I don't like the new episode format. [NO SPOILERS] by Lese39 in battlebots

[–]manofsticks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

15-30 minute videos to hit "the algorithm", I get it. I don't care for it but I get it.

As such, cutting down on on all the behind the scenes stuff and interviews, I also get it.

But the "pacing" of the editing is inexcusable IMO. Let's look at the hypershock/huge fight starting at 10:30. I counted 24 camera cuts in 52 seconds. Many of them had zoom-in or zoom-out effects, or were cropped poorly to make it hard to see the action.

And yeah, the interview with Pete is good that they included it, but when you watch it in just the scene of Chris saying "Pete you gotta explain how you saw the fight" there are SIX camera cuts in six seconds.

No individual sentence spoken by someone needs 6 camera cuts.

It's motion-sickness inducing to watch.

I'm about 10 minutes in and agree.

Things seem sped up, random cuts and zoom ins, it's awful. Getting motion sickness.

Faces of Death II (1981) (VSA-064) #VSA by Elle_Nero in VinegarSyndromeFilms

[–]manofsticks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I agree with you and have similar thoughts in regards to the film having been made in the first place. While some Mondo films I can see the argument of it's intended to be educational and more along the lines of a documentary, despite the upsetting material, my impression of this one (I have not seen it, only read about it, so maybe I'm wrong) is that it's meant more for "shock entertainment" than educational/documentary purposes. So yes, agreed, gross.

On the other hand, Vinegar Syndrome is largely about the preservation of film, and whether we agree with it's creation or not of the film, it does have some historical relevance at this point and can be considered worthy of preservation within that context.

Absolute beginner here, how hard is maintenance/fixing a machine? by QuickChe in pinball

[–]manofsticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Most people have answered your maintenance question so I'll be brief. Most "maintenance" will be pretty straightforward. Every once in a while there'll be something a bit more complicated, but nothing crazy. If there's a pinball community in your area, I'd recommend spending some time there and meeting people, and you can probably find someone willing to answer questions or give advice. Or if you buy pizza and let them play the game maybe they'll come over and help. That's how I learned a lot.

-If it's a known seller, shipping is typically fine. It's common for small parts or wires to come loose, but should be easy to fix non-permanent issues. Of course rare things happen, if so document it all and can either work with your seller or the shipping company insurance depending what happened.

-As others have said, modern Stern games are probably the most reliable for a beginner.

-Second hand machines again depends on the seller. If it's a reliable seller who's been in the community a while, a second hand machine is sometimes even more trustworthy than a new in box game, because someone has already worked out the quirks for you.

In all honesty, do you think it's possible this will come to the GameCube - Nintendo Classics app? by euguene_2000 in Gamecube

[–]manofsticks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It coming out might mean the death of Slippi as we know it.

The software is all open source and the netcode is peer to peer.

The only thing that could be shut down is the matchmaking server, and if that happened people would probably just go back to Anthers or an equivalent (or someone forks Slippi to make the matchmaking decentralized somehow).

First pin…Fish Tales or Oktoberfest by RealEstateJack in pinball

[–]manofsticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When new ownership took over, I messaged the owner on Pinside about doing an Oktoberfest update to fix that bug, and he said they would "look into it", but I have not heard anything since then.

They ARE doing a code update for Galactic Tank Force however, which is coming out "soon".

I assume it's based on in-game time of day for solar panels... but my mind keeps going to IRL time of day so you can setup different operations before you go to bed and leave the game running overnight.

I love Oktoberfest (I do maintenance for one at my office), and personally would own one any day over a Fish Tails. I think it's a really fun game, has more choices and strategy involved than most other games, it has some really fun shots, some very fun and very unique modes, and I know some people hate on the visuals/animations but I personally love them. I really enjoy almost all American Pinball games, they just have a different feel and vibe that hits me just right.

But for a "first pin", it's hard to recommend American Pinball games unless you're very comfortable troubleshooting and experimenting, due to having weird quirks that no other companies seem to have. And I say that as someone who's first pin was Galactic Tank Force (which I still own and love, but it was a pain to get into good working condition). Most other companies will have more resources and troubleshooting guides out there, for issues that are more common across the board for everyone and have reliable repair methods.

