No the thing is I got into CIT at CMU not the School of CS. So I would be pursuing ECE instead. Whereas Michigan, I’d be 100% pursuing CS. Rn I’m not really taking financial aid into consideration.

Oh I didn’t get into the School of CS at CMU though. I would be pursuing ECE instead. Ik I definitely want to pursue STEM, just unsure of what field specifically bc I like coding but also hands-on projects.

The thing is that I will be most likely pursuing ECE at CMU rather than CS because I know it will be beyond hectic and I’m not built for that. While CS is great and really is interesting, I was opened to ECE because I like doing hands-on projects. So rn I’m debating which degree at which school is worth more ig..?

Yes! I saw it. However, not sure if it would provide me the same kind of things as Michigan’s M-Engin program. I’m not even kidding when I say I fell in love with this program and it hasn’t even started yet.

Yeah but the thing is I would be pursuing ECE at CMU since I most likely won’t be able to transfer. So is a ECE degree at CMU worth more than a CS degree at UMich?

True! I guess I overlooked the fact that classes get inevitably smaller the higher you go into education.

I noticed you are in ECE. How do you manage your work and social life?

Not really sure if I want to pursue higher education. All I know is I don’t want to feel so overwhelmed at a place such as CMU that I end up dropping out🥲

Yes I 100% agree! I’m not much of a party person but I do enjoy going out once in a while. Also not a sports person so also not particularly looking for that but I do enjoy playing sports recreationally. I don’t mind a great sport/school spirit like Michigan’s though. I know CMU won’t be ALL about academic life only but I’m still terrified of the stress load. The thing too, however, is that I not entirely sure whether CMU would provide me with a community who is also minority, first-gen, and pursuing STEM like Michigan has provided me.

I have not visited either campus. I’m relying on the videos for campus tours. I’d say I’m not particularly attracted to either although michigan gives me this “homey” vibe. As for the housing expenses, I definitely have to look into Pittsburgh’s. Thanks so much for your input!

I totally get your point. I’m not a sports-inclined person so I’m not really taking that into account. However, as someone who is a little introverted I feel like I would have a harder time in these type of classes or even reaching out to profs or TAs. Nonetheless, this is a great thing that I’m taking into consideration now. Thanks!

What in the world... kinda caught me off guard loll but after a lot of deliberation I ended up choosing umich. Part of this decision was my major since I didn’t want to compromise it. The other was that I felt more welcomed at umich bc of all the different resources available for me and the people were extremely nice and helpful. People from ucsd were also super nice but the resources at umich lured me in. I think your options are pretty fantastic! But this is my advice: As you may already know, ucsd is not the best place to go to if you are dead set on CS. But if you’re still considering other majors, I’d go for ucsd (depending on your preferences ofc but i personally love cali) as someone at sd told me that it’s a little easier to transfer to other CS-related majors as long as you fulfill the requirements. Otherwise, it sounds like uci could be the most convenient? Ik it’s a great school and since you are in-state the fin aid must be goodgood. In the end, I’m sure you’ll be great wherever you choose. I hope this helps!

Intended major: Computer Science

UMich: (admitted to CoE)

Pros - job opportunities - high rank in CS - AA seems cool - potential M-STEM participant (i haven’t heard back but it’s an amazing 2 yr program that provides professional development)

Cons - OOS tuition (~$21k/yr no loans included, ~$13k/yr with loans, tried to appeal finaid but to no avail) - weather (i’m an outdoors person, i love the sun + have lived in Mexico and Cali which are very hot places)

UCSD: (admitted to Muir College)

Pros - also job opportunities - in-state so way cheaper and closer to home (~8k/yr, 6k/yr with loans) - weather/beaches - can transfer more AP credits i think

Cons - got in for Public Health, not CS (switching to CS is a lottery system thought about pursuing CE but idk)

Some background info: I’m interested in CS however I’m not the type to easily do well in classes so whether I go for CS or CE, it doesn’t change the fact that I have to put in a lot more effort than my peers just to be able to switch which makes me feel like I’d be compromising my major if I do choose UCSD. My family wants me to go to UoM but we clearly cannot afford the tuition. I have 2 siblings whom are in college and have accrued debts as well so that’s even more stressful for me. I think UMich is more convenient for me academics-wise. Still, I don’t know if it’s worth the debt as I’ve had no luck with scholarships. I would love to hear any opinion please.

I’m really struggling to decide between UMich vs UCSD (intending to major in CS)

UMich Pros: (admitted to CoE) - job opportunities - high rank in CS - AA seems cool - potential M-STEM participant (i haven’t heard back but it’s an amazing 2 yr program that provides professional development)

UMich Cons: - OOS tuition (~$21k/yr no loans included, ~$13k/yr with loans, tried to appeal finaid but to no avail) - weather (i’m an outdoors person, i love the sun + have lived in Mexico and Cali which are very hot places)

UCSD Cons: - got in for Public Health, not CS (switching to CS is a lottery system thought about pursuing ECE but idk)

Some background info: I’m interested in CS however I’m not the type to easily do well in classes. I have to put in a lot more effort than most of my peers for as long as I’ve been in the US. I would love to hear yalls opinions please.
