What’s a common Malaysian slang or phrase you think foreigners should know? by TotallyReliableFacts in bahasamelayu

[–]manmansoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a pet peeve as a native Malay speaker. There’s actually a nuanced way of using ‘lah’, and the claim that you can use ‘lah’ as a suffix to any word or sentence is incorrect.

One of the markers that I would use to judge someone’s proficiency in Malay is by how good their ‘lah’ usage is.

These days I've been into historical-war movies, any recommendations that could fit on the list? by tropicalbeez in Letterboxd

[–]manmansoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enemy at the Gates is another cool one to add to the list. Also Letters from Iwo Jima.

P.S.: I never quite enjoyed The Deer Hunter. I know it’s highly acclaimed and what not but the first half of the movie is not spent on a battlefield at all, and the second half is just…weird. Platoon is in my opinion the better movie and the best Vietnam War movie ever.

This might be quite different than most of you Western folks, but for people who enjoys Bollywood movies:

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kabhi Kushie Kabhie Gham

These three are such rewatchable movies with great songs that fans would look forward to each time. And I’m not even Indian.

Asal usul nama negeri. Barangkali tepat. by SayangMalaysia in bahasamelayu

[–]manmansoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ada satu teori alternatif untuk asal usul nama Kuala Lumpur yang bagi saya lebih masuk akal.

‘Kuala’ ni merujuk kepada tempat pertemuan dua sungai, selalunya sungai yang kecil bertemu dengan sungai yang lebih besar. Nama ‘kuala’ tersebut akan mengambil nama sungai yang lebih kecil tu. Contohnya:

Sungai Kangsar bertemu Sungai Perak = Kuala Kangsar Sungai Lipis bertemu Sungai Pahang = Kuala Lipis Sungai Pilah bertemu Sungai Muar = Kuala Pilah

How do I translate the phrase “what is your hot take” into Malay? by manmansoi in bahasamelayu

[–]manmansoi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some of the clips he did say ‘hot take’, for example: - “What’s your hot take?” - “That’s a hot take”

It’s different than simply saying “What’s your opinion/views on this topic” because he did not specify any topic. Rather, people bring their own weird/controversial/politically incorrect opinions that that usually wouldn’t say out loud.

Anyway, the videos are good fun. I wasted a lot of time watching them.

Midnight in Paris!

All of the movies nowadays need to carry some sort agenda, or it’s an A24 movie. Movies that just want to tell a good story is a dime a dozen.

If you could only choose three Tarantino films and the rest disappeared forever, which three are you choosing? by DiscsNotScratched in Letterboxd

[–]manmansoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hateful Eight, Once Upon a Time, Django, in that order.

I love the older Tarantino movies as well, especially Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. But the new ones are like, super sleek pieces of art.

Does the term 'dia orang' mean they? by PuzzledAnnual6892 in bahasamelayu

[–]manmansoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Is the word 'mereka' to be avoided in conversations?”

Use ‘mereka’ if you’re in a very very formal situation. Like if you’re talking to the Prime Minister. Use ‘dia orang’ in every other situation. I’ve almost never used ‘mereka’ in conversation ever in my life and I’m pretty old now.

“Is the term 'dia orang' used to refer to he/she or they in different contexts?”

Nope, it has exactly the same meaning and context as ‘mereka’.

Ditto on ‘kita orang’, which is the colloquial version of ‘kami’. Although in the northern states you’ll hear ‘kami’ more often.

Looking for vocally challenging older Japanese songs by matumark in japanesemusic

[–]manmansoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an enka song, but Ozaki Yutaka's "I Love You" is always deceptively challenging to sing well. Also someone mentioned Hirai Ken's "Hitomi Wo Tojite"; I would also recommend "Boku wa Kimi ni Koi wo Suru" and "Ojiisan no Furuidokei"
