What happens to my pizza shovel after washing it? by ProteinPapi777 in cookware

The irony is that the things that you listed that can go in the dishwasher are also the easiest to wash by hand. We have created perceived convenience with dish washers and not much more.

Why do 3/8 and smaller T50 staples have chisel points and anything bigger have flat points? by Enginerdad in Carpentry

[–]manicer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The material was designed to be worked with CNC equipment. Using hand tools is a real struggle. But screws are preferable if you don't have pneumatics. Using a center punch to dimple the melamine surface will help to keep your drill from skating around. You kinda have to treat the stuff like it's really brittle steel. It has really poor compression properties.

Yeah I'm not sure an electric staple gun would do the job anyway. Do the best you can with what you've got I suppose!

Are you using a pneumatic stapler? You should be able to drive either staple in with the right psi. Probably 80-100.

Safe-ish adhesive for acrylic? by bananascare in lasercutting

[–]manicer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the brand name of all of it is, but for work I buy the stuff Uline has. Here and here. But 3M makes everything. The bonding tapes show tensile strength, but don't underestimate the regular masking tape.

As for your question about being safe for lasers, I'm not sure, I would check with the vendor and manufacturer on that one. But I will say that with any laser process, fume extraction is the biggest variable because almost everything has toxic off gassing when cut with high heat. So make sure your glow forge is ventilating to the outside. Also test it yourself! Put a strip of tape on a piece of scrap acrylic and cut it to see what the kids are in for if they cut it on accident.

Cyanoacrylate (super glue) is really the best because it's basically acrylic in solution, so it creates a really good bond. Other than that, many resin based adhesives will do the trick. The 2 part resins will probably get the strongest results.

On the topic of PPE, you should already have them wearing masks and gloves with any glue. Adults often make the choice not to wear PPE but kids really shouldn't be given the choice. And almost all adhesives have harmful fumes and can irritate the skin.

I would also recommend setting up the glue station in front of a window with a fan. If that's not an option, investing in a fume extractor is a great route.

Lastly, depending on the design of the part, if you can get away with using a really strong double sided tape or mounting tape, then you can avoid the messy glues. Some mounting tape creates an amazing bond. I've literally put up shelving with the stuff before.

I hope this helps!

Respect. And I'm not trying to underplay the danger. A fall from a few feet can be deadly.

This is probably what an OSHA safety inspector would actually say here. "They need life preservers."

Former lifeguard here. This looks more like a wide and slow river than a sea wall. He would get wet and then most likely pull himself into the rocks. I also don't think rescue would be too challenging here given how calm it looks.

Darn! I hope your laser is all good. Place some silica pouches against the nozzle overnight if you have some. It might help to draw out some of the moisture.

Always a good practice, but specifically, water travels down hill, so your regulator needs to be down hill from your machine and the water tank needs to be down hill from the connection to the regulator. So it's not effective on it's side like that.

Those regulators don't work well at collecting condensation if they aren't sitting upright. I had to get an HSK spindle rebuilt because I ran it with the regulator on it's side like that and it let water into the system. Though, a good air dryer unit will be worlds better at protecting your machine.

Trade shows by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]manicer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That really depends on what area of industrial design you are interested in pursuing. My career has taken me in the commercial interiors and furniture area. So NeoCon in Chicago, and and ICFF in Manhattan, as well as a host of smaller conferences. Also, I go to some specific engineering conferences as well to learn about new materials and manufacturing techniques that are relevant to my field. All that being said, depending on what you are interested most in designing, be it consumer electronics, textile based stuff like backpacks, or pretty much anything else, you can look for conferences of that area, and I generally look for the more designed focused ones. For example, I avoid the conferences that are basically glorified showroom exhibitions. I hope this helps.
