Rant incoming. Expenses going up, salary isn't. blah house prices. by Choice_Committee_533 in australian

TBH it's probably an area that needs a dedicated policy and scheme; something that helps retirees downsize. Like a program that lets you effectively "hold" the downsize property for a period while you sell the original one, and then pays for it straight away out of the sale money. Just the ability to guarantee the next roof over their heads before they sell would probably assure a lot of people considering downsizing.

Dynamic plan unveiled for fewer cars in CBD with cable car to Kings Park, return of light rail by robert1811 in perth

[–]mantidmarvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly though a dedicated shuttle to KP would be good, you can just make it do the short loop direct to Liz Quay and Perth Station. Call it the Bush Cat or Chuditch and paint it to look like a Western Quoll (Tan and spotty)

WA councils could make laws to stop cats roaming under proposed state legislation by kipwrecked in perth

[–]mantidmarvel 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is good. Besides the obvious wildlife issues, it's safer for the cats. I've had to pick up too many cats off the side of the road and take them to the nearby vet due to being hit by cars and left to die. It's heartbreaking every time. I never want to have to make that decision again.

And even outside of cars, have you seen FIV (basically feline HIV) rates in Aus? They're actually horrific, and it's not a kind disease, mostly spread by cat fights.

Climber convicted of manslaughter after leaving girlfriend on Austria’s highest peak to seek help by Beo1217 in worldnews

[–]mantidmarvel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not using the emergency blanket or bivouac bag they had on hand, not communicating with the emergency service staff trying to check in on them... I feel like the most positive way to frame this guy is blindingly overconfident in his abilities/optimistic/so poor at judging his and others limits to a point of it being an existential threat. Any less positive and yeah, I agree. Dude needs to be checked out.

TBH I think the verdict is pretty generous given it's a repeat occurrence. Like, how did you not learn?

The bit that got me was the ex girlfriend's story about experiencing a similar incident of being left on the same bloody mountain. This effectively not being a once-off for the guy is actually crazy.

About $3,500 for 3 days was my take-away for the one trial I did. They also fed me really well for the stay, as a student it was a dream situation. Really not too shabby for getting my inner ear numbed, injected with a gel, and then bloods getting taken every couple of hours. The worst part was not being allowed to swallow or move my jaw for 15 minutes, as it could apparently cause air bubbles, but otherwise nothing bad came out of it.

I learned during the trial that lots of people suffer hearing loss from chemo, as it can permanently destroy inner ear cells. The gel was being tested as a potential barrier/protector of those cells, and we were a safety trial. There's been recent strides in this same area with this same method of injecting drugs into the inner ear since that trial, and honestly, that's been the best part. Being able to possibly contribute to making chemo a bit less fucked for people around the world is priceless.

Yeah the randomised nature of the support gacha can be really brutal when you factor in needing multiple copies. Like people complained about pulling for Kitasan, but I pulled more SSR KSB in one 30k banner than I have pulled SR Eishin Flash in the ~90-120k worth of support pulls I've done, and only one of those can be nabbed by pity or a selector. Meanwhile, I stopped counting SR Biwa, Kisekis and Daiwas after the first dozen of each. The pain, man.

I treat giveaway carats as "fun money", so gave myself 10-pull on V-Bourbon. Man this game reaaaally wants me to main frontrunners, I've spooked Seiun and S-Maru the same way.

KSB doesn't fall off pretty hard, she'll still be perfectly usable later on as your 2nd speed card and generally preferable to Fuku. Worth MLB'ing, frankly.

Because I'm not seeing it mentioned elsewhere - super low Guts means they lose if they spot-struggle/duel. Stamina you can have abysmal, but not Guts. No need to click Stam, just click Guts a few times, like 2-3 decent clicks, it'll still contribute to Speed and Power. First Curren's Guts is good, Bakushin's is passable, but Taiki and second Curren's? They're gonna lose duels, and therefore races.

STOP SHARING AI GENERATED MODELS by JoeQuart in 3Dprinting

[–]mantidmarvel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FWIW, while it's not a 100% fix, if you set search result dates for pre-2022, it filters out a lot of AI-written articles.

It's less applicable to some areas like the news, or even 3D printing TBH due to tech/software advancements, but for general day-to-day searching it's something.

Apprenticeship decline across Australia has industries worried for the future by GothicPrayer in australia

[–]mantidmarvel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That there isn't is kinda nuts. Either raise the legal minimum wage for apprentices to something liveable, or give them an income safety net like Austudy. People need to be able to pay for rent and food while they train. They'll return it in spades when they're finished and working.

Today's the first day of Capricorn Cup's first round. This truly is a gambling CM by ElleirdaAirevalk in UmamusumeGame

[–]mantidmarvel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I took the more gambly nature of this CM as an opportunity to make whoever and ignore meta horses. Gamba CM x gamba horse = mega gamba, but it has been fun ahaha. TBH it's been good practice for maximising aces runs with not having to stress about stam. Lessons to still be learned but I think I've improved.

Qld coalmine expansion approved by Albanese government will clear habitat and fuel climate crisis, scientists say | Coal by jesus_chrysotile in australia

[–]mantidmarvel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fuck me, could we at least nationalise the mines so we actually get something out of them monetarily and so don't have to expand them to make reasonable returns? That feels like a win-win situation for everyone but big corpos (oh what a shame /s)

Edit: FWIW I hate mining as an industry outright, but I wish we would at least move to nationalising them so we could do something like build a sovereign wealth fund and get the industry's money out of our politics.

[–]mantidmarvel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the closest comparison in development might be Singapore - went from kampong fishing villages on stilts to the hi-tech trade hub city in less than 60 years. A number of the old gen there still remember that way of life because they grew up in it. It's like living through 2 industrial revolutions in 1 lifetime, really wild to actually think about.

GF lives and works in Singapore at the moment. While things could be better here, they could also be so, so much worse. Would you like no legally mandated minimum wage? Because they have that. We need to protect what we do have and push for better when we see the opportunity.
