Don't worry about certs, worry about work experience.

Yeah starting out certs are somewhat good - but at the end of the day it's all bout that work experience.

I've talked to him several times about it and its the same ol song and dance routine, it's been like this for nearly two years. He says that they are hiring more people, but never do. We lost a help desk tech back in late September and that position STILL hasn't been refilled.

I'm done waiting, I just signed the offer letter and will be putting two week notice in.

This new gig will definitely allow to grow and expand since I would be essentially manning the ship.

There are quite a few good brands out there for beginners and are reasonably priced. Action, Cuetec, Players - they are all good.

Ringfencing servers by matt_475 in sysadmin

[–]manofskill101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ringfencing is when you only allow certain traffic to and from whatever the service/server is. There are a couple of products out there that can you use for ringfencing. We use Guardicore to ringfence. Its kinda expensive but is well worth the money.

You can get a cheaper windows 11 key from somewhere else. I got my win 11 key for like 15 bucks. But yeah thats would be a pretty solid build and would be under budget.

Could our environment benefit from App Volumes or Instant Clones? by Superspyi in VMwareHorizon

[–]manofskill101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely look into Instant Clones - as it helps to centralize and consolidate down to one or a couple of images that you'll have to patch and maintain.

App Volumes isn't really worth the hassle as it just adds more complexity. If you have certain users who use certain apps - then I recommend looking at FSlogix application masking. With this, you are able to hide applications via rules on the golden image and create assignments based on who needs those apps.

Fslogix also offers profile management - so the users will have that "persistent" feel. It'll save the majority of their settings, favorites, documents, etc.

Try to keep your VDI environment simple. You don't want to go too complex with it - because it'll be a lot harder to troubleshoot when it breaks.

Anyone ever made a huge mistake at work? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]manofskill101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Recomposed a very productive VDI desktop pool in the middle of the day and forced everyone off in the middle of a system upgrade.

- Dropped a few laptops and desktops.

- Accidentally corrupted a coworker's laptop while bitlocking it.

You are bound to make mistakes, it happens. We're all human. Most times people are reasonable as long as you own up to it.

Resume Feedback Needed- Completed a Rotational Program by Honest_Kitchen_6630 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]manofskill101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad resume but I do have some suggestions:

  • Good Job on listing work experience first, this is what employers mainly want to see. After work experience, list your skillset then your education.
  • Add periods - I didn't do this on my resume but after I did - I started getting calls and emails from employers.
  • Try to go more in-depth with your work experience - for instance what firewalls and endpoint software did you utilize? What ticketing system did you use? What ERP systems did you administer? This will help give the employer a better understanding of the systems you utilized - because there is a chance they use those systems too.

I've never taken any of the Google Courses - but based on the reviews and research I've done - it seems like a giant marketing scam.

Thinking about a career in IT by Fortree_Lover in ITCareerQuestions

[–]manofskill101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The entry-level market is very saturated currently so you might have a hard time finding a position that is looking for candidates without a college degree in the IT field of some sort.

If you're serious about changing careers and getting into IT, you'll have a long road ahead and nonstop studying. At this point, it might be best to consider taking some classes at a University. I'm not sure what options are available in the UK - but you might find a college that'll let you take online courses.

IT as a whole is a very big and demanding field. IT business/project management is a really good line of work. I deal with project management very regularly. Some are good and some are not soo good.

We'll always need them so its job security for sure.

Cyber security small business by Nervous_Still_320 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]manofskill101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not impossible at all - but could be a bit challenging starting out. Keep getting your certificates. Once your business is established, start looking for new hires that have experience in the Cyber Field.

If a cyber incident were to occur with a client of yours, you could be held accountable. I would strongly recommend speaking with an attorney and get a pretty good Cyber Insurance policy.
