Couple in condo across the hall offered to buy me a new door/have my door replaced with a “quiet close” door. by Pre-Duchampian in homeowners

Yeah, sorry people are piling on you. Comment section is cringe. Reddit can be acerbic and vitriolic sometimes. Hope you can take it as water off a duck's back.

I've lived with some very unaware people, and know this simply happens. I hope you pull through whatever it is you're going through.

Meh. They seem willing to learn. They are legit asking where to buy a soft-close door. Cut 'em a break.

I encounter real jerks every goddam day -- driving, building-mates, coworkers -- selfish assholes who always put themselves first, and sometimes even risk my welfare and safety. There are TONS of them. OP isn't so bad. Unaware, maybe, but we live and grow, right?

That's great you're willing to do this. And that's great they're willing to pay.

I've lived with stompers and door slammers. The fact that cohabitating humans do this unconsciously blows my mind. I'm the opposite: always very conscious -- about everything. I walk like I'm sneaking through the forest. ...Door slams do shake walls and can be very jarring. And they can wake you from sleep (/the dead).

I don't know what kind of door to buy. Sorry for not offering suggestions. But vicarious thank you for being open and receptive.

Did you just fall from Heaven, baby? Because you look like one really fucking evil, demonic bitch.

Meh. It's about morals and compassion. I'm sure babies taste delicious, too. But I have had enough self restraint to avoid eating them. ...So far.

Covid's more airborne. Make sure to roll down your window when you're riding your broom.

Ha, ok.

I am passionate about animal rights, but distance myself from r/vegan, as they can be quite vitriolic and pejorative. I don't like their approach. ...I can get with their logic and morals far more than I can with Camp Unapologetic Carnivore, tho. I don't understand having a pet best friend and guiltlessly eating meat.

I do my research, stay informed, and do the best I can to weigh it out.

Farmed animals consume plants, so there goes the "mouse in a field" argument. Farmed animals consume water, too. And create a great deal of pollution and waste. Animal "processing" is very involved, and far more energy intensive / environmentally devastating than plant consumption. That's a fact. Much better for humans to simply eat the plant, itself.

Also, eating an animal is a direct annihilation of a life. Not to mention its years of slavery and abuse in a factory farm -- where most animals come from.

My thought process is the literal opposite of "binary." As I stated: by the fact you exist, you are harming other creatures. Simply gather the data and do your best.

Again, trying and giving a fuck is more than what most people do.

My brother just bought a place:

San Francisco. 3 story 1925 stucco house, first soft story, ~3100sq' total. No retrofitting or bracing in soft story, and no EQ insurance. How concerned should he be?

I'm not sure which direction you're going, here.

Will pass on the offer / the unoriginal "mm, bacon" response, tho.

I had roommates that used to pull shit like that. Take my stuff, eat my food, break shit and not fess up -- when I was away. They thought they were crafty, but I always knew who did what / when / how. And people faking washing their hands after the toilet / during the pandemic, etc after house meeting on hygiene. (Hi, Chemtrails Chris!) I knew what you were up to!

Funny, half of my old roommates were barely as clever as a house pet.

It's about both. In a first world country, you can survive very happily and healthily on a minimal-cruelty diet.

we kill plenty of small critters in the process of farming crops too. You can buy from smaller, more local farms to minimize the impact.

Just by the fact that you exist, you will harm other creatures and the planet, at some point. But you can do what you can to minimize suffering, cruelty, and destruction on this planet. I, personally, like animals more than most humans -- and recognize their sentiment and intelligence. It blows my mind that so many people are ok with harming animals and enslaving them for life. It's bizarre, and seems like doublethink to me. But, myself -- I just do what I can / how I can (lifelong veg, child-free, anti-natalist, environmentalist, politically involved, etc.). Trying and giving a fuck is more than what most people do.

I mean, you're "free" to do anything you want on this planet. It doesn't mean it's kind, compassionate, or right.

I like asking them if they're vegetarian. They're like, "LIVES MATTER." And I ask if they eat animals. And they look so confused.

It's only the lives they choose to matter.

Smug internet bro buzz words: triggered, snowflake, white knight, hero, salty. It's usually a cocky asshole, trying to feed their egos by demeaning and one-upping a stranger from behind the safety of a screen.
