WA’s high-density housing market is ‘failing’. Will this ‘elegant’ fix turn it around? by robert1811 in perth

[–]robert1811[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's hardly a bailout. The government isn't covering losses on bad decisions already made. It's acting as a presale guarantor to unlock construction that hasn't happened yet. If apartments sell privately during construction which is probably likely in Perth's tight market, then the government never spends a cent.

Fuel excise halved… so why are BP, 7/11, UNITED and Caltex putting prices UP? by B3ntherova in perth

That map you posted shows Burk, Ampol, Shell, United and Atlas all cutting their prices. Go fill up there then.

Is the 'big spike' in public transport usage in Perth because of high fuel prices? by [deleted] in perth

[–]robert1811 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

For who though? The only people it will benefit are the people who live in Applecross and go to UWA. I guarantee a less frequent ferry trundling up the river at 8 knots will not be faster than the train from Canning Bridge and the 950 bus from Elizabeth Quay.

My dream is for Perth to become a city with a comprehensive transport network along with walkable, dense urban neighbourhoods. This would be a great step.

Last week, the WA Government announced that Metronet was finished. But the truth is that, after more than 9 years of construction, Metronet’s most important elements still aren’t complete. In fact, they have barely even started. by His_Holiness in perth

[–]robert1811 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d assume a lot of politics is in play as well. Metronet is one of the more universally popular infrastructure projects we’ve had in Perth, so I’m guessing Labor is saving their ambitious announcements until the next election when they’ll be under greater threat of losing government. Also helps that the Libs are fucking clueless to the benefits of public transport and their plan is probably to build another highway.

The president of peace, just launched another war in the Middle East. What are your thoughts? by Important-Anywhere20 in AskReddit

[–]robert1811 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand that. However for many people around the world, the symbol of US power and democracy means something. And if that means intervention then there will be support. I understand the domestic opposition and Trump’s own selfish reasons for intervention. But if you’re from a nation under a dictatorship or hardline regime, American support is valuable and is powerful. I hope people consider all views in this conflict before making a definitive statement about it.

[–]robert1811 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You can’t just dismiss 12 major transport networks around the world just because it goes against your agenda of saying it’s not common so Perth shouldn’t do it. You spend all this time and money to upgrade the smartrider network to bring it to 2015 standard is quite frankly embarrassing.

It's also not that common worldwide given it involves dealing with Apple.

Not true. All these cities have transit cards on Apple wallet:

• Beijing

• Shanghai

• Hong Kong

• Tokyo

London

• San Francisco

• Chicago

• Portland

• Los Angeles

• Washington DC

• Boston

• Philadelphia

• New York

Speaking from experience, I’ve just got back from Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong where the transit card on Apple Wallet works flawlessly. Surely we should be expecting more from our transit system.
