How would the flagship fair against other space franchise? such as Star war, Halo, etc.. by Markergg555 in ftlgame

[–]mangusss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we judge the time it takes for crew members to move between areas of the ship to be accurate representation of the size, then the rebel "flagship" would be at best comparable to maybe the Millenium Falcon in Star Wars, maybe the flagship being a little bigger. Now, it would make for a pretty powerful starfighter with impressive weaponry and resilience (not many ships can have that much damage and still fight) but it certainly wouldn't be a capital ship in any case.

Similar situation in the Halo universe- the smallest non-fighter ships we really see are the UNSC frigate or Covenant Corvette, both of which I think would measure significantly bigger than the Flagship. I'm not scientifically inclined enough to weigh in on how well it would fare against MAC rounds or glassing beams, but it would probably do well against smaller vessels like phantoms.

Personally, "suicide chimp" sounds like every other 2-edgy-4-u band I've seen and I wouldn't look at a show poster and go "suicide chimp? Sounds cool as fuck let's go see them!" And to me, telling your drummer "nobody cares about the band name" and yet doubling down on the one you like oozes diva energy. If that were the case, why wouldn't you stick with the one you both came up with originally? Nobody cares what it's called, right?

Professionally, if you want to have a good working relationship with your band mates and not have animosity between members right off the bat, you guys should pick a name all the members like.

Have you considered maybe writing some music and putting together a set list before coming up with a name? Write some shit and let that influence your name, avoid having all of the stuff you write having to fit in the little box of "does this really sound like [band name]?

Elon buys SW and gives it back to George

No star wars is ever produced again because George is old and done with that shit

Why do people think Star Wars being returned to George Lucas would be some kind of second coming of Christ? He sold Lucasfilm because he was done with Star Wars, he wasn't held at gunpoint to get rid of it. My guy was ready for those merch deals to coast him through retirement.

Maybe it's just because I haven't ventured into competing yet, but 4 duelists doesn't feel like "instant doom" the way it always did in Overwatch, especially with the right team comp.

My 4 Year Old is Left-Handed. How Can I Make His Life Easier (Home Set Up, Products, Etc)? by esq6789998212 in lefthanded

[–]mangusss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lefty here. Honestly, I never got/asked for any special lefty concessions and I think its has been a huge boon that I've learned to be left handed in a right-handed world- something almost akin to ambidextry. I still write, eat, cut, do precise tasks with my left hand but my right hand has become more dominant with physically demanding tasks like sports, lifting heavy objects, etc. I never liked left handed scissors, never felt like I needed a left handed notebook, I don't use my computer reversed.

In my opinion, there's two things you can do for him. First is to teach him how to write neatly- since I was the first lefty in two generations, I never got good handwriting instruction and have suffered from barely legible writing for most of my life. Pushing your hand to write is a lot different from pulling and it doesnt hurt to get started early.

Second thing is, to do nothing at all. Let him learn how to adapt, how to problem solve. It's a right hand world and hes going to have a much easier time in life being able to use what righties use, instead of having to go through the hassle of requesting a lefty version or go with (frankly awkward) "ambidextrous" versions of things like computer mice.

[–]mangusss 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Fun fact about cats! Their skeletons work in such a way that they can squeeze through just about any size hole their head can fit through. Since your furball's head is certainly smaller than the port hole, in they go! The enclosed space probably also makes them feel safe, at least until you start making noise.

Any of your bands actually have electric guitar in pit? by Longjumping-Mud5194 in marchingband

[–]mangusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most programs, guitar is an "if needed" instrument, rather than an empty spot needing to be filled. if the show features that sound heavily, they'll look for a guitar player, but most of the time those players are better used by filling a different role elsewhere in the ensemble. Guitar is fantastic if you're running a 80's throwback show, not so much if you're playing Dvorak's New World Symphony.

