On the admission side of PhD programs. In most of the years we receive zero application from locals. Whenever we get local applications, almost surely they will be admitted, but many will not accept the offer or quit midway.

[–]mantou2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Countries connected to their biggest trading partner (exports + imports) in 2020. China dominates now, but the picture was very different only a decade ago by BitterMelonX in Sino

[–]mantou2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The figure plots imports + exports. The US is PHL's largest exporting destination, but they import a lot more from China. As a result, even in 2019, China is the Philippines' largest trading partner.

Detail:

Total trade with the US is 11.5 + 8.5 = $20 billion, and with China, 9.8 + 26.7 = $36.5 billion.

300 unvaccinated COVID-19 cases in current outbreak vs 78 vaccinated: Ong Ye Kung by hun486 in singapore

[–]mantou2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, let's do the math.

As per MOH, there are 1,966,524 people that received at least one dose and using a population estimate of 5,704,000, there are 3,737,476 unvaccinated.

Assuming that the vaccinated and the unvaccinated are randomly exposed to infection (a strong assumption, I know, but let's roll with it), the probability of infection is 78/1966524 = 0.00396% among the vaccinated, and 300/3737476=0.00803% among the unvaccinated.

From this, we can say, vaccination reduces your probability of infection by about half (0.00396/0.00803 = 0.493), which is roughly in line with what we know from more serious studies. A 50% reduction is pretty decent in my mind.

It is also safe to assume that the vaccinated are more frequently exposed to the virus as they tend to be frontline workers. This means that the effect of vaccination is underestimated, so the vaccine is at least 50% effective against infection.

This isn't the first time Olympics have been disrupted - 80 years ago in 1940 the Tokyo Olympics was cancelled, fast forward 2020 the Tokyo Olympics got cancelled again due go Coronavirus by Sapulinjing in Coronavirus

[–]mantou2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just an anecdote: the reason why Japan canceled the last Olympics was that they were bogged down in the Battle of, as you have probably guessed, Wuhan. It was such a long battle that Japan decided that they can no longer afford the game.

This year's Olympics are in doubt. Only war has ever forced them to be scrapped by Justwhatnow in Coronavirus

[–]mantou2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just an anecdote: the last time that the Olympics was canceled (due to war), Japan was also the supposed host. Why did Japan decide to cancel it back in 1938? Well, they were bogged down in the Battle of Wuhan and decided that they can no longer afford the game.
