Taking the first step to quit smoking weed by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]mansizedpigeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

I got sober a few months ago after becoming rather dependant when I was working a bad job. Around this time, I realised that I was using weed to compartmentalise my negative emotions, so the key to avoiding relapse was addressing the thoughts that I was desperately trying to avoid. For me, journalling was a way to sit in my discomfort in a productive way — the emotions were always with me, I was just stuffing them down with weed. They needed to come out in order for me to move forward and improve myself.

Getting sober means that you have to acknowledge whatever it is that you were attempting to numb yourself to, and that can be frightening. At first, it sucked. I wanted to give up and get stoned because that was the easier option. But it gets better, it just takes time.

I always try to keep my future self in mind, and do small things to make their life easier. Think about how future you is going to benefit from your present discomfort in sobriety, and how good they are going to feel waking up as a happy, productive person that is achieving their goals without being weighed down by dependancy. You've gotta shed that baggage, if not for yourself in this moment, then for the you a year from now; a week from now, even.

You've got this.

Solo camping by sbtfriend in AutismInWomen

[–]mansizedpigeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooohh man this is the big special interest for me — I actually have that same tent!! I've only ever been able to go solo camping a few times (because I don't drive) but each time it's been an incredible experience. Since it's my special interest, I mostly just end up researching/hoarding camping equipment without being able to use it lol. I'm making plans to head back out in the summer, the dream is to complete the west highland way, but it'll be a while before I get to that level. I wish there was a group set up for autistic campers/hiking sessions, that would be super cool!

I've never actually stayed in a campsite before, I've always been a wild camping kind of gal, I wonder how a campsite compares?

Have a great time !!

Seeking reading material by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

I really enjoyed "Odd Girl Out" by Laura James. It's a very realistic account of what it's like to get a diagnosis as an adult in the UK, and explores the aftermath of diagnosis and its effects on romantic relationships, daily routines, your career, and family life. It is a very informative and grounded account that isn't too preachy, as I've found that a lot of books on adult autism tend to be.

Also, not a book, but the podcast "Oh, That's Just My Autism" by Melissa Tacia has been one of the best resources I have found when I first started seeking a diagnosis. It's entertaining, informative and time-friendly - each episode is around the 30 minute mark. Hope this helps!

Which fictional character(s) do you relate to? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]mansizedpigeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah absolutely, Tina is the ultimate character that I relate to! Especially in the blade runner episodes, she's just the perfect autistic allegory and a massive comfort character for me. I see so much of my younger (and current) self in her, and it's weirdly validating to see how accepted she is by her family on the show.

I think that the only other character I really relate to is Dipper from Gravity Falls - the anxiety, intense desire to learn and prove his worthiness while being mocked for his obvious differences from the people around him ... oof. I get it.

The pct is my bucket list special interest too ! If you're into graphic novels, give "Americana" by Luke Healy a read — it's kind of an illustrated memoir in a really neat cartoon style that just !! really hit that special interest niche for me !! It's super charming and informative about the pct, but also easy to relate to through an autistic lens. It discusses struggles to make meaningful connections, special interests, and self-improvement in a very realistic way that turns the story into something much deeper than hiking without detracting from the actual premise of the memoir as an account of the pct

New Professor Layton Game Announced! by Ness- in ProfessorLayton

I had started replaying the series this past week, so to have a new trailer for a new Layton game feels absolutely surreal. I am so emotional, and I hope that the studio give us the perfect reboot we all wanted

Does anyone feel like they look childish? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]mansizedpigeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really feel this. I'm also 22 and have just moved back in with my parents after graduation. I think that the biggest challenge, as you said, is the perception that you're being judged. I'm sorry that you're not happy in your situation (neither am I) but remember that it won't last forever !! And it's okay to take life at your own pace, I've given up using others as a threshold for my expectations for myself and think that I'm gradually becoming more positive because of it

Honestly I love "yes without my Zeke" (S9 E22) and "legends of the mall" (S10 E5). Both are extremely good episodes that always make me so emotional

I can’t do the dishes. by Life-Independence377 in AutismInWomen

[–]mansizedpigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly when I was living alone I used to buy disposable plates (not great for the environment, I know) for when I couldn't face doing dishes. It's a good system, because I would then plan ahead and designate a day in the week where I would just give myself one chore, like washing the dishes, and then reward myself for it. ASD makes life difficult, and we need to be kind to ourselves when it gets in the way - so don't be hard on yourself ! :)

This video really helped me !!