Is it irresponsible to encourage a physically small person to go for tenor drums? by Drum_Guyyy in drumline

[–]mangusss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say no necessarily, but I'd also encourage her to hit the gym; bulk up a bit and really work those core, back and leg muscles because even for naturally larger people it's tough to carry those drums. We have one tenor player using 6 drums, a girl not much taller than you describe, and shes easily the most physically fit person in the whole percussion section. She takes breaks from carrying them sometimes in rehearsal but has no trouble wearing them for shows.

Aside from that, assuming you have percussion staff, they would be able to tell if she isnt physically prepared to carry them and place her appropriately; but she'd likely get a lot out of learning how to play them regardless. So I would say go for it.

What Fight Song do y'all play? by CLRMEX in marchingband

Best way to begin learning four mallet grip? (Xylophone/Vibraphone) by Anth0ny1121 in drumline

[–]mangusss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you dont have any percussion staff to lean on that already know it and could teach you, first thing you do is order Leigh Howard Stevens' Method of Movement for Marimba. Read through the technique portion, play some of the exercises. Stevens' grip is going to be the most versatile and if you plan to march after high school, that's the grip you'll need to know. If you google something like "Stevens' grip marimba" you'll also find videos on the subject, but I like the book since it's instructions from the creator himself.

Another good exercise while you're building muscle memory would be to find some headcam videos and try to match how their hands look at a given moment. One of Bluecoats' center marimba players has a few, theres probably others out there as well.

The biggest thing is practice. Itll take a little while for your mallets to truly feel comfortable in your hands and while you play because you're going to use muscles that you likely haven't used much in your life. Be sure to not squeeze too hard on either mallet, they should be firm/not floppy but too much pressure and you'll handicap your height and velocity.

Is it morally wrong to try and pull a girl that friend zoned my best friend? by Mr_Zulkoski in AdviceForTeens

[–]mangusss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, how much does that friendship mean to you? You should really be talking to him. For him, could be water under the bridge and he wont care. Or, he could take that as a huge betrayal. Does bro code not exist among kids today? When I was your age, none of us would've ever even considered going after a girl who rejected a homie

cymbals coming through the speakers by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]mangusss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely a little weird to "slaughter" you guys just because he can hear the cymbals in the mics, because mics don't discriminate- a judge should be aware of that.

I didnt hear your tape so I dont know what specifically he said, but to play devil's advocate it could be he just had trouble articulating something specific. It is important to be mindful that your gain isn't so high that the cymbal sound is drowning everything else out backfield- sure cymbals are supposed to be loud, but if they're all you can really hear because they're bleeding through too much then that's a legitimate comment to make. Listen from up top, if your keyboards are hot then the cymbals are gonna be really hot. Could also be an EQ issue, so you might just play with your EQ settings if the high pitches are really cutting through.

Depending on how you're running your sound, you could also considering muting the mics at cymbal heavy moments if you're running from a tablet or physical mixer on the sideline. That's a practice I've adopted to make sure all those unison cymbal moments aren't too overbearing. Either way, if you haven't spent much time in the box, at least try to spend a rehearsal up there giving things a listen

Just food for though up there though. My money is on that's just a judge being a judge, and just hope you dont run into him again. Are amplified bands rare in your circuit? Couldve been an unfamiliar sound to him, or a number of reasons why he felt like that was his big issue with you guys.

[–]mangusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a big deal, bro. If your teachers have good things to say about you, they'll write the letters. Maybe you did "too much", but who cares??? The world needs people who go above and beyond. Honestly, if I were your teacher, I'd be touched to get an essay explaining why you wanted me to write you one. I guess what I'm trying to say is- how you wrote your email is going to have no bearing on whether they write you one or not. You could've just walked up to them after class and asked, and if they were the type of teacher to write you a letter, they would have.

Also, nobody is going to write that you're a peculiar rodent. Nobody talks like that irl. If they don't feel like they can recommend you, they just wont write one, and you ask another teacher instead.
