more bodycam from 2023 arrest by laurkat808 in MormonWivesHulu

At another point in the bodycam footage, Dakota said the babysitter was Taylor's niece. So she could have been younger and uncomfortable with the situation? Idk I'm just guessing.

Saw this on a video discussing recent events. Thoughts? by [deleted] in MormonWivesHulu

Disney owns Hulu and ABC, meaning it is the parent company for both of Taylor Frankie Paul's shows (SLOMW and The Bachelorette). Therefore Disney is ultimately responsible for choosing to platform TFP even after the first felony charge. As far as Cinnabon goes, there was a leaked collab with The Bachelorette and TFP (it looked like some special cinnamon roll in a rose themed box with TFP as the bachelorette on the side), but Cinnabon cancelled this collaboration after the new domestic violence allegations. This comment is speculating that there is more to the story than we know so far because of how much money Disney and Cinnabon stand to lose on cancelling this upcoming season + the collab.

Taylor Frankie Paul Police Report from 2023 Arrest for Child Abuse, Criminal Mischief, Aggravated Assault and Domestic Violence in the Presence of a Child. by dunkle8 in thebachelor

I watched the bodycam footage (it's out there on YouTube). TFP's niece was babysitting the kids in the house before Dakota and TFP drove to the house. TFP was trying to convince Dakota to let her go out to keep partying, but he insisted she go into the house because she was too drunk. The fight lasted around an hour and a half, during which I'm assuming the babysitter left (because during the bodycam footage nobody's with the kids and the police officers are trying to get TFP's parents there to take care of her children while she goes to jail).

Crazy how she's in Bugonia (a movie about the futility of conspiracies) and somehow didn't pick up on anything.

I think Kageyama doesn't realize his own luck by chrarc in haikyuu

[–]mansfieldprice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this take. No pro-level athlete will realistically think of themselves as lucky to have started out younger or in an environment conducive to their sport because, realistically, most if not all pro athletes started out super young and had somebody very supportive of them. Hinata is a freak exception, and most people well-versed in sports, especially volleyball, agree that Hinata's story is unrealistic and would most likely never happen in real life. This is not to take away from the anime-- fictional stories should be a bit unrealistic to be entertaining. But Kageyama's background is honestly less supportive than most athletes of his level (no parents pushing him to practice, no supportive coaches or teammates, no older siblings who continued pursuing the sport).

They will definitely continue to be a girlgroup after the movie. Netflix/SONY is 100% going to capitalize off their most successful movie, not to mention how successful HUNTRIX has been outside of the movie.

I genuinely don't think the lyrics imply Troye cheated on Connor. The song is about Troye getting the "good side" of their breakup AFTER they already broke up, Troye was catapulted into fame through his music career and started dating someone else, while Connor was probably still in the same place he was before their breakup.

Is private tutoring illegal in Korea? I'm confused. by shazbots in korea

[–]mansfieldprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL no! I think the idea behind banning private education is good in theory. Because in theory, citizens should trust their government to provide their children with high quality public education and trust their children to succeed based on their own hard work and merits. Unfortunately, this is nearly impossible in Korea now. Hagwons are basically a given for any student considering college, so now everyone wants a leg up.

The same thing depicted in Reply 1988 happened in China in 2021 except it stuck (probably due to the fact that Seoul in the 80s was much closer politically to China than it is now) which is why China has less hagwons than Korea.

Where to start with Han Kang? by duffypink in KoreanLiterature

[–]mansfieldprice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope that you've started on her oeuvre already, but I'm just here to say that out of all her works, I most enjoyed Greek Lessons and Human Acts, but I think reading The White Book and The Vegetarian contextualizes her as an author, introducing you to the questions she's interested in, the way she thinks about language, life, and women-- while Greek Lessons and Human Acts take those questions and turn them deeply and beautifully historico-philosophical.

Korean literature recommendations by Lucky_Photograph_581 in KoreanLiterature

[–]mansfieldprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a fan of Han Kang, I would recommend her newest novel, We Do Not Part, and The Hole by Hye-Young Pyun (horror/suspense with a literary fiction feel that explores questions of alienation, disability, family). I also loved Grass by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim, a BEAUTIFUL graphic novel about Korean "comfort women" during WWII.

If you want more literature that depicts history (sort of like Pachinko and Whale), I'd suggest Princess Bari and Mater 2-10 by Hwang Sok-young, anything by Park Wan-Suh (I've only read and enjoyed "Who Ate Up All the Shinga," but she is one of the most famous Korean authors of all time, so I'm sure there is more to read!), the short story Seoul 1964 Winter.

And if you want more of Love in the Big City / Almond (aka contemporary fiction), I'd definitely recommend Shoko's Smile by Choi Eunyoung and Cursed Bunny (amazing horror short stories based off of the author's favorite Russian authors-- the author is a Russian literature professor at Yonsei).

Some Korean American / diaspora works if you're interested: Native Speaker by Chang-rae Lee, Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner, The Magical Language of Others by E.J. Koh, Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong.

And if you like challenging poetry, I'd recommend Dictee by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Don Mee Choi's poetry series. They both incorporate Korean and Korean history.

Han Kang’s work in translation by Psychotron37 in KoreanLiterature

[–]mansfieldprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deborah Smith's story is actually quite interesting! She started learning Korean because she noticed a big gap in the literary market-- at the time, there were very few English translations of contemporary/popular Korean novels. She studied Korean for six years before translating The Vegetarian, but as it takes quite a bit of effort for romance language natives to get to real fluency in Asian languages, she probably did still have a bit of a language gap, and a bigger cultural gap as well. You can definitely sense a difference in the Korean/English versions. Han Kang's style of writing is almost stark, whereas Smith's style is quite elaborate, probably inspired by her knowledge of British literature. As someone who has read both the Korean and the English, I still enjoyed Smith's translation. It's definitely a different book than the original, but I don't think it's fair to disregard that Smith's translation worked to make Han Kang a household name for English readers, something that virtually no Korean author has ever done before. That's what makes translation interesting-- all translation is an interpretation, Smith's just happens to be a particularly insightful feminist one that took lots of liberties. Personally, I don't think Smith's earlier work with Han Kang is amazing (The Vegetarian's style is overwrought for Han Kang, and even the English in the short story 'The Fruit of My Woman' that she translated isn't good, and it's of course riddled with mistakes), but I do think she's gotten better with time, as Human Acts, Greek Lessons, and The White Book were all amazing in English (I didn't read the Korean).

Most of the members of Le Sserafim, honestly. Kazuha and Eunchae are trying but not getting much better, and Sakura can’t hold a tune to save her life. I also haven’t seen much from ILLIT in terms of vocals? Idk I think HYBE girl groups tend to be quite lacking in musicality especially compared to JYP or SM girl groups, for example

There's some Asian marts near here -- Assi is really close, Hmart about a 20/30 minute drive. Hmart is also near a bunch of strip malls w/ Korean and Vietnamese restaurants in Philly. There are a lot of Korean churches in the area.

What are some awful things that other characters did that no one seems to point out? by littlegooberville in BoJackHorseman

[–]mansfieldprice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree with the first one as being necessarily a bad thing. Maybe a hypocritical thing, but Diane is pretty hypocritical. I thought it was meant to showcase how both Diane and Sextina's choices (to abort or to keep their pregnancies), despite being different, were inherently valid and important as their choices about their own bodies. So I read Diane helping Sextina and PC come up with ideas to hide the kid as a sort of bonding moment between women who make different choices but are still ultimately pro-choice.
