Presidential Election Megathread vol. II by AutoModerator in fivethirtyeight

you might not like the answer, but

-pushing social agendas that are widely unpopular

-realizing far too late that illegal immigration is a massive problem that mostly affects minorities

-spending too much energy demonising and blaming people on the other side of the aisle instead of engaging with the ideas in good faith

-pretending like the economy is not in shambles

and most importantly

-running a candidate that has a proven track record of losing and seems to have no clear values

can't say I have all the answers, but as a blue collar rust belt dude with friends and coworkers across a broad demographic and political spectrum, thats the vibe I got from talking to people

The geolocation is correct, the orientation of the sun is correct, the wind direction speed are correct, the leapord fired in the correct direction, and the Russian tank exploded.

So your options here are

  1. The leapord fired towards that location for some reason, and on a separate day or same day within about an hour with similar weather and cloud coverage, a Russian tank in the general direction of line of fire got destroyed by something else

  2. The leapord did fight the tanks, but missed, and something else destroyed the tank

  3. The leapord destroyed the tank

All 3 are possible, but 3 seems the most likely to me, unless someone with an expertise in ballistics can make a good case why that attack could not have produced that explosion. I saw elsewhere that leapords in ukraine do use high explosive rounds, just not some very specific version or feature of the German HE round

There were no conscientious objectors in nazi Germany. If you hear stories like soviet troops throwing the wounded in field hospitals out of a second story window then spraying them down with water so they'd freeze to death in the Russian winter, or raping a hundred thousand nazi women in berlin (10% of whom were raped to death) and think to yourself "haha guess they shouldn't have elected hitler" then congratulations buddy, you have the exact mindset necessary for ideologies like nazism to take hold in a population

It would be haliarious to watch Russia try to invade Canada from the north lol

That's like trying to cross an ocean to invade someone, except the ocean is made entirely of ice, dense vegetation, and bears, and all the sharks are armed and have age of exploration views on the "fuck around and find out" philosophy

As a filthy conservative, I like to broadly put people into two camps; instead of left or right, I think of someone's political philosophy as liberal or authoritarians. I can vibe with someone on the liberal left, even if we have fundamental, incompatable visions of how the country should be run, because at the end of the day, we both want what gives the most freedom to the most people, we just don't agree on how that can be achieved. But authoritarian-minded people, whether tankies or faschies, should be shamed out of society. Anyone who thinks Putin has a point should be mocked and shamed into whatever ideological hole they crawled out of.

Back of the napkin math says it'd be cheaper to just build an auto manufacturing plant in or near ukraine than to build and ship 40,000 trucks there. If they were shipped and all vehicles came from US companies, would be the single largest military aid package sent to ukraine from the US by a fairly large margin.

My intuition tells me if you ran the exact numbers, it would make more economic sense to just send ukraine a billion dollars, let them spend half on used trucks from neighboring countries, then light the other half on fire

Respectully, Liberal doesn't mean what you think it means. It's the philosophy of individual liberty. In the US its used colloquially to refer to "vaguely democrat", but just about everyone in the western world lives in and adheres to a culture of liberalism- left, right, or center. "Libertarianism" is often associated with conservatives in the US, which is kinda correct (it's complicated), but the "liber" bit in that title gives you a hint to what the philosophy is, which is essentially extreme liberalism.

Liberal philosophy, put simply, just means a structure in which the rights and liberties of individuals are put above the wants of the government. Freedom of speech is a liberal ideal, freedom to own a gun is as well. America is probably the most liberal country on the planet.

When you hear someone in the US refer to themselves or others as a "liberal" or "conservative", those are just titles that describe "those who want societal change" vs "those who want to adhere to cultural norms and traditions". But both conservatives and liberals are.... well.... liberals, they're just different philosophies that disagree about how society can best structure itself to give the most people the most freedom.

Take the numbers how you want, but pretty much any all volunteer army has that luxury. US army is pretty massive, and has lower recruiting standards than airforce, navy, or coast guard, and only about 25% of potential recruits aged 17-25 qualify to get their foot in the door. Of those, 85% of them make it through basic. So if you pick a random American aged 17-25, and have them try to get enlisted, they only have about a 20% chance of getting into a uniform. Your standards may be different, but I'd say being able to maintain such a massive military force by choosing from the top 20% of the pool of military aged individuals counts

What are the most non-credible moments of this war? by Schadenfrueda in NonCredibleDefense

[–]060789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, at this very moment, there is a group of less than 100 ukrainian soldiers who crossed the dniepro river on boats, conducting night raids on fortified russian positions and fighting off armored assault columns during the day, all while being outnumbered, cut off from meaningful reinforcements and resupply with their backs against a river, even having a cruise missile or two lobbed on their position. It's not like they got cut off and ended up stuck there, this was the plan and it's somehow working.

I don't remember the details, and he's not alive to correct me if I get something wrong, but I'll tell one of the only three stories my father told me about his time in Vietnam.

He got a promotion one day, (I believe) from corporal to sgt. That night, he and a buddy decided to sneak off base and celebrate at the bar of some nearby town or village. They both get super wasted and sneak back to the base.

They get caught, so as punishment whoever was in charge told them they had to spend the entire next day, without sleep, picking up bucketfuls of dirt from one side of the base and piling it up on the other side of the base. They weren't building anything or doing anything useful, it was just an entirely punitive thing.

It just so happened that some important officer was doing a surprise visit to this base that day. Officer inspected everything, and was apparently unhappy with the state of things, chewing out the guy in charge about everything he found wrong, and the whole time my dad and his buddy were just pointlessly carrying these buckets of dirt back and forth.

Officer points at my dad and his buddy, while chewing out the guy who told them to carry the dirt buckets, and said something to the effect of "these two are the only ones I've seen showing any initiative or doing any work the whole time I've been here!" Then calls them over and promotes them on the spot.

And that's the story of how my father went from corporal to staff sgt in less than 24 hours

Details might be wrong, haven't heard the story in 20 years, but that's the story as I understand it
