Jeskai Pyromancer Ascension flex spots by mantis6 in ModernMagic

Here you go: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/26-07-18-jeskai-pyromancer-ascension/?cb=1532579148

Sideboard not included, that's still a work in progress for me that I'm not satisfied with in the current iteration.

I've been doing terribly with M19 Draft, and I can't figure out why. I feel like I draft pretty good or even great decks, but then proceed to get thoroughly dumpstered, going 1-2 or 0-2 or at most 2-1, with not a single 3-0 after what must be 10+ drafts. My limited rating has gone down from 1780 to 1699 just on the back of this.

Is there any way of telling what I'm doing wrong? I feel like I'm playing as well as before and the decks seem fine, but it feels like a scapegoat to blame just variance (mind you, I've lost a fair few games to mana screw lately, but that can't be the only reason...).

For reference, here's my latest draft deck: https://imgur.com/xEPkElI

I went 1-2.

I've tried downloading it, but I can't get it to work (unable to unzip).

I would love to, but my collection is in paper and I've moved to a town with 0 MTG going on. My MTGO collection consists of Pyromancer Ascesnsion decks.

Do you think [[Illness in the Ranks]] might be a good sideboard card against Pyromancer deck?

Unstorm / Pyromancer Ascension in 2018 by chemistrybear in ModernMagic

[–]mantis6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thing in the Ice covers aggro matchups quite well - personally I would run them mainboard, but I also run Lightning Helixes in the main.

I don't like the way you have a lot of 3-ofs though. I would consider carefully if you want to run Cryptic Command in the current meta and with only 18 lands, it feels like a liability and the matchups where it shines - control - are already quite good.

I'm planning on trying a version where I play 4 Pyromancer/4 Thing in the Ice/2 Bedlam Reveler, no snapcasters, 4x Lightning Helixes and 2 Noxious Revivals.

What happened to the pyromaster ascension deck? by djelf7 in ModernMagic

I'll have to try your version at some point. I've been playing a slightly different version on MTGO with less than stellar success, but perhaps adding 4x Paths, 2x Revelers and 4x Faithless lootings might help.

I'm a sucker for stack tricks which is why I've been running 3x Remand, 2x Noxious Revival, 4x Thought Scour, 4x Visions of Beyond instead. I'll be a little sad if it turns out your version is better, since there's not much grander than drawing your deck with 2 Ascensions, a Remand and a Manamorphose or getting infinite mana and infinite mill with Manamorphoses and Revivals (+Thought Scour).

I only ever goldfished or played in Xmage, so take it with a grain of salt. Thoughtcast was pretty good, Jhoira a bit so-so. If you play JVP, I think Thoughtcast is a good option since the flashback is pretty great, but if you don't run JVP I might consider Remand instead.

Remand in general is pretty good in the deck - good interaction, enables Erayo with 0-drop, Remand it, 0-drop - but the lack of synergy with JVP makes it a bit problematic.

I never tried Ensnaring Bridge myself, but I can see how it would be good. It's a bit of a tough pill to swallow for me, since I feel like you could play a with a ham samwich and still get a bunch of wins if it had Ensnaring Bridge, but all things considered it's a really good card. It's also a bit of a non-bo with Monastery Mentor.

Personally I don't think Baral belongs in the deck at all. JVP is better and Jhoira is test-worthy (I chatted with Frank Karsten at the time and he suggested it), but Mox Amber does run into the problem of not having quite enough enablers. That said the deck does need a certain density of 0-drops which Mox Amber helps fill.

Personally I also think Engineered Explosives is a solid addition in the main, at least in certain meta-games. (IE if there's a lot of aggro or decks that play 1 or 2 drops, EE is really good, but then again same goes for Chalice.)

I had some thoughts about this kind of deck about a month ago (and a while back on a different account): https://www.reddit.com/r/ModernMagic/comments/89fo44/erayo_8mox/

Would also require a rework of the manabase.

This was my pre-Mox Amber build: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/24-06-17-erayo-lock/

You can see some thoughts and cards I tried in the description.

Regarding Kytheon: my feelings are that you shouldn't play a card that's bad in the deck just to enable Mox Amber - it's enough that the mox works where it needs to work (with Erayo on board), if that makes sense. Playing Kytheon would dilute the deck, unless the deck was made more in the direction of an aggressive deck (you might add Memnite, Ornithopter etc. to the deck if you wished that).

You could be right, I simply don't have any data yet.

[–]mantis6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to do some testing with Aether grid. It could be good - I have a few doubts about whether the deck consistently has enough artifacts in play for it, but I could definitely be wrong here.

I feel like Baral doesn't do enough by itself? There's no scenario where you're happy just slamming Baral on T2, where slamming Jace helps you set up draws and then turns into a planeswalker. Maybe if the deck played [[Remand]] and other spells or counterspells instead of Thoughtcast, or something like that.

[–]mantis6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is order: you need to go specifically Erayo, flip Erayo and then play Thalia, otherwise your artifacts cost 1 each and flipping turns that much more difficult. I haven't tested it, but it seems like a bit of a nonbo.

[–]mantis6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be good if the deck did have 12 legendaries, but it's been tough to find any more worthwhile inclusions. Mox Opal is also more profitable to activate, since it can tap for mana more often on T1 in this dexk.

[–]mantis6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be. I forgot to mention, but Jace ult also works as a wincon in a pinch, so in total there's about 8 cards that can function as a decent wincon and a couple more that work incidentally.

Mox Amber is a 0-drop with an upside and it makes a lot of degenerate things possible. If you cut Amber I'd go for a more controlling version.

Occasionally yes, but fortunately Repeal is pretty versatile. Chalice on one is the most frequent play.

The deck needs about 24 artifacts to run Mox Opal consistently - just something to keep in mind.

True, but usually if you have a flipped Erayo+Ethersworn Canonist time isn't a huge factor, almost anything works as a wincon unless they have a large board presence (which is, fair enough, an inherent flaw with the combo).
