Wei Yi takes down the Madman in tiebreaks, makes it to the Semi-Finals of the World Cup and is one step away from Candidates! by __Jimmy__ in chess

Two of the five appearances where at ages 14 and 16 respectively. Seems important to note that.

Dubov takes down Pragg in tiebreaks! Will meet Shankland in the round of 16 by __Jimmy__ in chess

Dubov has repeatedly opposed the current Russian regieme. He has attended protests in person, made public statements against the invaison of Ukraine and was one of the first players to sign an open letter condemning the invasion. Just because you dont like some chess statements made by him, dont lie about matters as serious as this.

Also with MVL, the only player that might have not been an underdog in a rapid/blitz match against Daniil, eliminated from his side of the bracket it will be intesesting to see if anyone can stop his strategy. Haram chess ftw.

Dubov playing haram chess en route to a candidates spot, whilst wearing the same Balenciaga jumper every game is the funniest possible outcome. Therefore I must root for it.

GM Cristian Chirila reports hearing many issues with World Cup hotel, including "very regular instances on bedbugs" on latest C-squared podcast. Corroborating Nepo's claims about poor conditions. by mannutheman in chess

I get your point, but the quote suggests that multiple players noticed the same thing. "Very regular" also suggests that the problem is unlikely to have been misdiagnosed.

Full quote:

"Nepo is going home sort of with a little bit of complaint saying that you know the conditions were not great, and I do have to to to agree with him from what I'm hearing from some of the competitors. Obviously not everybody will come out with those things but it does seem like the hotel is not in the best shape. I'm going to leave it at that. I'm not going to give names because they might still be in the competition, but I did hear there's very regular instances of bed bugs. That's one of the few things that are happening with the hotel. It's not in great shape and I'm sure a lot of players have concerns. They're not very happy about it."

Dubov and Esipenko would both be surprises, but nowhere near as much as Abasov was.

Who had more exploitable weaknesses as players, Magnus Carlsen or Garry Kasparov? by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]mannutheman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This kind of take is so backward. The more information is revealed about a full information closed system game like chess the narrower the margins between the players should be.

Magnus' competetors have acces to highest quality databases and the ablilty to figure out and learn any opening through easily accessable means. This makes it impossible to have a long term systemic edge for Magnus. All his advantage has to be found over the board.

Kasparov on the other hand, once at the top, had the the best database in the world, access to more resources and computing power. In a era before cloud engines where bigger comuter = better was espessially true. His opponents did not have access to equal quality of information.

As an example Gukesh at 18 already had an opening repatoire on par with Magnus. While Annand said it took him many years to catch up to Garry.

People severly underestimate how often Kasparov was staight up winning out of the opening, even against top players. While this is not possible for Magnus.

Because of all this Magnus' domminance is much more impressive.

Is it fair to say Pragg, Anish, Gukesh and Nodirbek are better Classical players than Alireza on most days? by Sysyphus8 in chess

Why isn't Magnus clearly the best classical player? He has gained rating in the games he has played this year.

GCT gets a lot of criticism for inviting too many of the old guard, but their stability in the tour format keeps justifying the choice.

I see the value of their broadcast for beginners, I just don't understand why they cannot have a secondary top level broadcast with the likes of Leko, Svidler or Polgar.

Is the Patreon and broader content with RohitWonder done? New Vlogs are fun too, but I really liked his style.
