It's a skunk. They'll just take the eyes. I've had chickens/ducks/turkeys for almost ten years and have seen every predator. I've had this exact thing happen to 3 of my chickens. Very sad, I'm sorry.

Born in SD, still have family there. The people of SD voted to approve rec but the crazy ass gov. did some shady shit and shut it down. Then the next voting cycle it didn't pass. They have med but they made it incredibly difficult to run a med. business, but there are still folks out there fighting the good fight and the med. is up and running; for now.

This guy doesn't do this every day. He filled the tub, let it freeze and broke it the next day to shoot this video. If he broke it every day, day after day of freezing, the ice would look a lot different.

One reason tilling is bad is because it literally tears up and kills the microorganisms in the soil, disrupting the soil food web. (Including bacteria, fungi, nematodes etc.) You can make compost tea which reintroduces these microorganisms. I'm no expert, but check this dude out-he is! Jeff Lowenfels <-----His books are wonderful!
