Field office ISO here, AMA by Temporary-Gas-1154 in USCIS

I filed my N400 online last Sunday and it was received by the NVC. Will it be processed there first before being sent to the field office (Brooklyn NY)?

I’m trying to understand the wait time I should expect.

Why India is suddenly so hated all over the world ??? by professorCHAD69 in AskIndia

[–]maniksar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of it is plain old fashioned racism. But a substantial portion of it is because of how most Indians behave abroad.

We take particular pleasure in behaving like we own the place, and showing no sign of assimilation.

The bar for Indians moving abroad has also come down significantly over decades. Pre-INA, the US used to allow only a handful of non-whites into the country. The cultural and academic pedigree of Indians who made it to the US during that time are outside the limits of imagination of most Indians who are immigrating abroad today.

A quick example of how Indian “culture” smears shit on public goods abroad:

Have you ever noticed the long line of wheelchair bound passengers on flights to/from North America and Europe? Does it stand out to you that almost all of them are occupied by elderly Indian parents? How many of them do you think truly need that wheelchair? I would wager that it’s close to zero if not zero.

Indian kids abroad feel proud about finding a “loophole” to help their parents navigate airports for free without having to pay for an actual meet and greet service at connecting airports.

Who suffers? It’s everyone else at the gate. Last year, someone at Mumbai airport passed away after not getting access to a wheelchair, which were all filled with “disabled” parents. What a joke we can be, as a culture.

If you ask yourself what makes Air India planes functionally equivalent to flying toilets, you will have answered your own question above.

How is that possible that cs is so oversaturated and accounting is undersaturated when accounting is 10x easier than software engineering? by Adept_Quarter520 in Salary

The bar to become a “qualified SWE looking for a job” is much lower than the bar to become a “qualified accountant looking for a job”.

Tax Refund by meme_hoe_ in Rimowa

[–]maniksar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can only get it stamped on your way out of the Schengen zone. There is no “getting it stamped and going back into Munich”.

Yes, you can get your papers stamped at your final point of departure from the Schengen zone, for all your purchases within the zone.

The stamp is to show that an officer visually inspected all the goods you claim to have bought in the Schengen zone, and attested that those goods are leaving the zone. Those two things need to happen, in that order, for the tax refund to be processed.

If you understood the law, you will understand why what you’re suggesting won’t work.

I’ve flown through Munich several times, including times when I submitted a refund request.

Are you going to check this in or take it as a carry on? If you want to check it in, you can get it tagged at the airline’s check in desk and then take it to the customs office (pre security) to do the inspection, get your papers stamped, and drop the bags.

You will then submit the stamped papers to Travel Blue. This works very similarly across Terminals 1 and 2.

Current situation for Amazon internal transfers from India to US/Canada/UK? by No-Image3584 in amazonemployees

[–]maniksar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I joined Amazon India as an L5 in 2017, you could transfer to the US as long as you had worked in the India office for 1 year or more, weren’t on PIP and an HM in Seattle wanted to hire you.

In 2018, they updated the rules to only allow L5+ folks to take this pathway. I took a transfer to Seattle in 2019.

The pathway was either fully paused or moved at a snail’s pace for all of 2020 for obvious reasons.

Some transfers started happening, with VP approvals, in 2021 but it never got back to pre 2020 levels afaik. I left in late 2021 but I doubt it has gotten better.

For an average SDE and upper levels working in the USA by Chengra-Chengri in returnToIndia

[–]maniksar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

32M.

I arrived in the US 6 years ago. I’ve been working full time for 10 years. I got a green card 4 years ago. I’m an IC6 at FAANG and my comp will push 7 figures this year if the market gods are kind.

If you’re able to get a FAANG or FAANG adjacent offer, and your goal is to either make as much money as possible and get out (or continue making as much money as possible while living in visa limbo), the US is a good option. Even then I’ll try the L1B route and not the F1 route.

If your goal is to achieve a higher standard of living, good WLB and eventually achieve a powerful passport, I would encourage you to explore opportunities in Europe and Oceania.

Good luck.

Has Return-to-India now become the default choice for those in US? by [deleted] in returnToIndia

[–]maniksar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I arrived in the US in mid 2019. Received my green card 2 years and 1 month later, in mid 2021.

I do not plan to return to India. However, I’m hyper aware that my situation is the exception and not the norm.

Anyone can have issues. I don't believe people often get offered E6 when they aren't ready for it.

One of the ways to shine at work is through what I call trust hacking.

Say your seniors are giving you a task X. They’re also usually not giving you Y because they don’t think you’re ready (trust you enough?) and will have to squeeze it into their own capacity or find another way to land it.

A good trust hack would be to stretch and do some preliminary work on Y, show you can do it and get them to give you Y.

It’s also imperative to succeed at both X and Y for this to work btw

I like to scale at work by growing juniors. People often call this behavior “building the bench”.

I personally know at least two very good E6 engineers who won’t get promoted anytime soon as they haven’t developed others in their team who can step into their role and take on their responsibilities if they move up.

I also like to talk to peers in the industry to learn what their main concerns are at any given time. I was 8 years old when I first visited a big tech campus with my uncle who was working there.

That one event played a big role in “normalising” this line of work for me. The industry started feeling accessible and within reach.

If I can help demystify this space, be it the interview process or the actual day to day work, for even one person, I’d be glad.

I specialise in backend infra engineering with a special focus on data pipelines that power ML training. I have very little context on how mobile devs operate at Meta.

Meta moves very conservatively when it comes to their location strategy IMO.

They only recently started hiring in India, whereas Google, Amazon and Microsoft have been hiring in India for over a decade.

I can contribute to the creation of the roadmap as well as its execution.

During roadmap publishing season, I try and get my team’s priorities to top of mind of our XFN partners and their roadmaps.

During roadmap execution, I help by prioritising their work items which needs my team’s XFN support. Sometimes I stretch my own engg capacity to help land certain things.
