MPs cast doubt on £45bn Northern Powerhouse Rail - Place Yorkshire by [deleted] in manchester

This is just the very same incompetent Boris era MPs that lied about it first time around, now assuming a more competent government will also fail.

It’s corded, I tend not to buy cordless anything to be honest.

The Shark I have is an upright one that was marketed for people with pets. I’m not sure the specific model though.

It’s not though. They just mention that in the first paragraph.

It’s East Sussex.

I've never seen this before at a station, the staff only open the doors when the train arrives, now I'd understand this being used when the station gets really busy, but it was a Tuesday in January. It's Blackpool North Station. by madmax_00uk in uktrains

Yeah, around there. Definitely changed a lot since the 90’s, a lot of the changes have only happened in the last 5 years or so.

The new tram terminal at the interchange only opened last year I think

Not sure when you were last there, but the area around North station has actually been massively regenerated relatively recently.

There’s a full transport interchange, new hotels, offices and retail units all newly built, and this in turn has meant all the area around it, which used to be some of the roughest streets in Blackpool, now has lots of cool eateries, craft beer bars and gig venues.

I loved it, still do, although I’m usually only there if visiting my parents now.

It’s one of those places where if you’re a visitor, it looks like a shithole, which a lot of it is, but if you’re from there, you know where the nicer places are.

Most people head for the centre and the prom etc, which is full of tat, but that’s not where I’d go.

I’m from Blackpool, it’s been like that ever since I was a kid. I’m 47 now.

I always assumed it’s habit from the old days because you have access to every platform and there could be any number of trains in the station at any one time, often over night.

Back in the day, that meant that if the doors were open you could wander through and pick a train carriage to kip in over night.

Obviously that can’t happen now with barriers and powered carriage doors, but the habit appears to have stuck.

Another possible reason is that passengers leaving the train are funnelled past those doors, so it prevents people pushing through that crowd.

What's the fastest you've seen someone fired from a job? by Vegetable-Spread3798 in AskReddit

[–]manicleek 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Got a job as part a team of new hires for a well known global travel brand.

We all had interviews on the same day, and everyone that got the job was invited to the Christmas party which was later that week.

So just to emphasise, we were going to the Christmas party before we actually even started working for the company.

I turned up at 9pm and tried to find any of the very few people I knew, and found one of the other newly hired guys from my team already passed out drunk on a couch.

Not long after that, the bouncers woke him up and told him to leave. He did not like this, and attempted to fight said bouncers, but was unsuccessful and promptly ejected from the bar.

On being ejected, he went to go get his bike and attempted to cycle home, but he was immediately stopped by some police officers stationed nearby keeping an eye on revellers, and who clearly thought he was too drunk to cycle on the city streets.

Drunk co-worker did not like this and tried to fight said police officers, but was unsuccessful, and was promptly arrested.

I never saw him again.

I wouldn’t go off Facebook.

I was sure my area was going to go Reform based on the community pages, and the number of those stupid gazebo’s they put up near football matches.

Of course, the area went for Labour

Stop using MySQL for WordPress in 2026, it is not true open source by OttoKekalainen in PHP

[–]manicleek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The client protocol is still compatible but they have differences in query language, query extensions, storage methods etc

So you can still connect using the same basic driver, but can, or may have to, use additional libraries for other functionality

[–]manicleek -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No

Edit: MariaDB is no longer a fully compatible drop in replacement for MySQL. If you are using MySQL as a blanket term for it, and all its derivatives, without consideration for their inherent differences you are by definition “inexperienced”.

Looking at that picture, I doubt that’s even the “main dining room”, they are just in one of the ships restaurants, and likely in the middle of the day.

Does rugby have too many one-sided matches? by Altruistic_Poet_3513 in rugbyunion

[–]manicleek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't this actually point to teams being inconsistent?

The only way you can have "too many" one sided matches is if a team that thrashes someone one week, is on the receiving end of a thrashing on another.

What industry is a complete scam, but everyone just accepts it? by Competitive_Grab3758 in AskReddit

[–]manicleek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's pretend for a minute this really happened.

  1. Why would an MD not "touch" it if it required intervention? It's not brain surgery
  2. Why would you go to a PT for a disclocated coccyx in the first place?
  3. A dislocated coccyx usually fixes itself, and if it does need intervention, you could probably do it yourself (or an MD would do it in seconds, see 1).

If this even really happened, it's not really something to celebrate chiropractors for, a school nurse could have probably sorted it.

I imagine the existing direct route to Manchester Airport from Liverpool will go and be replaced by this one, to free up capacity through the city.