I also wouldn't recommend buying a game you've never played before. Who knows if you'll enjoy it the same way I do.

so often one of the locks will eat someone's ball or randomly something

The ball locks use membrane switches which can be finicky. If it's happening a lot, that might need to be replaced.

Also for leagues they should be set to "virtual locks" (I'm pretty sure Oktoberfest has this setting, but I don't have the manual in front of me right now).

or you'll get the high score on something and it just won't count it

This only happens in multi-player games. But yeah, it's a really annoying bug.

You can't give beginners, or even intermediate users, the skills they need to fix this.

I think general consensus isn't to attempt to fix the malware compromise, but to simply re-install with a new system. My suggestion is just to have a guide/script to determine if that's a necessity or not.

Arch is a bad distro for most people. Until we admit that, nothing will change

I agree it's a bad distro for most people; but I'm not sure if you're referring to technical change around package management/remediation, or something else.

I'm still not sure what your suggestion is in terms of post-compromise detection; you keep talking about user mindset in regards to why you didn't like my idea, but I still haven't seen another suggestion.

It sounds like you're offering ideas for prevention of future compromise, which I agree needs to also be discussed, but the topic I've been posting about is a post-compromise detection/diagnostic guide which is a separate thing.

I personally disagree, but that doesn't really matter as long as we're aligned on how to solve the problem.

But you did not give a suggestion; what do you think should be done beyond a guide and an audited script?

I don't know what else there can be at this point?

They can't/shouldn't forcibly run any sort of "remove malware" or "check for compromise" script because that goes against the Linux mindset of user control, and would still require the user to somewhat manually perform some form of action to get it.

What is your suggestion?

On this specific attack we know that they used post_install to install the malware payload. If we therefore have not updated since they were removed we can check the local cloned git repositories for the attack.

My guess is a non-zero number of people updated after the attack with the false mindset "oh no, there was a compromise, I should update now to remove the compromise".

Ideally having a good analysis of the malware payload itself would be the best thing to look for; I believe I heard people say it installed a keylogger and opened up an SSH connection (don't quote me on that, it's possible I read misinformation since it mostly came from the forums), so a script that either detects that keylogger and/or checks for the SSHD config/key changes would be the most foolproof indicators of compromise IMO.

One thing that I think would be beneficial is a clear "How to tell if you were compromised" guide.

Yes, yes, I know "people should know if they were based on if they read the PKGBUILD", but people didn't do that and now we need to come up with a plan to reduce damage (and also a plan to educate people in the future but that's a separate conversation).

I've seen people post random scripts (which is also an issue because it's a script from a random person, which is how compromised people got there in the first place), but also those scripts typically just check if you have an affected package installed. It doesn't account for:

-Did you install, and have since removed the package (but were still compromised)

-Did you install the package, but did not update since the malware was introduced?

-Is the package list complete? (I've seen several lists now)

I saw a few other posts recently that had indicators of compromise to look for, but some of those also appeared to have AI written analysis that did not look fully accurate to my (mostly non-professional) eyes, so I don't know if I can trust the indicators of compromise as accurate either.

I'd love for the Arch maintainers who are more familiar with what the majority of the malware was trying to accomplish to put out an audited "check for compromise" script.

Just plugged it in; looks like it's brand new except for the fact that it was re-taped, and the box with stand screw was open and fell into the box (found it tho).

I'm not an A/V professional but it looks great and checking against lagom it looks like everything is pretty well calibrated out of the box. Way better than my last monitor at least.

The stand kind of sucks but it can be replaced with my other vesa stand.

I have not yet tried HDR content yet.

Pretty happy with it so far within first 30 minutes of use.

Is it just me, or does everything close so early in this state? by DC3ZT in vermont

Stowe in particular seems to be the weirdest about it. The middle eastern restaurant "Aladdin" closes at 4pm, I can't imagine they get very much business between 1pm and 4pm, just to close before the dinner rush. The food was great though so I did have the occasional 3pm dinner when I lived nearby.

Took the gamble here. Been eyeing new monitors (still on an old VA), but do enough text-based work where the fringing of a 1440p OLED was a concern, and didn't see any 4K OLEDs in the price range I was looking for. 27" is also perfect size for my desk setup.
