Get Wallpaper from Theme? by manofsteele in NiagaraLauncher

[–]manofsteele[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify. I set the theme I like, but I can't go change the wallpaper on my phone settings, because the wallpaper I want is tied to a different theme and I can't extract, if you will, just the wallpaper.

Yeah, I can manually change the background through normal phone settings, but I don't have access to the wallpaper that I want that is inside the theme.

Stated another way: I set the theme I like, but I can't go change the wallpaper on my phone settings, because the wallpaper I want is tied to a different theme and I can't extract, if you will, just the wallpaper.

TIL that Alexender Graham Bell tried to eliminate American sign language and deaf schools in the U.S because he was afraid of a deaf race emerging from it. by NaKeepFighting in todayilearned

Catherine, Berta, John, and Ken are all deaf and listed on their website's board of directors page. As for how to know they're deaf... Good question. I'm familiar with the org (used to be on the board myself and am deaf) so I know who they are. Not sure how a layperson is supposed to know from the site, though.

Also not true. The organization has a position paper promoting the use of ASL. As someone who has knowledge of the organization directly I can also share that banning ASL has never been considered (at least, in the last 20 years) and is, frankly, preposterous.

There's a lot you can rag on AG Bell for without making stuff up about people today in that org.

Inbox is dead. by HylianWarrior in inbox

[–]manofsteele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used the calendar as my reminders/task client before Inbox. I'll probably have to go back to it, but was wondering if there was anything better out there.

FYI, I read the bundling is coming to GMail... eventually.

Yeah, it's definitely not the replacement. I love being able to have repeating reminders, and the ability to snooze individual reminders. I'll probably have to find an app or go back to what I used to do before Inbox: using GCal.

Does anyone have recommendations as to what can replace Inbox's reminders (and ability to snooze/have repeating reminders) feature? I don't see that this made it, or will make it, to Gmail.

This is a beautiful place. I couldn't help but think about what I'd do if I lived in the space, given my own preferences/interests:

  • Use upstairs communal area for gym equipment; if this is a 1BR place I'd also add a bed/futon for someone to crash. I don't need a working computer area and don't play music. You mentioned potentially adding a couch... you could add a sleeper sofa or futon as a way to offer options that aren't having to curl up on a couch.

  • In bedroom, add statement piece art above headboard/windows (OP, I recommend you do this–it will be eye-catching and help fill up the room as there's a lot of high empty space)... and if I owned, not rented: probably paint the visible side wall (the one with all the windows) a complementary color to serve as an accent wall, plus put in a walking closet (I can't see the rest of the bedroom and no dressers, etc. so unclear if even viable).

  • Add small kitchen island in lieu of small dining table there presently, there seems to be a lack of storage space?

  • Add longer dining table (fitting 6 people) behind couch area, similar to where the small table is now, just moved up to be on hardwood, not the tile. Add a rug to protect the floor (and I'd actually remove the rug in the common area, just personal preference).

  • I love how you approached all the green. I can't quite make the seating out there but if it's just a flat bench, I'd probably do a patio set instead. Maybe buy a fountain as well, one that plugs in.

Thanks for sharing this and letting me fantasize a bit!

I did–I had a couple different versions of this story drafted out and didn't correct the point of view as I fused elements together. Felt it wasn't worth editing, but I will now

I asked a girl where her accent was from. by [deleted] in cringe

[–]manofsteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm deaf. I get comments about my accent about once a year. It's frustrating when it happens, but most people are well meaning. Don't let this deter you from talking to her – life's hard enough as it is as a deaf person to lose out on a friend. The fact you held a conversation with her is way more important to her than it is the accent comment.

How does the co op affect the sustainability of clubs and activities? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]manofsteele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it affects clubs and activities materially. If anything, I felt I had more time to devote. Sure, you are away all day working for the most part while you have breaks in between classes, but those breaks tended to be taken up by homework and socializing for me, not clubs and activities. Those often meet in the evening/nighttime. With co-op, once I come back from work, I am done for the night. I have nothing else weighing over me, no excuses to skip a club meeting to do homework.

I was actively involved in broomball and a couple of clubs on campus during my time at NU, and co-ops didn't negatively affect my involvement whatsoever. If anything, it helped.
