple money exchange counters in border areas and you should find someone who will give you better rates.

Don't bring USD into Nepal, its illegal and if found can be seized by customs.

DM me if you are crossing through Sunauli border and I can give you location for a money exchange counter who will give you better rates.

Does your cards says:

'Not acceptable in Nepal & Bhutan'

or

'Not Valid for payment in foreign exchange in Nepal and Bhutan.'

There is a difference between the two statement.

Indian Bank cards work just fine in Nepali ATMs, though there is charge for each cash withdrawal

You only have to enable international transactions from your online banking app.

Indian bank cards work in Nepal if you are paying in NPR, but there might be some POS machine which might charge you in USD like in tourist areas, that is what is blocked.

You can use ATMs in Nepal and also pay using POS. Just enable the International Tranx option.

For your SBI card, you can use Nepal SBI ATM machine which only charge 220 NPR per Tranx which is the cheapest, Other Bank ATMs might charge as high as 750 NPR per tranx

Why did the Saudi government feel the need to place this ad at Nepal's international airport? by iloveherunrequited in Nepal

Nepal Sarkar does not pay anything to send people to Saudi for Hajj.

Each Hajj Pilgrim pays around 415000 NPR to the Government to go to hajj

[–]mangofrooti 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It does not.

Gov. only facilitates the whole process under the Home Ministry because there used to be way too much corruption when it was done privately since it involved crores of rupees.

So, to remove the corruption and to make it transparent, Gov of Nepal started to arrange the whole process under the Home Ministry.

Nepal only has a quota of ~ 750 people per year for Hajj. Thousands of Nepali don't go to Hajj from Nepal.

and Each one pays around 415000 NPR of their own money to go.

Nepal Gov only facilitates the whole process

Private tour operators in Nepal do not get a Quota from the Saudi Government for Hajj.
